Maybe it can actually run well now lol

I am fully on board with this as long as they don't advertise it as "The true story" again only for it to turn into an alternative "What if?" scenario halfway through like with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. This is a piece of BotW/TotK Hyrule's history I've always wanted more details about.

I’m all aboard for this one. I have adored the Hyrule Warriors games but AoC was my JAM! So I am very, very excited to play this and learn more about ancient Hyrule. This almost made me go “F it, getting the system day one” instead of waiting. Probably gonna buy the game at launch just to feel included lmao.

It's funny because I've been replaying Age of Calamity for a week or so already. I'll be good by the time this comes out, though lol

@Tyranexx I'd think that it's inevitably going to be a non-canon spinoff game because there isn't really a consistent canon between the mainline Zelda games in the first place. When TotK flat out reinvents much of what happened in BotW, there's not really that much hope for externally developed prequels not to tread their own paths too.

Anyway, I'm sure it'll be a fine game. I'm just a bit burned out on Musou spinoffs of late to be wanting to pick it up this year.

Thrilled to see this. Only yesterday did I post about finishing Age of Calamity and how much I loved it / how much untapped potential there is in Warriors crossovers.

That said, I do wonder how this can beat out Age of Calamity. Unless they pull some story shenanigans, the character selection can't be as good as AoC, can it?

At least 2'8".

Ryu_Niiyama

@Buizel 5 ancient sages, Rauru, Sonia, Zelda. They can probably get away with an ancestor to Impa, and some zonai type guardian. Then you have Dorf and Phantom Dorf. And then I am sure there will be game specific characters.

@Matt_Barber That's a good point about canonicity; I don't think I'll ever not be annoyed that they retconned some of BotW out of TotK. Mostly where the Sheikah tech and Divine Beasts were involved. The most they gave us was an out of game explanation that frankly felt lukewarm. Yet they had some characters and areas clearly grow and change between the games. This wouldn't have bothered me if the games were intentionally unrelated, but TotK is a direct sequel. I don't lose sleep over it - there are way more important things in life - but as a huge Zelda fan and a lover of cohesive lore in game series as a whole, I find it bothersome.

I think it'll be a great game. I just hope they're upfront about what the plot is and is not this time around.

@Ryu_Niiyama Good point. Still, would be weird to not have Link as a playable character. Even Echoes of Wisdom (kinda) offered us the Link experience!

100% they'll play around with time and have Link (and the modern sages) travel into the distant past. The story will start as a promising side story to TOTK and end up as a convoluted mess that contradicts TOTK entirely for the sole reason of introducing half a dozen or more "popular" characters. It's just their MusMO.

Of course it'd also be possible for there to be parallel stories - one in the past and one in the present. That way you'd be able to have Link and other "present timeline" characters playable.

Anyway I'll likely be daft enough to buy it either way but I think I might have had my fill of actually playing these games (and I've only ever really played AoC and I dropped it as soon as I'd finished the main storyline - no 100% for me).

I'm just hoping link is playable. Otherwise, I'm just not sure.

Zelda showed that she could step up to be the main character for Echoes of Wisdom, so I'm sure she could handle a spinoff.

Like that game, I'd still be expecting more than a cameo from Link though.

@Matt_Barber I'm good with zelda being a main character, but I definitely need to play as link most of the time. I did have fun with echoes, but that's a different style game.

@Buizel I am sure they will toss him in somehow but honestly this is Zelda’s War and journey to become this iteration of Hylia. (I still stand by the belief that the dragons are stand-ins/versions for the goddesses. But in a more primal fashion.) so it doesn’t need him. Although I need someone to explain wtf the Master Sword came from now. It can’t just be a paradox.

@Ryu_Niiyama it wasn’t in game. At the onset of the game Link holds the master sword. At the same time the master sword from the future is… where it is in the sky. It’s the same sword.

It’s like the Star Trek episode where Data’s head is dug up from the Wild West. Or Chrono Trigger where Robo spends hundreds of years farming.

@StuTwo I understand the paradox. But the sword had to be forged somehow. If the sword had been completely destroyed one could argue that Hylia (name I use for her divine state) forged it but from memory of the existing one in the future. But it wasn’t so somebody had to make it. You could point to skyward sword but I feel TOTK upended that. (Granted I have not beaten TOTK so maybe I am missing something.)

I caved. Having fun, mostly...

What the hell is the difficulty spike in the second mission for chapter 2 🥲

Booted it up on my lunch break. Obviously take everything with a grain of salt cause I won't get a chance to put any significant time into this until the weekend, but the first impression is strong. Not a graphical powerhouse by any means, but its in the spirit of TOTK. Maybe it is just frontloaded, but right now, this feels like the most story heavy musou game I've ever played. Musou games are far more my speed than what the traditional Zelda experience is (or even the modern open world version) and the first taste of combat is excellent, with more depth and strategy than your average Warriors title. I dunno in a live battle though how frustrating it is going to be constantly swapping between people to make sure you have the right counters, but right now, every battle has felt like an epic, scripted battle straight out of an anime, but you are in full control.

Life to the living, death to the dead.
