I don’t see a full direct happening in June.
Nintendo simply said they didn’t have anything they wanted to show at E3 so why would that change by Nintendo showing everything in a separate thing instead? It will mostly likely be a partner direct or a mini one to the displeasure of the social media Nintendo fan base I’m sure
They said they aren't going (much like Sony and Microsoft), not that they don't have anything to show.
They're never going to publicly admit they have nothing to show, that's bad PR (if Nintendo says they have nothing to show, then the rest of the industry is going to pounce and show stuff then so they can steal the attention). Their actions imply that they don't, however, due to a lack of anything announced past July aside from a handful of DLC packs. We've known more about their medium/long term plans throughout the entire Switch generation aside from 2020, so that's very telling as far as the state of the Switch's lineup, or lack thereof. Sounds like the well is running dry for the Switch and they have basically nothing to show until they're ready to announce the next gen device. And I'm not sure that announcement is happening in June, so if not we're probably not seeing anything but a Partner Showcase or game specific Directs for TotK and/or Pikmin 4 for the next 6 months.
My 2c, I think for an "April" Direct:
TotK: Obviously lines up but I think they could just do a trailer
Advance Wars: Lines up but, again, I don't know how much more they need to show
Pikmin 4: This one could make sense for an April Direct but... it could also be in a June Direct
Mario Kart 8 Wave 5: Too early to say anything in April, this will prob be around August
Other content they might push out? I mean traditionally the time of the year to release stuff is around August-November. If they're going to pull something out of nowhere like a Wind Waker HD or 2D Zelda I would think it's going to be saved for a bit later. And with the Mario Movie I think it probably makes sense to just let that be the main marketing focus for the next little bit
I expect we'll see a Direct around June. Between now and then? I think if they're going to do stuff it'll be along the lines of what we've got fairly recently. I expect more NSO stuff, maybe some real crowd pleasers for the GB/GBA library. Maybe not Mother 3 or Pokemon tier, they'll save titles like that for a Direct. But Zero Mission? Oracle of Seasons/Ages? Mario Tennis/Golf? Could easily be just quietly released

I watched a Nin10doland video about a rumoured 3d Donkey Kong rumour earlier, I hope it's true!
I wouldn't be surprised if any games like that are held back for Switch 2. If all we got for the rest of the year was Zelda, Pikmin, Metroid Prime 2, Metroid Prime 3 and F-ZERO GX I would be very happy!

So, in other words, there was a time earlier in the Switch's life cycle when we knew less about their future plans than we do now. They have an E ticket game with a confirmed release date. Shortly after it's out, they will likely announce the next one.

Nobody knows anything about when they're making an announcement. Only that skipping E3 and releasing a big direct shortly after their next E ticket game would make sense and be consistent with their past behaviour.

You're missing the nuance here. Yes, there was one other time when we knew less than what we do now. But said time was also a unique circumstance where there was a global pandemic and the whole world was adapting to it, and things returned to (relative) normalcy for the industry and Nintendo in 2021. 2020 is an outlier in terms of that pattern, for all intents and purposes you can pretty much throw it out and say that generally they have some kind of medium or long term project to look forward to. Now they do not, which is highly suspicious. And considering that we know of one game after the big showstopper this year, it's highly doubtful that that is the reason behind the silence.

No it's not. They have never intentionally withheld announcements of new games simply because there's a big game coming soon, we've always at least heard of a few new games coming. At best they've just withheld big news blowouts on what those games actually are. The only consistency we've had as far as skipping E3 is that when they've skipped E3, it's because they weren't ready to announce new games. When they skipped E3 we didn't get a Direct in June, or some other similar time. They just went 6+ months without significant news, at best giving us game specific Directs or Partner Showcases. What them skipping E3 most likely means based on their past behavior is that we're not getting any significant 1st party announcements until at least September. But that also means they basically don't have any 1st party games coming in the Fall at all (if they did, we'd know about them by June), and there's no reason why they shouldn't unless they're gearing up for next gen.
This giant quote thread will never die! Also, why would skipping E3 and then dropping a full direct make any sense? Nintendo would drop big Directs during E3 week and call them something like Nintendo Direct E3 2021 or something like that. They are still a part of E3 week in that regard. But last year they weren’t, so they held a small partner direct outside of E3 week. So I don’t believe a 40 minute direct will exist. Even if they do have more games to reveal for the switch, it will be a late June or Early July Direct Mini like 2020, or another Partner Direct. Mini directs don’t necessarily suck either. The Persona series and Xenoblade Chronicles Switch have been among the games revealed for the switch during these directs. So I don’t think it’s that big of an issue really.
Speak for yourself. I'm not interested in Xenoblade and Persona, so those announcements did nothing for me. I'm also not really super excited for anything confirmed except Metroid Prime 4 (I also might like TotK, but I need to see more of it to decide). I'm waiting on new games to be announced and they're unlikely to be announced in June and the ones I have in mind are probably all next gen projects at this point (specifically, I'm more waiting for games like main series Mario, an actual new Mario Kart game, a 2D Zelda that isn't just a straight Oracles remake, Yoshi, Luigi's Mansion, DK, or maybe something new or surprising).
@Giancarlothomaz PR statement, don't put too much stock into it. The article even admits the Switch could exist alongside its successor, which is a highly likely scenario I think. They want to gradually transition the Switch userbase to next gen over the course of 2-3 years instead of suddenly expecting them to drop the Switch for the next gen device at the drop of a hat. If they do expect the Switch to continue solo for the next 2 or 3 years though, the game library sure isn't showing it and they'll need a blowout of new game announcements by September, especially 1 or 2 AAA heavy hitters to look forward to for the next year. Third parties and less dedicated Nintendo fans are slowly abandoning the Switch for PS5 and XBSX, so they need some big 1st parties to make up for it. As is, it doesn't look like said games are coming and their focus seems to be on a killer, 2017-esque lineup for a stronger next gen console.

An exception is an exception, and you're dealing with N=6. They also don't usually release E ticket games in May (last one was 8 years ago). The fact still remains that Sony and Xbox aren't going to E3 either, and
While I'm firmly in the 2026 or later camp, and it's perfectly reasonable given the sales figures, any article with the word "could" in the headline is total BS. It's the ultimate weasel word.
@IceClimbers Nintendo marketing on Tears of the Kingdom is perfect, all of you, are worrying for too little, Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom dont need a huge marketing campaing to suceed, just Breath of the Wild impact in the franchise will be enough to make the game sales explode, i perfer that Nintendo will go blind on us until the release of the game.
