Probably JRPG. Action & Action/Adventure are up there too though.

I love a good Metroidvania, as well. Metroid itself is one of my favorite Nintendo franchises, and I also like Hollow Knight, even though it gets real tough. I should come back to that game sometime. I actually like puzzle games too, Tetris for the Game Boy is one of my comfort games.

I like JRPGs when I'm in the mood for them, though a lot of them get a bit complex for my liking, and they can be very long. So it's easy for me to get burnt out by them. Same thing with tactical games like Fire Emblem. I overthink things a lot when I play these kind of games, so I found myself just playing one stage per session because of that.

@FishyS Oh man, I didn’t even know it was an argument. But I mean, it goes without saying it’s in the metroidvania genre, even though it’s simply a Metroid game, right?

It's like how only some of the Castlevania games are actually Metroidvanias even though they're in the name of the genre. Some say that 3D games can't really be metroidvanias because the type of crazy platforming power ups in most 2D metroidvanias don't work quite as well in 3D and the nonlinearity tends to have a different flavor. Also, there is the question of whether you even allow a metroidvania to be first person.

It's obviously a made-up term so whether you call metroid prime a metroidvania or a 'non-linear first-person action adventure game with power-ups' doesn't really matter. People just like to argue the boundaries and definitions of genres like metroidvania versus action rpg versus whatever you call traditional Zelda games since those are all action adventure games with character progression.

@FishyS I think game genres as a whole are kind of silly anyways. It’s sometimes really hard to narrow down what a game is from a list of descriptors. Especially games like Prime that pushed the boundaries of it’s genre. And as a result we have people who try to narrow it down as a “3D First Person Action/Adventure Puzzle Game.” And like you said, genres tend to bleed together. I could see an argument for classic Zelda being a metroidvania since you need to gather power ups in a certain order to progress through the word. Game genres are kinda messy as a whole, though, so I personally don’t see much of a point in debating it. Definitely an interesting topic, though.

Currently playing:

Persona 3 Reload (PC)
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy (PC)

Ironcore

Racing simulator (gran turismo)
Open world driving game (forza horizon)
Vertical shooter/bullet hell (gunvein, graze counter)
Arena shooter (geometry wars)
Puzzle games (tetris, baba is you, logic games)

I mostly play indie games other than gran turismo and the odd nintendo first party game. I play so many genres/sub genres that it would be easier to list the genres I dont like.
