I think we'll see a new Genesis collection announced for PC and consoles later this year which actually runs well this time.

How many times would Sega have done a Genesis/Mega Drive collection now? It seems like it’s one per generation.

I've a feeling that Nintendo are going to milk the attention to make announcements about practically everything else that they're doing before they bring the Switch 2 up again.

My prediction is that the switch 2 will be revealed between January 16th and February 15th. I imagine it's after Donkey Kong because it will completely kill any marketing for that game, but I think it will be before Pokemon day so the Pokemon company can talk about switch 2 products during the presentation. If I have to pick a specific date, I'd say January 30th.

@Sigran102 It's crazy we had the same dates in mind (though I did not factor in Pokemon Day so I had a bit more of February as a possibility)! I still think a January or early February reveal with a mid- to late-February Direct would be most likely.

@Grumblevolcano Surprising that Nintendo is having this Direct on a US Holiday, I thought Nintendo usually avoided that for the most part?

Although it's technically a US federal holiday, a lot of people don't get it off including Nintendo of America. Plus this is a pretty minor direct...

Next direct will be either for a Zelda movie casting announcement, or it will be whatever they could dig up for a February one.

@TheBigBlue A february direct with no switch 2 seems very unlikely considering the deadline to announce it is March. Why put out a switch 1 direct a month before announcing the next console? Everyone will forget about the february announcements.

Will Metroid Prime 2 likely be announced this month?

@Don If it does it will go straight to my backlog, behind Metroid Prime...! lol

@Sigran102 Who says it would be before Switch 2's announcement?

What's stopping them from doing a February Switch 1 only Direct after the Switch 2's reveal?

@CaleBoi25
The first game is definitely worth playing. I finished it recently and had a great time with it.

My thoughts ATM, for what they're worth given how wrong I've been thus far:

  • Mid to Late January reveal, not just a trailer but a full presentation blow out like we saw for Switch
  • February/March Direct to cover some titles outlined in more detail. Explaining how BC will interact with Switch and new NSO features etc. But also some coverage of OG Switch content and "cross gen" upgrades
  • April indies/partner Direct
  • May release

@skywake Personally I don't see a H1 reveal and H1 release, it feels like that's not enough time in between. Also I think Nintendo often avoids May for console releases (which should especially be the case with this huge of demand for Switch 2), although games like TOTK and TTYD have recently released in May so I guess they could consider it this time around.

My guess is

  • March 2025 reveal
  • June/July Nintendo Switch 2 Presentation or Direct
  • H2 2025 release, likely in September/October (leaning on September to maximize amount of games to release for console so people aren't stuck with 'nothing to play' year 1/Holiday season)

I think Switch will still have a decent amount of 1st/2nd party games going in 2025/2026 and possibly a bit into 2027 (ten years after Switch release?!?!), such as random side Kirby games, (I'd love to see that!) and some smaller titles, and spin-offs. We should still be getting some Switch 1 announcements throughout next year, although not sure exactly when. Perhaps just random posts like Xenoblade X? Maybe a February Switch 1 Direct?

Nintendo keeps making sure they're unpredictable. Like they could just go out and say Switch 2 releases 2026 like it's nothing

@Don I hope so. I loved Prime back in the day and absolutely loved the remaster. I didn't like Prime 2 though. If I remember correctly though, I didn't give it much of a chance. I'm sure I'd get on much better with it now. I'm a big fan of 3 though, played through it twice. A remaster of that would be amazing.

Waiting that long for release feels like Nintendo would be shooting themselves in the foot a bit. We know Switch sales have gone down a lot recently and overall profit expectations went down for this fiscal year. Combine that with the fact that even Nintendo's biggest titles this year have had complaints about performance. After that last huge hurrah in 2023, Switch is finally really getting long in the tooth.

As for 'nothing to play' in holiday 2025, the easiest way to deal with that would be to have a huge game in Spring corresponding to release and another huge game (e.g Mario Kart) in Fall.

As with Skywake, most of my predictions recently have been wrong, but regardless of predictions I feel like Nintendo has really dropped the ball if they can't get early 2025 release and multiple huge 2025 titles to start Switch 2 off on a massive wave.

@PikminMarioKirby
I get that pessimism is "winning" the speculation game ATM but I would still argue that the only reason anyone is picking March is because it's the last possible month. There's no particular reason to think it's March other than, well, setting your expectations low. Which is not a particularly good reason to believe it IMO

The reason I think January makes sense is that, like October, it's just before their next investors meeting. Usually a fairly good time for announcements. And I would note that despite this last October not having the Switch 2 reveal some expected it might it did have fairly weighty announcements. Nintendo Music, the NSO PlayTest and an announcement of a port for Xenoblade Chronicles X. Also they did use the investor meeting to announce officially that Switch 2 will be compatible with both Switch software and NSO

From there then the question is when the launch will happen. And while sure, January -> May would usually be pretty short the Switch 2 is also not that complicated a sell. I would also note that with the Switch while we did get a trailer in late October after that they didn't really do much at all until that big January presentation. I could see them echoing this but dropping the, for Switch 2 arguably unnecessary, first trailer

Also... they're already making them... I still can't square that fact with a late 2025 release...

@NinChocolate So it has a... 255% chance of being released? We must be getting two and a half new consoles lol.
