Hi everyone!
So I sent my Switch 2 for repair to Nintendo ('s repair shop) and just got it back. Everything is fine now. The problem got fixed. Though, now there's a small other problem now.
Every time I start the console an error pop up appears, that the console is in 'repair mode' and I need to contact customer support. If I close that pop up it seems like the console works just fine. It's just a little annoying and not console breaking I think.
Can't find anything online. Only videos or websides that explain recovery mode.
Just to be clear here. It says 'repair mode'.
Help would be much appreciated!
Thanks! β€οΈ
(Btw. I contacted support, but that can take quite some time. And they're closed Saturday and Sunday,.. so)
@Budda While you wait for big N, if you have a reddit, I would ask in the Daily Question Thread pinned to the top of the r/NintendoSwitch sub reddit.(unless someone else knows a better place) Ask today if you can. I think some of the best users there are most active Monday through Friday.
Yeah, I almost never see repair mode discussed. So that may be pretty niche, and why you can't find much about it.
@WoomyNNYes
Thanks for the reply. π
I got a reply from support. (That was pretty fast lol) I have to send it in... again. sight
Well. I hope they get it fixed this time arround because... It has a new problem...
Error Code: 2216-0149
Which I can only find one Reddit post, with zero replies, posted 3 month ago. And Nintendo's webside doesn't even list this error code. At least I can't find it.
Btw. I asked support how they fixed my (prior) problem. They say they updated my console's Firmware and got fixed it that way. ...
... Seriously? The console was on the latest firmware. Are they kidding me? I'm not stupid. π
@WoomyNNYes
You'll get an update for sure!
Funny, the repair shop responsible isn't too far away where I live. Like maybe 45~60 minutes with car. Almost unnecessary to ship this. π
It's there the next day obviously. The long part is, that my console sits in their storage like over a week before they take a look at it.
Joke: Maybe I'll drive there myself and be like a really annoying customer, and ask what bs quality controll this is!!!

If the firmware wasn't correctly installed previously maybe there is an issue with the flash memory so they had to reinstall the firmware. I've seen devices where the so called repair mode that suddenly appears is basically the device has found the flash storage corrupted or faulty so is trying to repair it. It feels like the flash memory on your Switch 2 is not working 100% to me. It caused a bad firmware update and is causing the console to go into repair mode trying to repair bad sectors on the flash memory but that is my guess. Android allows flash storage to be used as virtual memory to extend the memory of the device and that can often cause accelerated failure of the flash storage as the flash storage only has so many write cycles. That isn't related to the Switch 2 but shows how flash memory is not that robust. Also Switch 2 built in flash memory is very decent high speed technology which tends to have a higher failure rate than cheaper slower flash memory. Anyway my guess is problematic failing flash memory. Their fix of reflashing the firmware may not have sorted the underlying problem with the flash memory.
Also most Switch 2's out there are early production which tend to have higher failure rates. If possible I would insist on a replacement unit stating your unit is problematic and hasn't been successfully repaired by Nintendo.
Well. If that's the case, it got faulty during their repair process. And they should be more specific about what they did. I mean, the next person repairing this console has just a vague protocol now. And the support was quoting what they wrote.
About a replacement. Here in Germany, warranty law says that the company has 3 chances to repair a faulty unit. After that, it's my right to get a completely new replacement. It would be goodwill if they do it now already.

I wish that in my country it worked that way. What you say is great because otherwise you can get stuck with a product that doesn't work well for who knows what reason.
About the "repair mode", having absolutely no idea about the console's technicalities, it seems like they put it in a special mode while they repaired it (with more permissions or whatever) and they forgot to put it back in the "normal mode" when they finished the repair.
@supermarido
About your idea of the meaning of the repair mode, that's what I thought/think. That would mean it's nothing severe.
Though, what Bonzo said makes sence as well.
I think I have to contact support again when the console is back, to get info what the repair shop did. Unfortunately they don't state anything when sending it back. Just the console and a Switch 2 booklet (ad) in the package. π
First. I feel stupid. I didn't see that I got a PDF from them with all details about the repair in an email. The first repair says that no error was found and that they just updated the firmware. (Like I previously stated)
There was a notice that (no error was found) and I should check my setup...
Anyway...
Before I sent the console back the 2nd time, I made a factory reset, to see if that would resolve the error message. It didn't(obviously). But I didn't delete save data. I used the reset in recovery mode to make a reset without deleting save data.
Now I got it back again. And wouldn't you know it, my console is now back to the state before I sent it in the first time. Looks like they made a backup back then.
And again. The PDF I got from the 2nd repair says that no error was found. System's firmware updated. Which can't be true because I had to update it myself when I connected it to the internet. And no error was found?! Seriously? Did the error message, when turning the console on, magically dissappear or what? And my previous error too?
The new error I mentioned earlier in this thread was, when I was trying to do a save data transfer. As soon as I pressed the button, the console was crashing with that error code and had to reboot the console. - Well that error is gone now too. I can do save data transfers without issues.
Sight. I know it's just a partner workshop. But why are they "lying"? I don't understand?!? π
@Budda If I follow what's going on, I guess we can't put all our faith in "no error found". That's just a a test, or several tests, that say no error found. And those tests are only as good as the people that made them. Maybe you had an oddball scenario that slips through the cracks of known issues. Maybe the repair place isn't lying, but doesn't have the ability, time, or resources to see or explain everything.
@WoomyNNYes
My problem with that is, officially Nintendo support only knows what they wrote into the protocol. In the future when I have a problem related to the repairs, Nintendo support only knows "no error was found". Two times.
Btw. I set the word lying in quotation marks for a reason.
