To me, this gen feels like Nintendo's giving up again, and after the runaway success of the Switch 1, I can't help but feel like it's just gonna be another Wii U all over again. I've also seen a forum post about the full system freezing, which is also worrying, as the only time I've had that (the Wii U) freeze up on me is when I was trying to do the elytra gliding part of the tutorial, but that was thankfully patched out.
Yeah, no. The Wii U was a failure due to its confusing name, bad marketing, so-so controller, and a lack of quality software outside of Nintendo's offerings. Anyone with eyes can tell that the SW2 isn't going down that route at all.
"Now I have an obligation to tag along and clear the area if Luigi so much as glances at a stiletto."
I got the Wii U (Premium Nintendo land bundle) about two or three months into its life cycle and only really because a shop had a big sale when going into administration and the machine was £100 less than it should have been at the time with Zombi U thrown in free on top... no one I knew had a Wii U or cared about the Wii U, no one in my daily life talked about it.... I got the Switch 2 day of release pre-ordered, I know lots of other people who had it preorderd as well and everyone at my work including much older and younger people than me are talking about it and aware of it even if not getting it
It's selling extremely well for one, so there's that. You're also forgetting that the Switch 1 had several issues at it's launch that most people didn't even run into. It's bound to happen every single time new hardware releases.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
I got the wii u close to launch and realised it was a very weak console and moaned about it but to be honest there were some fantastic games that I really enjoyed but multi-platform games were often horrible on wii u. I was disappointed that the hardware was so weak but enjoyed the Nintendo games. I didn't buy a Switch as when it launched it just seemed to be mainly wii u ports except for Mario Odyssey or other games I wasn't so interested in. I was playing Gamecube, wii and wii u games on it and it seemed great so I got over the weak hardware and seemed to busy on my wii u to get a Switch.
We won't know how the Switch 2 fairs until a few months after launch. Both the wii u and Dreamcast had great launches but it fizzled out after a while. I've seen some reports that the US has loads of unsold Switch 2s at least in some areas and the US is Nintendo's most important market in its sales. However you can't really use that to judge success as Nintendo may have provided a huge amount of stock for launch. A couple of months from now we will see if the Switch 2 is gaining momentum in sales or losing it.
I certainly don't think it can maintain huge sales with current pricing of the hardware and software but I've been wrong before and could be again. I personally don't see it repeating the success of the original Switch. I could see the original Switch still outselling it which has happened in the past but that is typically when a older console is reduced in price when a new one comes out and they find greater success for the older console in poorer markets like South America and Asia etc. I'm not totally convinced Nintendo will more aggressively price the original Switch, I think Nintendo's predictions are the Switch 1 will sell about 5 million in the launch year of the Switch 2 but predict 3x as much for Switch 2. Real disposable income is reducing around the world in most countries so a high price console with high price games seems likely to get some resistance compared to the original Switch which was better value hardware and software.
I've watched a few videos of Switch 2 vs Switch 1 for a lot of games and can clearly see the difference in the games but I don't actually care that much about the difference. People are already playing Switch 1 games using emulation at 4k 60fps with improved detail etc. Most people are looking for new game experiences on Switch 2 not slightly crisper Switch 1 games. I think so much attention on Switch 1 games is detrimental to the Switch 2.
Also the Mariko Switches like the Switch Lite and OLED models etc have better battery life so are more practical portable consoles especially as they are a bit smaller. I don't want to play Switch 1 games on a console with only 90 minutes battery runtime. I'd rather have 6-9 hours.
Ultimately though if the Switch 2 succeeds it will hold its price but if it fails to sell as well Nintendo will reduce its margin and sell for less so more people get onboard and the user base is larger. Yes Nintendo won't make as much per console but will sell more games. Really its a win, win for Nintendo unless of course they reduce the price and it doesn't sell more then obviously its a bad generation for Nintendo but I can't see that happening to be honest. I don't think the spec of the console merits the current pricing for the console, hardware or the games for me personally at this time. However when there are 4 or 5 exclusives I really want that aren't available on stronger platforms elsewhere with much cheaper software prices then I will probably jump aboard.
There's a lot of scaremongering going on right now as well as people who are looking for any excuse to throw Nintendo/Switch 2/Individuals who own a Switch 2 under the bus.
Saw a post just now announcing something like "joy-con 2 drift is affecting a large number of players" ...what?!!
What kind of unspeakable acts are people putting their joy-cons through to get them to drift 3 days in?!
And in the slight chance they are drifting out of the box, you can send them for a free repair.
This is just one example of things being overblown by the internet and the same applies to the idea that it's gonna be another Wii U situation which is borderline impossible if the initial sales numbers are anything to go by
@Nintoz bet you anything they are playing Mario Kart World and didn't take the "Smart Steering" thing off lmao
Yup, just people hating and scaremongering. I own a Switch 2 and absolutely LOVE the system so far. Feels like a very powerful, premium feeling Switch. Got Mario Kart World and Cyberpunk 2077, and both are impressive and fun to play.
I find it's usually best not to listen to the haters on the internet, because there seems to be WAY too many of them out there lately, and it's getting very annoying. Just very sad, haters that want a rise out of you.
Every console iteration Sony and Microsoft do the same thing and simply upgrade power and no one complains. Switch 2 has been out for less than 5 days and ppl are comparing it to the Wii U. It’s almost inexplicable to even be comparing the 2 systems at this point, let alone just because 1 person posted about a system freeze up. Theres way too much unnecessary panic and Nintendoooooom surrounding Switch 2.
@hYdeks Speaking of "scarmongering" I was on youtube and saw a video being recomended to me with the title "Backlash has fans returning Switch 2's in droves" and I looked at that title for 2 seconds before thinking to myself "Yeah? Then why has no one but you reported on this massive backlash? I would think this would be all over youtube and sites like NintendoLife if there was something that big happening".
I mean seriously. I'm not a blind loyalist and will call out Nintendo when they mess up. Like how "Welcome tour" should have been an add in. Either for free for all, or free for those with online subscriptions. Having the expansion gets you two Zelda upgrades so why not put your demo with the standard subsription? Charging for it was dumb. Also they probably should have just eaten the cost and sold Mario Kart World for $70 because even if $80 is inevitable ... they probably shouldn't have given people reason to use them as a scape goat for it. They could have made the lost money back with DLC later anyway. I know we all hate that tactic but ... hey it works.
BUt anyway point is. Youtube is FLOODED with people just ... acting like Nintendo is the agent of saten even though even the most critical view of the Switch 2 launch would have me say Nintendo lost touch with it's casual market a little and needs to be careful to not forget it's core audience.
Meanwhile Xbox is selling it's consoles for just as much if not more and selling Doom Dark ages for $80 and no one cares.
It moved 3mill units in the first day. For comparison the Wii U was struggling to hit 2 million in the first two months. At the rate it's going it'll probably outsell Wii U lifetime sales in the first few months. So maybe find a new line
Also anyone who says this is like the Wii U in terms of software, stability, performance or anything else either doesn't remember the Wii U or isn't thinking before they talk
The launch Wii U was a VERY slow UI with few games to play and Wii backwards compatibility that was a step backwards from playing on Wii hardware. Ignoring the digital video signal improving things. While with Switch 2 it's significantly faster than the Switch UI and has a killer app on day 1 and backwards compatibility brings significant improvements to an ever growing list of titles. Really, the only backwards steps are screen and battery life but even these only really hold as backwards steps if you're comparison is with the OLED model
I'd be very surprised if the Switch 2 doesn't pass the Wii U in lifetime sales in its first year. Nintendo are projecting 15 million units sold, and several analysts have said that they think that that's a conservative estimate.
Passing the Switch 1 might present a sterner test, that we can't be sure that it's on track for until several years have passed, but it's certainly off to a good start.
@Metazoxan ugh. I am so bored of seeing videos pop up on my recommendations on Youtube with scaremongering click baiting negative nonsense. 'Nintendo has really f***** up. Here's why' 'Switch 2 is the worst launch EVER' 'Switch 2 in trouble' etc etc. I keep clicking 'Not interested' or 'don't recommend this channel' but there are so many like it.
@Mana_Knight out of curiosity I clicked on one to peak at the comment section ... Holy crap you'd think Nintendo had killed their dog, cooked it, made them eat it, and then burned their house down with how much absolute vitrol they have towards Nintendo. Just a bunch of "Anyone that buys this is an idiot" "The Nintendo of my childhood is dead" and such.
Again I'm all for calling out Nintendo mistakes but ... How the hell is ANYTHING Nintendo's ever done warrant that kind of response?
@Eel What pathetic loser is that? Either he has no backbone and will bow and beg over the slightest pressure ... or he's so desperate to stand out he'll do the most absurd stunts specifically so people will watch his content.
