Well, the console doesn't have a built in mic. For starters, you need a wired headset with a mic. You need to put it into the headphone jack next to the cartradge slot. The switch doesn't have bluetooth, so bluetooth headsets won't work.
The next step is a small in-game quirk they added in the new update to fortnite. While in the game, go to the in game settings. Then go to audio. (Your kid will probobly know where to go) At the bottom of the menu, there will be a thing called "chat in filled lobbies" (or something like that). Switch it to game.
If everything is done right, you should be good to go. Just @ me if you have any trouble.
Edit: I forgot to mention that Fortnite is the only game with built-in voice chat from the switch itself. If you want to chat on mario kart or matio party or games like that while playing online, you need Nintendo Switch Online, a special headset, and a phone app. It's way to complicated, so I suggest using an app with group chat capabilities such as discord for chatting on other games.
Hi,
My son tried that but it still didn’t work. Have been in to Game and they’ve told me about the uselessness of Nintendo too, saying no doubt Nintendo will bring out a new console and fix that problem! So annoying!
I think we’ve resigned to the fact that he can’t communicate with friends on Fortnite on his Nintendo, and I’ll take a look at the cost of upgrading the Xbox 360!
Nothings ever easy!
Thanks for your help.

Well that sucks. I know that I've heard plenty of headsets don't work. Maybe the mic is off or something? I dunno. I used to use a headset from 5 below that did the trick. I just use discord now. Good luck!
Btw, rumor is that there may be a new xbox coming out sometime this year. I think a new headset might be the cheaper option.
