Speaking of GameChat - I find the whole response to this and the memory useage to be quite funny, really. For years people were going on about Nintendo needing a proper integrated game chat, and when we finally get it...people either don't want it or don't care. Maybe it's too little too late (better alternatives exist, e.g. Discord), or maybe the Nintendo community generally just doesn't care too much about voice chat...but yeah, it's funny how things work out.

I'd think that what people wanted was in-game voice chat like you can already get in several third party games for the Switch, some of which don't even require NSO, e.g. Fortnite. That doesn't require the setting aside of 3GB RAM and hogging 2 CPU cores.

The ability to run Discord alongside your game might be nice on a PC that's got plenty of both to spare, and it's not going to impact the game much. There's a lot less of a case for it on a handheld games console that's already going to be a bit weak compared to the competition because they're trying to keep the power draw around the 10W mark.

Nintendo's own games are probably going to have enough headroom for it not to be an issue, but anyone attempting to do a big third-party port probably won't appreciate it that much.

@JaxonH I'd rather get the views of people who have played it to completion.

I've also... never watched a YouTube video review. I'm over 40.

Really?

I’m 41 so don’t feel bad. We all had to learn to adapt at some point.

I would recommend giving YouTube a try and just checking out some different content creators and obviously you’re not going to gel with everyone, but there are good content creators that put out reviews I consider of higher quality than any of the actual gaming publication websites.

For Switch games you can always count on SwitchUp. And I think a lot of people here would vouch for them as well. They truly love Switch, but they are fair and unbiased. If a game has performance problems, they will definitely tell you about it and dock the score as a result. If a game doesn’t have Gyro aiming when it should, they will tell you about it, something a lot of reviewers fail to do nowadays. And they review a lot of games. And personally, I have found their overall scores align reasonably well with my own personal feelings towards those same games. So I’d say maybe check them out and see what you think for some games they’ve reviewed already that you’ve played in the past, just to see how well they align with your taste.

For non-Switch games, I rely on SkillUp. Though he does cover the big Nintendo releases still. This is one of the realist people on the platform and they will tell you exactly how it is. They get into the nuance of games. They’ll tell you how on the one hand a game seems rushed and arguably a cash grab and they feel that’s true, but on the other hand, it’s still an amazing game and the improvements make it worth playing and that’s also true at the same time. They really give it to you straight and don’t boil things down to a simple good/bad dichotomy.

Fighting games and certain other niche genres are harder to find good reliable reviewers for, especially since fighting games evolve over time as they add more fighters and devs re-balance the game. So it’s not uncommon for a fighting game to launch and be critically panned, but then a year later it’s everyone’s favorite game. Right now I think Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 are the two biggest fighters that are arguably worth full price. Because honestly, a lot of fighting games just aren’t. Personally, I’m really only into Street Fighter and as long as I have that, I don’t really feel the need to buy any other fighting games, aside from Smash Bros.

If I may, I can provide links to their channels so you can easily browse their vids. Or when you’re on the YouTube site, just run a search for the game name followed by review followed by the name of the person you want the review from. Like, “Ori and the Blind Forest review SwitchUp” or “Oblivion Remaster review SkillUp”.

And thankfully because a lot of the third party games that are releasing on NSW2 on launch day, most have already released on other platforms so you can simply watch a review for the other versions from someone who has played it to completion, and then just check out a video for the NSW2 version from someone on launch day who gives a quick rundown on performance, because after you watch the review for how good the game is, the only aspect you really need to know about beyond that is how well it performs on switch 2 and whether any unique hardware features are integrated.

SwitchUp Metroid Dread Review

SkillUp Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Review

If you want a review for say, Cyberpunk 2077 or Street Fighter 6, here’s some linked vids. I’m not sure if you’re interested in these particular launch games but if you are, then you could check out these reviews in advance. That way you only need to watch a quick video covering switch performance on launch day. But if these two games aren’t to your taste, you could just look up reviews for whichever games are to your liking. I think the only ones tha aren’t yet released and thus don’t yet have a review are Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma (a game I’m very excited for- but the Switch and PC review codes will go out early so, even then, you could watch a review before launch, then just check NSW2 performance the day the system releases. I suppose there’s also Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut. It’s not a new game, but it does add nearly 30 minutes of new cut scenes and an entirely new English dub with some pretty top rated voice actors, and a new multiplayer RAID mode, so whatever review you watch for that game, I would expect the NSW2 version to only be better. Especially considering it’s running at 4K when the PS4 version only ran at 1080p (there has been some conflicting information on that though as gameplay at preview events was 1080p but Sega themselves confirmed the game would indeed run at 4K).

A major games coverage website is now reporting Switch 2 is going to get a good version of Red Dead Redemption 2. If that doesn't prove Rockstar and Take Two is serious about Switch 2, I don't know what does:

Earlier this year, in the midst of a flurry of Nintendo Switch 2 leaks just before its official reveal video, publications such as Gamereactor heard the inevitable rumours about the first Nintendo and third-party games that would accompany the console. We heard of Cyberpunk 2077, Split Fiction, Final Fantasy VII, and Elden Ring, titles finally confirmed at the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation in April. But there was one big rumoured game that we'd heard of and who yet missed the party: Red Dead Redemption 2.

And it's happened again. Gamereactor has heard from sources close to Rockstar that the acclaimed Wild West open-world opus, considered one of the best video games ever, is not only on its way to Nintendo Switch 2, but could be coming to the new console as soon as later this year. The very same has been heard and is corroborated over at Nintendo, and from different sources.

What's more, RDR2 for Switch 2 wouldn't be coming alone or as a one-off move, but it's possible that it could be coming at the same time, or somewhat later, as an update to the game for current-gen hardware - one of the so-called "next-gen upgrade patch" that brings the graphics and performance of Red Dead Redemption 2 up to date for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Woooo! More fuel for the fire. Come on GTA6 (crosses fingers)

Until someone gets Switch 2 in real life and digs into the hardware this doesn't tell the whole store. Once someone gets it and a teardown and software snooping side then we can all see what's inside of it.

Qwertyninty

@sethfranum Even then we aren’t going to know. The proof is in the games which so far are very impressive and right there along with current gen consoles. I see why Nintendo doesn’t publisher tech numbers like TF and clocks. At the end of the day how does the game look and perform when released?

That's the ultimate end goal. CyberPunk2077 full cart shows off what it can do without having to rely on specs talk. Specs are for Devs/Publisher to fight over.

@JaxonH yeah. But these levels of reviews are going to take playing a lot of the game to do.

And nobody is getting pre-release units. Not content creators. Not journalists. Nobody,

Ultimately, I like some of the critics on VGC and The Guardian. But they won’t be able to tell me.

@JaxonH
That was an incredible writeup about the hypocrisy of these opinions coming out about the Switch 2. You pretty much captured it right there. Just wanted to say that.

I'm 39, so I grew up in the NES to SNES and GameBoy to GameBoy Color era of Nintendo. So, for me, the Switch to Switch 2 progression is actually closer to what I'm used to from my early years, which have formed my gaming preferences.

Jaxon, we still need reviews unfortunately for a lot of the reasons you listed. Yakuza is a good example. Sega said 4k, but the game on show was 1080p. Why would they show it at 1080p if it had 4k? Is the franerate terrible at 4k? Does 4k mode even exist? I don't believe it is genuine native 4k, and I think reviews will bare that out. But if youre going to buy that product off the news it might be 4k, on launch day you'll be in for a rude awakening.

So I hope Nintendo manages to cross their "T"s and dot their "I"s, and we can get some real coverage. 90% of the launch games are graphics updates or ports of games from much more capable systems, and so to be convinced to buy one of these inferior ports i need to know what we are working with. None of these games will just recieve the benefit of doubt that they are good ports, we all know what blind faith will end us up with.

Also.. in other news...

Nintendo started sending out emails to people on the waiting list for the SW2 from their store and...

...although it doesnt spell it out i think this looks like Switch 2 console invites are over at the Nintendo store until at least after launch:

I got the same dreaded email. The emphasis on the fact that invites will continue after June 5th is definitely not super encouraging 😝

I feel like GameChat is hardly ever going to see actual use. It's being touted as the big feature of the Switch 2, but you have to pay extra for it- and it's just worse discord.. with discord being free..

Out of curiosity, has anyone seen any info about how the switch 2 version of split fiction runs. Cause I want to get it on June 5th, but definitely won't if it's 30 fps.

It will be interesting to see how many people use it. The first few months are free right? I can't imagine it will be used much by serious gamers, but perhaps kids too young to have phones who want to play multiplayer with their friends?

@FishyS Kids get their own cellphones pretty early nowadays. I've seen elementary schoolers with cellphones.

I just can't see gamechat succeeding. Especially if it's paid. People will probably check it out for the first few months, but I genuinely feel like the service is going to taper-off. No one used the Wii U chat functions when that was a thing, and given that you need to buy a camera separately to use Gamechat- I just don't think it'll take off like Nintendo is hoping it will.

At least all Switch 2 users will get to try out the astonishing GameChat for free until March of 2026, which is definitely a better thing than letting everyone have Welcome Tour for free. Right...right!?

Locking Gamechat behind a paywall is basically like if Nintendo locked the 3D on the 3DS behind a subscription service.

I never plan on using game chat. Hope it goes away and free up extra ram for games

It’s like Nintendo forgot people got sick of video conferencing a few years ago. Thankfully the camera being a separate accessory means at least that part is completely optional… But I still kind of hate how there’s a physical Chat button there on the joycon waiting for the inevitable accidental press.
