A couple of years ago I bought a 2nd hand WII to play with the kids and it's been brilliant. Me and my three kids have spent countless hours playing Super Mario Bros, amongst other games. We've competed the whole thing a couple of times and still go back and have fun playing the levels together. The key thing about it is the fact that all four of us can play and of course the game play is brilliant.
My question to the group is I would love to have a very similar super mario game for the four of us to play. I'd be willing to buy a new Nintendo console just for that game. So does such a super mario game exist? Maybe on the Wii U? Must be 4 player like the Wii version. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Like @Anti-Matter said, you can get a recent 4 player Mario game on the Switch. However, that game is a port from the Wii U so it will be better to go for the Wii U, go for the Wii U. Also, the Wii U supports the Wii remotes but the Nintendo Switch. The switch comes with two controllers and two more will cost you around $80 and the game will cost $55 so the total will be around $435. So, the Wii U should be cheaper but the Switch will have more recent games. But if you just want Mario, go for the Wii U. There's also Mario 3D world on there for more 4 player Mario.
@Chesl73 you have super Mario 3d world for the Wii u and Mario Bros u which are similar experiences. Kirby and the rainbow paintbrush is 4 players too which is similar. If you still have the Wii. You can also try kirbys adventure
