Absolutely wonderful. I think it's the right move at the right time. We've had a decade of open world Zelda, so revisiting the more linear, cinematic structure is a welcome change of pace. Then there's the current trend of large scale re-imaginings (Final Fantasy VII), this kind of project is "a thing" and people appreciate it. Technology has advanced enough to make a big difference when you attempt a remake. And generally speaking OoT (and Zelda as a franchise) is just such a strong asset, it's about time they bring it to a new audience. It's comparable to Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, both of which they're currently turning into TV shows.
Not saying I want a Zelda TV show ewww! Just making the point that OoT has been laying dormant for what a treasure it is.
If they are going for a remake, I'd prefer a remake of the first and second games using the Link's Awakening NSW engine.
If you really want to play OoT, it's in the NSO N64 app.
And just to get ahead of myself: In case of a big success Nintendo would be silly not to follow it up with Majora's Mask 🥹
Now this I would be more excited about than OoT. With its temporal loop mechanics and focus on sidequests, IMO Majora's Mask was much more innovative and more ahead of its time than its predecessor... So if they'd just add some quality of life enhancements and made some of the sidequests less vague, they could remake MM into a game that'd still feel fresh today.
@Polvasti I'm with you in that Majora is possibly my all time favourite Zelda game, but when I eventually revisited Ocarina some 15 years ago I had to admit it is almost as good. It is more accessible though, so starting with the big hit Ocarina is the right choice imo, and once they've got their new engine in place chances are good they won't waste the opportunity for a Majora remake (just like they reused the OoT basis back then when the two games were made).
You said you'd be happy with just some "quality of life enhancements", but honestly, to justify a re-release of games this old (and technologically ancient) in 2026 you have to do more. I'm absolutely thrilled about the prospect! Best gaming news in years if true.

It's cool if you would prefer remakes of the first two games over OoT, but your second point of "just play OoT on the NSO N64 app" is fairly redundant considering Zelda 1 & 2 are both playable on NSO's cheaper tier (whereas OoT requires the Expansion Pack to be played).

Fair point. But OoT is way more "modern" than the NES titles. You could relaunch OoT with modern graphics and a couple of QoL changes and it would not look obsolete.
You just need to analyze all 3D Zeldas up until BotW, and you can see that, mechanically, they follow the OoT template to a T, adding one/two extra mechanics / gimmicks (the sea in WW, the wolf-dark/hylian-light duality in TP etc. etc.)..
It's Nintendo - if they do a "remake" it'll be very faithful to the original and half of the internet will complain how it's a waste of time because it just looks a bit better (it will look a lot better but memory plays tricks on people). Source: every single Nintendo "remake" ever.
There will also be a tiny but incredibly loud group complaining about censorship because the Great Fairy is wearing clothes or the BGM isn't offensive to one third of the planet or something. Source: this thread?
Realistically I think that OoT is such a famous name in the medium that it makes sense to revisit it. The game isn't actually as good as its reputation (IMO) but it's a huge name to take advantage of. I'm not sure anything they can do to it will satisfy fans because I think the underlying game and plot just aren't as interesting to an adults eyes as they might have seemed to a teenager.
They could add complexity but turning Hyrule Field into "BoTW lite" would probably just detract from the simplicity of the game and satisfy no-one. Source: Twilight Princess.
Oh well. I'd trust Nintendo to make a good game and to understand what we actually want (rather than what the community vocally says it wants) so if it's true then it's something to look forwards to.

Unfortunately you're probably right about this because almost every Nintendo remake falls into this category. The only exceptions have really been Pokemon (which has trended away from that and towards Legends games which are more spiritual successors) and 2D Metroid (massive disappointment that Prime Remastered didn't follow the same MO as Zero Mission and Samus Returns, it had enough issues to justify a similar expansion), everything else has been a copy/paste job.
That being said, will it really look a lot better? Maybe better than the original with its jaggy polygons (low poly count is really the big issue that makes N64 graphics age poorly), but the more interesting question is how much better will it look than the 3DS version? I'm doubtful it would look much better than the 3DS version (speaking of, that's the other big issue, will they just pull a DKCR and just make it largely a remaster of the 3DS remake), pretty much any kind of graphical comparison past 6th gen requires a full comparison video zooming in on individual pixels and even then, it's still often barely noticeable (really it's practically a full blown "corporate would like you to find the difference" meme). It's not a "memory" issue, even when the comparison is shoved in your face it's a game of spot the difference.

I really don't get this, I had no real issue with TP and don't know what this game actually proves here. More content is generally always good, especially optional content. And again, pairing with an improved fast travel system would also help keep the meat of the game rather simple and straightforward to the point where it's easy to ignore if you don't like it.

Thing is though this is a trend that Nintendo has pretty much avoided like the plague, I would love to see an actual first party game in this caliber. Nintendo is pretty much the opposite, almost all of their remakes are copy/paste graphics bump and little to nothing else (maybe a few QoL improvements at best, but usually that's it and there's no changes to the gameplay, map design, content, or story to modernize the experience).
I'm gonna second the argument that complaining about Twilight Princess compared to OOT's overworld, is at best, the Spiderman pointing at each other meme. I've never understood the complaint at all, and now that I've played Metroid Prime 4, I never will. Neither game has anything remotely as bad as the green crystals, and considering the big poe quest exist, that's saying a lot.
@kkslider5552000
In my opinion having freshly played through Prime 4, the green crystals quest is not nearly as bad as the internet cracks it up to be. You're told about it at the very beginning of the game, and it's beyond easy to just nab them as you naturally go from point to point on the map.
The mech parts were way more annoying for me.
Anyway, yea, games that came out before the true advent of social media are largely spared these ridiculous criticisms.

This is not remotely true in this specific scenario. Navi was widely considered the most annoying character for some reason for at least a decade, to the point that "hey, listen" is still a meme that I saw referenced on an official sign at PAX East just this past week.
Let me also make it clear again that in my 30 years of playing games that after being fairly optimistic about Metroid Prime 4, that the two hours I spent primarily focused on the entire other 50% of green crystals I had missed out on before late game, in Metroid Prime 4, is one of the most miserable, empty, pointless and soul sucking experiences I've had in a video game.
@Grumblevolcano That's a really good point re: Nintendo tying the hype to the movie to a remake and now I think about just seeing the stills points heavily in that direction.

Er, how about the most recent Zelda remake, i.e. Link's Awakening? That one was hardly a copy/paste job, since (besides re-doing the soundtrack with a proper orchestra with epic results) they came up with a completely new, unique and charming visual style which everyone loved so much that they made another, wholly new game with the same graphics.
Then there's the current trend of large scale re-imaginings (Final Fantasy VII), this kind of project is "a thing" and people appreciate it.

I'd want to differentiate a bit: What you describe are "remasters" like Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD. Those are largely the same save for a resolution and general graphics bump. Same for Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D. Originals and target platforms were either technologically close (GC/Wii -> Wii U) or it was a conversion from a console to a low power tiny screen handheld (N64 -> 3DS).
This case is quite different: The originals are so ancient (28 and 26 years!) and low-res compared to the target platform that Nintendo simply cannot get away with just polishing the graphics output. So while I'm not necessarily expecting a FF7 style complete reimagining with just the story intact (not ruling it out either) I'm fairly certain they'll at least create every model and scene from the ground up.
@kkslider5552000
I'm saying that that's entirely your fault if you didn't have the 50% green crystals by the time you finished the mines. You almost have to try to avoid them to be in that situation after 10ish hours in the game.
And no, sorry - Navi didn't become the meme she is now until social media became a thing. I was there. That's exactly what I was saying. That sort of thing literally couldn't even happen until social media became widespread.
It was the advent of social media that led to this groupthink nonsense. Before that it was just your friends and gaming magazines - people just played games and came to their own conclusions

I did have them, I didn't have the other 50%. That's what "other" means, as in like "other" half.
i wanted to 100% a Metroid game, an idea that (barring maybe whatever I missed out when I decided I wasn't gonna play more Federation Force as soon as I beat it once) was never bad until December 2025 and would still not have been bad had it not been for that.
Also, I saw infinitely more Navi hate in 2000s era internet forums, I have no idea what you're on about. I'm the first person to hate on hyperbolic social media era groupthink, but that existed long before social media and Navi is internet forum era discussion and jokes if anything ever was. By the time social media was the norm you had Fi anyway, so that specific backlash was at the very least halved by having competition. :V
And its not just like nerds, Navi was made fun of in Powerpuff Girls, in the 90s. That's probably as mainstream as non-Mario non-Pokemon Nintendo could ever possibly be at that time, the most notable OOT reference in pop culture was used to say Navi sucked.
@kkslider5552000
You don’t consider forums social media? That’s… novel lol
No kidding on the 50% thing, thank you! Never knew. Truly a James Bond moment there, Q.
My point was that your complaint, like so much of this stupid groupthink hate campaign against Prime 4, is dumb because nobody was forcing you to get the other 50%.
So here we are yet again: the green crystals you need to complete the story are harmless at worst and far from a reasonable reason to hate Prime 4’s overworld.

Look, most games are bad to 100% at some point, Metroid was the exception, doing 100% runs is a major part of the appeal of Metroid as a franchise.
Furthermore, I don't care about literally anyone else's opinion. Most games, it would not be an issue, in this game it primarily took away a lot of my optimism and general enjoyment of the game and now I'm not sure if I even want to replay it. Maybe someday I won't care anymore, but until that day comes, it did the most work out of anything in making Metroid Prime 4 one of the more disappointing games I've played. The only other game that just made me feel sad and disappointed in the same way was Paper Mario Sticker Star, which despite being an obviously worse game, at least its worst parts were more spread out.
Also tbh. Prime 4's overworld obviously wasn't good in the first place, both in terms of execution and the very idea. Open world anything is arguably the fundamental opposite to most of what makes Metroid good, so it would've had to have been a great one for me to want it here and it sure did not succeed. The green crystals just took it from being pointless and dumb to actively miserable, because there was not much positive of note from that part of the game to counter it.
If every single person except me liked it, I would still feel this way.
I'm also really undecided if it was just that that part was that bad or if it just crushed all the optimism that was making me overlooked the game's flaws. I have no idea, because for 2/3 of my time with the game this was a flawed but very appreciated return to form and then that happened and despite a great final boss at the end of it all, my experience was just not the same by this point.
