Topic: Next Nintendo Direct?

@Lazz I think we are in a funny time where most parents (at least in US, not sure about other countries) gamed at some point in their lives, but don't necessarily anymore, except casually with their children or even more casually by themselves. Even most people who game to some extent aren't serious enough to follow gaming news or perhaps only follow one or two games.

Obviously the people who inhabit this website are not like that 😆 I always think about this when people are arguing about Wii U or whatever — if I informally survey my workplace most people (depending on age) either owned a Wii when they were young or got one for their kids. And most of them at least know what a Switch is and if they have young kids, their household probably has one. But no matter their age, most of this same group literally didn't know the Wii U existed or else didn't really understand it was seperate from the Wii. This is the difference between a very casual gamer and someone who pays attention to gaming news. That group probably won't notice a console reveal and even if they see it in the news they will glaze over it.

I assumed the adult who still playing video games, keep active getting know about gaming world are probably the peoples who were born during 80's era or 70's era.
I still playing video games in consoles and handhelds, no interest in playing PC and handphone games and I will be 40 years old next month.
I'm glad your kids have interest in video gaming like yours.
I believe kids nowadays could have interest with console / handheld gaming if we the adult introduce them and teach them how to use the machines and introduce the kids with variety of video games from their genre so they might have more interest with different games, not just only stuck by one game only.

@FishyS - You are right about the WiiU. I completely dropped gaming during that time, and had it not been for the Switch, I would likely still be away from it. The system 100% got me back into it, and it's all because of the portability factor.
@Anti-Matter I am really trying to introduce my kids to all different genres. My son has really taken to all things Nintendo, plus Fortnite in the last year, and roguelikes (Hades & Vampire Survivor). Hades is a particular favorite, and at PAX this year, Hades 2 was his highlight. He's done a really great job of mixing up the games, and isn't just tied to one. However, when his one game is TOTK or BOTW, I don't mind .

I’ll be shocked if Nintendo shows anything about Switch 2 this year.

I wonder why a lot of people think the PS5 presentation has some sort of connection to a possible “Switch 2” presentation. I know there is a reasoning for why people think that. I’d have to assume it could be that a PS5 presentation for this week could have Nintendo move the date for a Direct or “Switch 2” presentation to another week to avoid an overlap. I do wonder when the “Switch 2” will actually be announced, I keep saying 2025 but I really do not know from how unpredictable a date is. Lot of rumors and info say it’s going to be this month, but I’ll wait and see.

Most of the internet seems to think you'll be shocked very soon 😆 Probably the week before Tokyo Game Show since Nintendo basically always has a direct or presentation two weeks or less before it.

I mean... I think the main reasoning is if they accidentally had the presentations at at exact same time, both companies would lose out on viewers. More generally, they may want a little gap just so they can get a larger percentage of the gaming news attention instead of having to compete with other headlines.

@FishyS I see, thank you! I had a feeling that was why people see a connection with the two, I maybe could see some Nintendo news coming maybe a few weeks after the PS5 presentation. Have there been times where Nintendo has had a Direct of some sort happen shortly after a PlayStation presentation?

@Pastellioli There was at least one time in recent years they both had directs the same day, although they weren't particularly exciting directs if I recall. Usually they are on different days even if they're the same week. For something like a console announcement (even though the PS5 pro is just a midlife refresh so has less hype) , I would imagine Nintendo might want at least a few days to let the media settle down.

Edit: There was some discussion about it before around here, but if Nintendo really did an announcement for a new console like the day after Sony, I bet the media would paint it as a new console war 😆 Maybe not even the normal game media but something random like the wall street journal.

The console wars are dead to the extent that they ever existed. Other than Nintendo's stuff expect to see far more cross platform games going forward. Honestly the way things are going I wouldn't be surprised if Switch 2 gets the Halo Collection before all is said and done

I don't see Microsoft releasing new hardware. They've already got developers targeting two spec levels with the Series S and X, and adding a third tier would only add to their frustrations.

To be honest, I don't think that Sony truly needed the PS5 Pro either. It's probably just a case of having gone to the trouble of developing it, they might as well put it out there even if it'll only benefit a few high-end gamers wanting to make the most of their 4K@120 TV sets.

Nintendo are due new hardware though, arguably overdue. I'm pretty sure that the only reason they're keeping us waiting is that they want the games line-up for the launch year to be absolutely stellar, in a way that even surpasses what the Switch saw in 2017.

I also don’t think Microsoft would release new hardware immediately or in close proximity with a PS5 Pro or a “Switch 2” that might be revealed late this year or whenever. They said they are planning a new console already, but I don’t think it’d make sense to release it when the Series X and S consoles are nearly 4 years old. I wouldn’t expect it until the consoles are older than 4.

Getting back to the topic, I do think that out of them all, the Switch, in my opinion, is in more of a need of a stronger version, or a new console that is stronger than it. I’m not the person who pays close attention to hardware power or stuff, but the things I’ve heard about the Switch’s performance on some games really tells me that the hardware needs to be replaced with something stronger. They would probably have a presentation or Direct focused exclusively on the “Switch 2” and showcasing games for it, I could see them doing that when the reveal comes.

£699/$699 and without a disc drive is way more expensive than I thought PS5 Pro would be. Granted, I thought they'd do 1TB of storage of which adding an extra 1TB adds on around £100 to the price but still.

Really hope Switch 2 is a reasonable price.

@Novamii How amazingly well the Switch is being supported so late in lifespan is part of the reason I'm more excited for upcoming Switch 1 lineup than Switch 2's possibilities.

PS5 pro is way too expensive. $300 more expensive than the baseline equivilant at launch. No PS5 trade in deal will make up for that. I'll wait to see if there's a price drop in a few years.

I doubt the Switch 2 will be similar. I expect it won't be as powerful as even the base PS5, and Nintendo thrives on being a good entry point, especially for kids. $500 is my guess for Switch 2.

The PS5 Pro is an un-needed upgrade that seems more like a rip-off than anything. 700 dollars and no way to play physical media. Not to mention they couldn't even be bothered to include a stand for the console. A console that cannot stand upright or on it's side on its own and needs that stand to not topple over or wobble around. It amazes me that they genuinely couldn't include a piece of plastic that costs them probably pennies to produce.

@Grumblevolcano yep, the only redeeming factor if there is one, that there’s a sizeable boost in storage in addition to the graphical capabilities. Otherwise, wow… what were they thinking?

I really hope Nintendo doesn’t push the next gen price too far after the success of Switch. Excited for the reveal, but also cautious, they haven’t always been great at price points for new consoles.

@Novamii Apparently the PS5 Pro comes with a stand, but it isn't as robust as the one that came with the base PS5. You basically have to purchase a vertical stand if you want to set the console upright instead of just on it's side.

@Enriesto I feel like Nintendo hopefully won't push for a more expensive price point. After all, Nintendo systems carved out a niche as bein the "affordable" family option for gaming compared to the competitor consoles. PS5 and Xbox Series X are slowly gravitating more towards the enthusiast luxury market.

@VoidofLight Honestly, right now all Nintendo needs to do is say "Switch 2: Only $400" and show it playing a PS5 / XBS game with reasonable performance. (Okay not really but it'd be funny after that mess of a show)

I don't know why Sony decided to pull a "It's Over-We're So Back-It's Over" combo like they're Marvel this month but ok.

@link3710 I mean technically you aren't wrong. All they have to show is a game like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth or Monster Hunter Wilds running competently on Switch 2 with a lower price in order to showcase how silly Sony's pricing is.
