I've played the original to death, so I'd prefer a reimagining, villages do not need to look the same, hyrule field could have a different layout etc.
I would not even mind if they messed with the dungeons!
Any thing that would make it feel like a somewhat new experience.
But at least 50% would hate that... probably regardless what they do to this game (too much or too little), 50% of all old timers will be disappointed.
And the price... will it be $80 physical?
I'm at least quite excited for the reveal, to see how they decided to approach this ungrateful task.
$100 to be able to rent 30 year old games, pinch me now!
There's a rumor by Shpeshal_Nick regarding the OoT remake. Supposedly they have an "unproven" track record so take this with a grain of salt but here you go:
If this is true, good. This remake needs to be ambitious, the rumor about having a big budget, if true, would be a good indication that this is the case. A cheap upscaling of the original or 3DS version isn't going to cut it here when this is the game's second remake and we already have the original on NSO. Sounds like, if true, this is at bare minimum going to be a Metroid Prime Remastered scale remake.
@rallydefault I really enjoyed the game, until I got to the end and just wanted it to end. So like you, I had zero desire to go back through and try to 100% it. Plus, it felt strange having the arbitrary No Turning Back, override your save file. Now, I made a backup just in case - but I'm pretty sure that I'm done with the game. I can't really pinpoint when or why my thoughts on it changed...when I was done, I was done (and I was anticipating FF7/RE). Now that I've played through RE 7,8,9 - those are games that I'll be replaying.
@Lazz
Yea, I enjoyed my time with it overall, but I’m glad it was on the shorter side. And I had all the crystals I needed and had already scouted the locations of the mech parts, so that stuff didn’t add any hours.
I’m not a Metroid person to begin with, but I’m glad I experienced it. I also got it for “free” when I was trading in a bunch of games I wasn’t playing anymore, so that helps.
@rallydefault I am a pretty big fan of Prime 1, loved the Switch version. I played like you, got the crystals naturally through going from zone to zone. So it wasn’t a big deal at all, I just didn’t want to go hunting post game 😂. Solid 7-8 for me. I just don’t have the time to do any more with it. 1st time through the levels were great. The mines, lightning levels were awesome.
BUT - this is about OOT and I can’t wait. Straight remake or FF7 style remake, I don’t care. This will be a day one purchase. OOT holds a special place for me - it was the first game that truly floored me. Going from NES to SNES Zelda’s to OOT was special. When I booted it up for the first time, I must have watched the intro 3 times before starting it. I’m equally as excited about the music as the gameplay/graphics.
And I’m not concerned about what Nintendo does with it, because their track record with 3D Zelda’s is about perfect.
I'll second that. OOT is one of the first video games I experienced when it was new, and was the most mind blowing I could even imagine a video game to be, especially since nearly all my time gaming until then had been on NES or a handful of "ported to Genesis" era arcade games. Exploring 3D worlds on N64 was regularly the most exciting part of gaming at that time, and OOT was the most exciting version of that in a way that is hard to even properly convey by any modern standards.
So while I can be like "eh other Zeldas are cooler" or "eh I don't need the exact same game again", and I do feel that's true, I can't even pretend to not have a real deep fondness for Ocarina of Time and a real appreciation of it, or any game like it, being given a potential high quality remake in a post-BOTW world.
I also do agree that 3D Zelda is as perfect a track record as video games can have. The worst thing I can say about a 3D Zelda is that I might no longer think Wind Waker on Gamecube is a 9/10 because of the remake's improvements. The lowest point in 3D Zelda history is that an HD remake might've been too good.
@Lazz
Yea, although I'm super old and Ocarina was nowhere near my first Zelda, it's constantly in a fight for my favorite along with Link's Awakening and Link to the Past. It really was something special at the time, and I usually play through it again on my 3DS every few years or so.
I'd like to see them do something different with it and add some stuff.
@rallydefault I haven't replayed the game since it launched, so I'm thinking that this remake will look like how I remember it (those old games always look better in my mind than what they actually looked like). I'm with you, ideally I'd like to see an expansion of ideas/scope...hopefully we'll learn more soon.
Now that I've convinced myself this will be good and interesting and not just "the same game but prettier", my only worry is that instead of ever following this up with a new 3D Zelda even remotely in this style they'll just remake the other 3D Zeldas again. And every 5-6 years we'll just endlessly rotate between Warriors, open world, 2D, 3D remake. :V
And then someday they'll put out a BOTW remake that looks like the quality of Pixar movies now, since BOTW style will have been replaced and 3D Zelda will now be controlled by our minds or something. :VVVV
@kkslider5552000
Yea, my guess is that they are trying to establish multiple paths of development so that they have some sort of Zelda game every year or two. My guess would be:
Mainline 3D, obviously
Spinoffs like the warriors games
Mainline 2D
Remasters
So, mostly new games but with remasters sprinkled in to keep a relatively steady cadence. And most of these paths will use outside dev studios as support or even as the main devs like we saw with Echoes of Wisdom.
I do wonder if there will be voice acting too. I could see them absolutely going either way on that one.
I also wonder if it will be English voice acting that I overall actively like is in the game. TOTK was close, but no cigar. It was certainly better than in BOTW, so hopefully that level of improvement in voice direction continues.
With the Switch 2's graphical capabilities I'd like to see an Ocarina of Time remake with the graphical fidelity of something like God of War on PS4.
Although Nintendo have never been about graphics. Even Metroid Prime 4, which is arguably Nintendo's most technically impressive game to date isn't on the same level as something like Uncharted 4 or Ghost of Tsushima (although it was built for Switch as well, so it's understandable), so I think I'm probably going to be disappointed.
