I first learned about them around 2000-2002. I was about 4-6 years old, and we went over to our cousins house. They collect game consoles, and I wanted to play the SNES. I don't remember which Zelda it was, but when I first played it, I hated every second of it.
I don't know why but I just hated it! I learned about Link though, from SSB, but never heard of his game. I vowed I would never play that game again!
(No GameCube memories, because my parents wanted the PS2 more)
Then, in, I think, 2007 we got a Wii. When SSBB came out, I saw that link dude again, and I always used him, aside from Diddy Kong, Peach and Zelda. When I noticed this Zelda chick, and Ganandorf were from the same game as him, I go interested.
So I googled who Link, Zelda, and Ganandorf were. I became more excited than ever, and started researching all of these Zelda games I never heard of before! Then, I noticed that this game I was excited for now, was the same game I vowed never to play, and thought was the worst game ever o_O
After I learned that, I stopped my self from searching th web for this game, because I wanted to think it sucked. Deep down though, I was still excited to play this game.
A few days later I went to my friends house, and while looking at his Wii games, I discovered he had Zelda: Twilight Princess! I broke the promise I made, and borrowed his game.
At first, I couldn't even get past that part where the shop lady is missing her cat >.< When I tried again, and finally passed it, I fell in love with the game! I loved, mostly, every part of the game, and regretted I never found out about it until now! Now, Zelda is one of my favorite franchises
Back when i first moved here, my mom had to find a baby sitter. And she just happened to have a Nintendo 64, with Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, the works. I loved Zelda, even though i was playing an already completed save file
I learned about it shortly after the release of Ocarina of Time. That was before I owned any game systems, so my cousin let me play through the game on his N64.
My first contact with Zelda was the old cartoon that used to air along with The Super Mario Brothers Super Show, way back when. Then, thanks to a videogame magazine, I learned there actually were games about it, but I didn't have the chance to play any of them. Quite a few years passed and, eventually, the first Zelda game I played was Link's Awakening. And it was magical.
i first saw link, as well as ness, samus, kirby, and captain falcon in SSB but didn't think anything of them. then i got a gamecube with collector's edition and falled in love
Lots of censorship here...

I can remember watching the cartoon when I was a kid, and had no idea it was about a game.
I didn't play a Zelda game until my cousin was liquidating his N64 games and I bought Ocarina of Time and Banjo Kazooie off him. I have been addicted to Zelda games ever since. I own every Zelda game that has been released in my region. I own 3 copies of Ocarina (original cartrige, collecters eddition and the ocarina/master quest one from windwaker), and will have 4 once 3D gets released on the 30th.
On a side note: I finally got Banjo Tooie recently.
It's just an empty pot...

There's something at the bottom!
It's just somebody's gum...
Hmm my first real Zelda game was A Link To The Past!
I went to my local gaming store (dont remember how old i was) and he said buy this game! its soo popular! so i did. i still remember when link steps out of his little house and right into that thunderstorm! i was hooked from that moment on!
