Nintendo UK has confirmed a list of Switch games which will receive graphic and performance enhancements for free.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowsers Fury (also getting local and online GameShare)
Super Mario Odyssey (also getting local and online GameShare)
The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening
The Legend of Zelda Echo's of Wisdom
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker (also getting local and online GameShare)
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
Game Builder Garage
51 Worldwide games (Clubhouse Games) (also getting local and online GameShare)
Arms
Big Brain Academy (also getting local and online GameShare)
Pokemon Violet and Scarlet

I cannot tell you what the potential will be for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet! If Nintendo and the Pokemon company can actually fix this games performance and bring it up to a decent quality, with some proper marketing this game could sell million of more units.

And I think this is the sleeping giant for Nintendo Switch 2 - first party games coming to life with new frame rates and resolution that will make those game feel like a new game! I think this is going to be as big as the "enhanced versions" with additional content.

What about 3rd party ones? I'm sure various developers will announce updates similar to what Nintendo is doing. I excpect SEGA will do the same for Sonic SuperStars and maybe Sonic Frontiers as well.

It's a nicety. Cool that Nintendo are doing it. But it's kind of...whatever. I suppose I should be glad Nintendo aren't charging for these performance patches.

I expect that not a single third party partner will do this for their games.

The new SoC and the use of an SSD for digital games will smooth over a lot of rough Switch ports.

@SwitchplayerJohn I cant wait to play through Links Awakening again without the stutter and hopefully, an option to remove the blur effect. I'll be happy with a solid 60fps but I wonder if they can get it up to 120. And New Donk City is going to look so good with some proper anti-aliasing. All those flickering windows slightly spoiled that stage for me. Hopefully they get round to enhancing Luigi's Mansion 3 too.

You're right, Switch 1 games will likely continue to sell very well throughout the Switch 2's life. I never got around to buying Mario Wonder and have no desire to buy any more Switch games currently but if that gets a 120fps update on Switch 2, I'd have no problems paying full price for it. It wont feel like I'm buying a last gen game. And there will be Switch 2 owners who never had the Switch.

There is a list for free and paid updates so far. We will see later on how Switch 1 games will update from their publishers.

Regarding unpatched games, I'm not sure if they will run automatically better on Switch because that's not always the case, some consoles use the extra power, some do optionally and others don't. I don't think Nintendo has said anything about this.

@SwitchplayerJohn Very useful thread.

They have actually, under their "Ask the Developer" series of articles after the Switch 2 Direct.

There are some games that ran well due to the Switch console's hardware configuration. Switch 2, on the other hand, has increased processing capabilities and an expanded memory capacity, which could theoretically cause some of those games to stop working. We weren't so confident at first, but as we tested games one by one, we found out that some issues could be solved by making improvements. This process helped us build confidence that, while we might not be able to solve everything, we can work it out for many games.

When we tried running Switch games on Switch 2, there were some where loading times became faster, or game performance became more stable, so we realised that the overall gameplay experience could improve. And as mentioned previously, GameChat will also be available for Switch games that are played on Switch 2. Even for previously released games, there are opportunities to add value in the sense that it can enhance and change the gameplay experience. We understand that people buy new hardware so they can play new games created for it, so we've developed Switch 2 with that in mind. However, it's safe to say that Switch 2 is a console with new strengths in the sense that it adds value to Switch games that players already own. We'll take advantage of those strengths in the future to further enhance the gameplay experience of Switch games. We believe there are many things we can do, such as making Switch games compatible with GameShare through free updates, as well as leveraging the processing power of Switch 2 to enable games to run in higher resolution and with a smoother frame rate.

Their statements in the article are consistent with the user experience of running Switch 1 games in unofficial emulators such as Yuzu or Ryujinx. Their implementation too grants additional processing power to the system and games being emulated, and will achieve greater performance and stability if the real hardware being used is powerful enough.
This won't suddenly make a game capped at 30 FPS run at 60 FPS however, that part still requires an update from the developer.
For games that struggle to maintain their target frame rate on the other hand, theoretically on Switch 2 they should be able to comfortably maintain peak performance. Titles like Bayonetta 3 and Bakeru target 60 FPS but aren't able to maintain it easily, and should serve as examples of how Switch 1 games without dedicated updates can perform better on Switch 2.

@RupeeClock It's not as specific, but the last sentence of the quotation is what I want to see being a real thing. There will be lots of videos testing unpatched games when the console is out.

@Banjo-
Theoretically, it should be trivial to instruct Switch 1 games to run at an increased resolution. This is something that emulators can readily do, and is already what Nintendo does in select releases of retro games like Super Mario 3D All-Stars, or upcoming Nintendo Switch Online GameCube games (which have been confirmed to be upscaled from 480p to 900p).
For the supported 1440p and 2160p video modes when docked, you could instruct the game to run at 2x720p or 2x1080p and in many cases get improved visuals.
However, for games that run at sub-native resolutions, this can actually make games look unexpectedly worse.
Tears of the Kingdom runs at an internal resolution of 900p and uses AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution to make it look more like proper 1080p, and this implementation goes wrong when upscaling in emulation.

@RupeeClock I know, but you know that with Nintendo you never know (LOL), so we have to wait and see if it has any boost mode or do not like the other Nintendo consoles.

I'm almost certain Hello Games will release a free Switch 2 upgrade for No Man's Sky. One of the biggest selling point of NMS is that they're constantly improving it and adding new content, and all the updates are free for anyone who has the base game. They've already improved the Switch 1 version of the game significantly in the 2,5 years since it came out; things like building a customised version of FSR 2 upscaling specifically for the Switch port, which made it look much better. So with that history, I'd be surprised if the owners of the Switch 1 version wouldn't get a free upgrade for Switch 2.

Xenoblade 2 and 3 Definitely need an update. These games are masterpieces and deserve a second walkthrough and fresh approach. Hope Nintendo will not lose the chance

@Flugen What sort of update do you think Xenoblade 3 needs? IMO it's fine as it is.
