Topic: Which gaming publication has the most accurate reviews?

Posts 1 to 20 of 50

ever since Metacritic has been revamped, ive enjoyed looking at the average scores that publications give to games and how they differ from other websites. some publications that i thought were too lenient turned out to be pretty tough on games and visa versa.
So my question is which gaming publication gives the most accurate reviews in your mind? For me its:
NintendoLife
Gamespot
EGM

to me Famitsu and NP, they dont hate on graphic, i think 29/40 or 8/10 is about right for Sonic Unleased, but more for Famitsu since its like 7.3 or so. GI hate sonic or Non-1st party Nintendo Games, they Game DK Jungle Climber a 5.5 while NP Gave it an 8/10 and Famitsu gave it a 31/40

None. Reviews are based on opinion, and no opinion can be "Right" or "Most Accurate".

Hey guys, you're in danger of falling into a subjective void here in which every "opinion" is just as good as any other opinion. Then it really is game over. Yes, reviews are based in part on someone's opinion. We can't escape our subjectivity totally but at least we can be aware of it and try to compensate for ways in which we may be being too biased. This is what communication is at it's most basic level, the attempt to overcome mere subjectivity and share our experiences, arrive at some consensus or contrast. So, though reviews are always based on opinions, are they based on an educated opinions? Could you tell if it was? These are the questions you should be asking rather than dismissing everything as mere opinion.

Like others have said, it's all pretty subjective. People are likely to base this on whichever publication comes closest to their own tastes.

Publication? When I hear the word "publication" I think print, in which case Nintendo Life would be out of the running (and even though I'm obviously slightly biased in this regard, I honestly do think Nintendo Life is the best site for Nintendo reviews). For print publications, I think Nintendo Power has actually become a pretty valid source of reviews in recent years. They're much more critical of first party Nintendo games than most Nintendo-based websites/publications, but they're fair as well. I certainly don't think they're the best gaming journalists out there, but I tend to agree with their reviews.

Score-wise, I actually tend to agree with IGN a lot. Gametrailers is very in-depth with their actual reviews, so I always go there. Nintendolife, on the other hand, I can actually have problems with score-wise, not acutal-review-wise. They tend to overate games that really aren't as great as they say, (NSMBWii and Little King's Story come to mind for me.)
Oh, and I believe that TWEWY deserves and 11 out of 10 score regardless of anybody's opinions.

GameSpot, usually.

The Game.

Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.

idk, i usually hang around Metacritic for a reason -- i prefer having lots of opinions to go by instead of just one or two. i will say that most of Nintendo Life's reviews have been pretty spot-on IMO, except maybe one or two I mildly disagreed with and one in particular that still pisses me off to all hell because it led me to purchase the one game i absolutely can. not. stand.

I also like NP for the VC/WW/DSiWare of recommended, Humm, and Grumble Grumble.

So do you actually read Famitsu, or just the scores?

Famitsu's not bad, but it's not great either. I tend to side with Game Informer - especially the local Australian edition.

It can be hard to find good Wii reviews since alot of sites seem to hate Nintendo/Wii and don't give them a fair review, when it comes to a review you should not be bias towards a different system you should review the game for what it is.

I hate when I'm reading a review and they say such and such game is better on such and such system, I don't really care what it's like on that system, if I wanted to know what a game is like on another system I would look it up.

End of rant.

Except for the most part the Wii (and most of the Wii games) is inferior to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, so it should be getting less positive reviews.

"Being good for a Wii game" doesn't really justify giving it the same "score" as a good game on another console.

Problem is that for every system, there is more shovelware then quality titles. So I mean, that's like saying most ps2 games are inferior to gamecube games because most ps2 games were shovelware. We all know that the ps2 did really good gaming wise though, lol.

I'd say IGN. I know, they are very weird at some points cough dragon quest IX cough, but I'm generally in favor of their scores. NL reviews are not the best, but I generally come here to find sleeper hits. I've bought many quality titles that I would've never known existed (Little king's story, Muramasa, etc...).

I think it's fine to like one more then the other that is not the point, I just think when it comes to a review you should not show favoritism each review should be a separate deal.
