Guys, a new, very promising looking F-Zero game called Aero GPX is currently in development. The kickstarter is up and running and has 16 days to go. Funding goal has been achieved but there are stretch goals: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/aaronmac64/aero-gpx
The developer Aaronmac64, has been working on the game for some years now. He has since assembled a team to further develop and finish the game. Jagg2zero, a known expert F-Zero X speedrunner, has already signed up for the test pilot program and thus will be able to provide feedback to the team. As I've said it's looking promising.
This is great news for F-Zero fans. The past years we've seen new futuristic racing games hit the market, but they've all basically emulated the very different WipeOut style of play. We are now finally looking at a proper new 3D F-Zero with track editor included, as well as modern online play.
While I could personally be happy playing F-Zero X for the rest of my days, its track editor is only available on the 64DD or through unofficial emulation, and it lacks online multiplayer (the dream of 30 player races). This game will introduce the masterclass in racing that is F-Zero to a whole new generation of gamers.
It's been a long time coming...
Trailer
Jagg2zero - time attack
Graslu00 - demo playthrough (no commentary)
WalaBob - first impressions
Custom-R - an F-Zero fan's observations
Edit: two other games worth looking into, that aim to emulate F-Zero's style of play, are Super Pilot and Turbo Force.
If you're into F-Zero, check out the F-Zero reddit. Great active community. Lot of cool stuff gets posted there.
If you aren't, but like racing games, consider checking out the games, you won't regret it. Can't go wrong with either 3D F-Zero (X or GX). With the 2D F-Zeros, Climax is considered the best one, but Japan-only. GP Legend, based on the anime, is often cited as a fan favorite. Different F-Zero games have different physics and driving techniques. They will pose a challenge.
I'll leave you with the iconic soundtrack of the original F-Zero:
