Splatoon 3 3rd anniversary and SMB 40th anniversary take place on the same week (September 9th and September 13th respectively) so my guess is they do the rest of Splatoon 3 this week so they can do Mario music the week of the anniversary.
The downloads are stored within the app meaning any tracks with a ☑️ next to them can be played within the app offline.
You're probably well aware of that already, but it is a strange scenario and I don't really know how else the app would be taking up so much space apart from the few technical updates it's received.

If you click on your profile icon in the app, there should be a Data Management option that shows you how much space the app is taking up relative to your storage, as well as how much of that is spent on data and cache. My app is taking up roughly 4.5 GB, that's with eight full OSTs* and 380 "favorite" tracks downloaded. A bit over 1 GB of that is cache, so clearing that may help you.
(*Most of these are small, the only exception is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.)
So as someone very casual about my phone use, I didn't realize the difficulties I would have trying to avoid running out of space or the lack of ability to move apps to an SD card.
I hope Nintendo doesn't add more than a gb of music to what's already here, otherwise I'm done lol
I checked on my phone. The app itself is 35MB. cache was like a gigabyte so I cleared that. now it's 1 MB user data and 35MB app. Seems like it downloads a lot as you use the app so you have to clear it periodically.
I did notice that to be fair, I was just slightly hesitant because I didn't trust something wouldn't go wrong, even being fairly certain of what it would do. I figured an SD card would be enough but when it was unable to be moved to that, no matter what, I thought I was out of luck.
I think maybe I just assumed there was more to it, because I also don't trust Nintendo to get streaming in any form.

To be fair, Nintendo letting the app become gigabytes from normal use is in fact Nintendo failing to make a sane streaming app... My spotify app gets used a lot and it's only taking up 400MB even without me deleting the cache for years.
If next week truly does give a Mario soundtrack for the anniversary, then this week I shall predict either Majora’s Mask, or the rest of Splatoon 3’s soundtrack.

Thanks for the welcome! Link's Awakening is definitely a pretty bizarre omission at the moment as well (especially with two distinct versions of it), I'm sure we'll get it eventually.
@Nintoz
I feel like they would want to wait for any potential DLC to finish before doing MK World? I definitely wouldn't expect the OST the same year the game came out. Hopefully when we do get it, it isn't awkwardly split up like Forgotten Land was at least, but it is a pretty big soundtrack...

@Robot99 Given how they slapped Splatoon 3, Animal Crossing and others on the service without their DLCs, I don't think that would be much of an issue for them in the short term.
But you might be right in that it's a bit too soon, they may want to add an actual music player into the game before they think about adding it to a mobile app!
@Nintoz
Yeah that's fair, especially with Kirby last week jumping ahead of the DLC release. I actually didn't realize that Animal Crossing's OST was missing things, that pretty egregious with the base game being five years old at this point.

If Mario Kart World soundtrack was added, I am absolutely positive that they would add it in waves: there's over 300 songs in it if I heard correctly.

My top 5 favorite games:
1: Pokémon Violet
2: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
3: Animal Crossing New Horizons
4: Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
5: The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
@ShieldHero
Mario Kart World has a little under 300 tracks, if my rough count is correct, so it's pretty comparable to Tears of the Kingdom at least (344). Although they might be able to save a bit of work with MKW, since 80%+ of the soundtrack doesn't loop, and thus can't be extended. The low number of tracks that do loop are kind of complicated in that area though, with dedicated intros and outros.
What I really want to see is how Smash Ultimate eventually gets handled, it completely dwarfs anything else they could add to the app. Even if we subtract the Squeenixthird-party tracks that would likely have licensing issues, I'm pretty sure it's still over 1,000 tracks. They could soften it up by adding the other Smash games first (which account for a large percentage of Ultimate's OST), but it would still be a massive undertaking.
EDIT: It occurs to me now that a number of Smash Ultimate's tracks are direct rips from original games, so those could lower the number as well.
I strongly feel like they're never gonna add any Smash Bros after Melee.
Or either version of Super Mario RPG. (this one I'm even more sure of with how SE both has their music available online (in multiple places) and how much they've avoided NSO releases, even compared to other major publishers)
