Topic: Wii U and 3DS eShop closing. What's on your wish list?

@MarioLover92 I also highly recommend WarioWare Gold, but physical copies of it are very cheap last time I checked (at least in the UK) so I wouldn't necessarily rush to buy it from the eShop unless you really want it digitally.

@Dogorilla I'm in the US. I just checked Amazon and it's $5 off currently.

@MarioLover92 As in $5 less than full price? Hmm, it goes for a lot cheaper than that here (it's £15 new on Amazon). That's still cheaper than it will ever be on the eShop though, but I don't know what your priorities are in terms of digital vs physical games.

@Dogorilla Yes that's correct. It's $35 here. Most of the time, I pretty much do either physical or digital, and I kinda like having games like Animal Crossing downloaded on my console, so I can play it anytime without swapping game cards. I do like having a lot of the Mario games in a physical format though.

Here's what I currently have on my 3DS eShop wish list:

  • Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate
  • Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX
  • Dragon Quest VII & VIII
  • Ever Oasis
  • Etrian Odyssey V
  • Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk
  • Sayonara Umihara Kawase
  • Hydroventure: Spin Cycle
  • escapeVektor
  • Splash or Crash
  • WEAPON SHOP de OMASSE
  • Some Virtual Console titles

Some aren't digital exclusives so I'll probably go for physical whenever possible. I'll have to take a good look at Wii U eShop's offerings when I have time.

It's its, not it's.

What is a download code ?

Ninfan

Sunsy

@Ninfan A download code is something you can buy and typically redeem on the eShop. Good example, I bought F-Zero from GameStop's website, and redeeming the code gave me the game on Wii U.

I remember GameStop, Amazon, and Humble sold download codes for Wii U and 3DS, in Humble's case, 3DS.

It's an alternative way to buy digital games if you don't feel like buying directly from the Wii U, 3DS or Switch eShops.

I went and spent the first “little by little” deposit before it had a chance to accumulate… As usual.

Got the dlc chapter I was missing from Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice (since it comes with a 3DS theme as well!), a few of the cheat dlc items for Etrian Odyssey Untold 2 & Nexus, Puzzler World XL, and Oracle of Seasons.

Thes last two are repeats, since I want to have both on my regular 2DS… I kinda regret moving my main account to a New system!

About EOU2, which of the boss monster/Dungeon dlcs would you guys recommend? I won’t be getting all because they’re a lot, but I’d like having one or two.

I absolutely recommend Puzzler World XL, it’s easily the DSiWare title with the best value imo

Does anyone have any feedback regarding if HarmoKnight and Weapon Shop de Omasse are worth getting? I'm not the best at rhythm games but did enjoy the former's demo back in the day. Pretty sure I have my heart set on Crimson Shroud and Fluidity/Hydroventure: Spin Cycle.

@MarioLover92 It's hard to go wrong with any of the main five Wario Land titles IMO. I haven't played Wario World (Because GCN, plus I think it's considered a spinoff) or Virtual Boy Wario Land (Kinda obvious why not lol). As for the Battle Network games, my personal favorites are 3 (Only played White) and 6 (played both; I prefer Gregar), though it's hard to go wrong with any of them...but the first is definitely hard to go back to after playing the others.

I have most of the VC entries I want in some form, though I still need to do my Kirby eval. I'm mostly focused on system exclusives that interest me at this time.

Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)

Wario Land 3 might be my favorite GBC game... That doesn't have Zelda or Pokemon in the name. Which is weird when you consider I didn't particularly like any of the other games in the series...

It's a great game.

Pokémon Picross.

Even if you are against hacking your 3DS now, which is valid and understandable, you may want to hack it in the future after the eShop closes to play digital only games that only released on 3DS that you didn’t even know you wanted until it was too late. A exploit using Pokémon Picross allows you to jailbreak your 3DS in the future (quite easily I may add) should you choose to do so.

I know it isn’t the specific point of this thread, but 3DS games I recommend downloading before the eShop closes so can you have a legit copy:

-Pocket Card Jockey and Harmoknight: Both are games made by GameFreak that are totally worth the price of admission. Harmoknight does have some frustrating levels that may test your patience, but it’s still a good game. Pocket Card Jockey on the other hand is absolutely amazing and also only $8. If you like solitaire, you will love the twists Pocket Card Jockey brings. Super underrated and I’ve spent 30 hours on it through multiple replays and I’ve still never 100% it.

-Game Boy and Game Boy Color virtual console games. Hopefully Nintendo makes them available on Switch at some point, but 3DS will probably still be the better way to play them as you’ll own a copy instead of needing a subscription. I especially recommend the 3 Wario Land games, the first is on the OG Gameboy and the second and third on Color. Super underrated with design philosophies that still hold up all these years later. The GB/GBC Pokémon games like Yellow and Crystal are the only way to get Pokémon from the first two generations legitimately into the modern games, so buying them is good if you care about the series for posterity’s sake. Crystal especially is still mindblowingly packed with content and allows you to shiny hunt in some unique ways through differing breeding mechanics, as well as a Shiny Celebi with your OT. I also recommend Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, great GB platformer that feels a lot meatier than the first Super Mario Land which felt like it wasn’t really made for the hardware like the sequel is.

Before I list my wishlist, I want to start by giving a shoutout to Metroid: Zero Mission, Drill Dozer and Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures, three Virtual Console games I decided to get on my Wii U literally one week before the 3DS/WII U eShops closure was announced.
Little did I know back then that those would be the first of my last purchases on the past eShops and they more or less put my wishlist checking in motion.

NoA and NoE seemingly haven't mentioned it, but NCL (the Japanese division) has mentioned that they will cease the eShops operations on March 28th, 2023 at 9:00am JST. Convert that to your equivalent time. Mine translates as March 27th, 2023 at 6:00pm, which means I'll have one last day to download stuff on my 3DS at work since my internet at home hates the 3DS and about 3 hours for my Wii U after I get home that day... unless I bring my Wii U to work (laughs).

My main objective is to make my Wii U "the" legacy system of my collection for my tastes thanks to the games it has to offer on all the fronts: Physical, Digital, Virtual Console games from NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS and TurboGrafx-16 plus Wii Download Versions and all the Wii discs, Virtual Console and WiiWare I have on Wii Mode.
Of course funds are limited, so I won't be able to get everything I want.

This comment will be updated periodically to strike, add and remove games as needed. Sorry, this will be a long list and I cannot find a way to make it dropdown.
✔️ = got it

As of March 10th, I have taken the difficult decision to forfeit my 3DS eSho.p purchases and I'm only getting a select few. This decision is so I can complete my plan of "the" legacy system I have in mind for my Wii U. Games with a ✖️ are the ones I've decided not to get.

FINAL EDIT: Today is March 27th, 2023 at 6:00pm PT, and the past eShops ability to purchase games is no longer available. None of what I type from here on now matters anymore. What was bought was bought and what wasn't wasn't. You can't win them all.
Overall, I think my Wii U is as gaming ready as it can be, but at the cost of sacrificing the 3DS purchases in the end. I'm satisfied with how I was able to build my Wii U.

I will certainly miss looking at the eShops to find new games or rediscover some of my favorite classics.

Why is Kirby Super Star Ultra not on the Wii U Virtual Console? And why SEGA didn't release the Sonic Advance trilogy in the West? They did in Japan, but not here. And don't come up with issues with THQ, they're nowhere to be credited in-game.

Many of the Wii Download Versions I own physically, but as an appreciation for these games and its era I want to get them digitally as well. It won't be a big deal if I don't get them though.
Much like these, I also have many of the DS ones physically. In fact, I own all of them expect Jungle Climber and Spirit Tracks, but the convenience and the fact many of them don't work as well these days seems to be a good reason to also include them.

DLC
✔️Xenoblade Chronicles X High-Speed Data Loading Packs (I intend to get the physical version eventually, and these downloads are meant for that, they're useless for the digital version. Any other DLC the game may have is seemingly included in the base game for the western versions)

✖️Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water chapters
✖️Super Smash Bros. for Wii U DLC I'm missing: Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy, Corrin and a lot of Mii Fighters costumes. The costumes might not be that much of a necessity, though.
✖️New Super Mario Bros. 2 Coin Rush DLC Courses
✔️The games in Rusty's Real Deal Baseball
✖️Gem Apples of Team Kirby Clash Deluxe to make the Apple Tree grow to its maximum level (though that's a microtransaction, not DLC. I hope it's like in Super Kirby Clash in that it discourages you from making more purchases at one point)
✖️The StreetPass Mii Plaza games not called "Slot Car Rivals" plus (maybe) StreetPass Mii Plaza VIP.
✔️Updates for 3DS games I don't own but eventually will. I don't know if there's a way to do so on Wii U, as getting DLC doesn't seem to work to get those updates, unlike the Switch.

Rusty's Real Deal Baseball is now a hidden gem of the Nintendo 3DS.

I know I'm probably beating a dead horse here but I really don't like the move to shut down the Wii U and 3DS eShop. Controversial opinion I know! I mean with the Wii and DS online services I can see why that happened. They leant on a company who ended up being brought by IGN and was then shut down. Possibly the Wii and DS storefronts were tied to that in some way, I'm not sure. But I can kinda get that. Also I'm fairly sure the Wii/DS storefronts used TLS 1.0 which is unsecure and was dropped by most companies in 2020. It does make sense

But as far as I'm aware there's no such cloud over the Wii U and 3DS. I mean the funds on those storefronts have been tied to your Nintendo Account since it was created in early 2016. And to Nintendo Network ID since the Wii U launched. I mean maybe they want to shut down the Nintendo Network ID service? I mean possibly. But I highly doubt it's costing them that much to keep it going

Basically my point is, I've been a pretty vocal defender of Nintendo. A lot of times well against the outrage culture and people looking at Nintendo from outside of the "core fans". Some of their supposed bad moves, like IMO NSO, I think have merit. But shutting down the Wii U and 3DS eShops and especially now? ...... I don't see why it's necessary. The only positive for anyone I see out of this is that Nintendo makes a few bucks from people rushing to buy stuff from them before they close it down

For me, I wouldn't be rushing to buy games that were only available on the Wii U and 3DS eShops. I don't think people should be rewarding this move. If you really want to play these titles? To be completely blunt, this is one of those very rare occasions I'd argue that piracy is justified. Especially after the door shuts on these store fronts next year

I’ve been snapping up Atlus titles periodically over the past couple of years whenever there’s a sale. The only one still on my wish list is Devil Survivor Overclocked, which never goes on sale in the EU. Literally not once since release. May just bite the bullet.

I’ll probably get Boxboy, but not sure Pullblox appeals. And I bought DQVII physical this week, so that saves me space on the memory card.

One of the only other titles I want is the third 999 game - which is no longer even available on the eShop. But my 3DS is hacked, so if I really can’t get it another way, there are options. I could ease my conscience by buying it on another platform, even if I’d rather play on 3DS.

It looks like some games from my wishlist have been delisted some years ago, as far as I can tell right now: Meat Boy, Jotun, and Battle Chopper (TG16) ... at least they dont show in the North American eShop

I was thinking to contact the developers/publisher via twitter or email, and ask them if they can relist them for this last eShop year. Do you guys think they could do that? Is it worth a shot?

Capcom and Lightwood Games have several of their games on sale on the 3DS eshop at the moment.

I noticed Link-A-Pix Color from Lightwood was on the sale, and I assumed it was the same game I have on the Switch, which has Deluxe instead of Color in the name, and comes with more puzzles.... But then I went and checked, and it turns out the content from the 3DS game is sold as DLC for the Switch game, and with the sale, buying the 3DS game is actually cheaper. So I went and grabbed that.

Are the Ace Attorney games on sale at the moment in North America? If so, could someone please check whether the Spirit of Justice DLC is included in the sale (or does anyone know if it's usually included in sales)? Asking because I still need that DLC and I want to know if there's any point in waiting to see if Capcom does another 3DS sale in Europe.
