My favorite is Final Fantasy IV, since I really haven't played that many of them. I really liked the characters, the tragic story, and the music is really memorable too.
FF7 it was also the first one I ever played just loved the character and story and got really caught up in it all, FF2/4 and FF9 are my other fav's, least fav would have to be FF8 and Crystal Bearers couldn't stand them at all.
I kinda hate Final Fantasy forever now. Even the games I like, I realize that makes no sense.
That being said, IX. Here's the thing though, I've only played the first hour IX. But I've seen a lot of the game. It is like the opposite of everything wrong with modern Final Fantasy and it gets everything right and is really fun and can go from lighthearted to tragic and I love the characters and it all works so well. I'm really dissappointed I never got to play past the first hour in this game.
That being said, my favorite I've played is IV. K.I.S.S.
I haven't played much Final Fantasy (one day I'll motivate myself to purchase Final Fantasy IV Collection for the PSP), but out of the two I played, it would be Final Fantasy VI for the Game Boy Advance

Okay um, when I say favorite "Final Fantasy" I mean the main series. Crystal Bearers is a spin-off, while The Last Story and Dragon Quest aren't even under the Final Fantasy name
But anyways, interesting favorites. Of course a lot of people like VI and VII, I think they're both the most popular.
As for favorite Final Fantasy... I'd have to go with Final Fantasy Vlll. By a landslide.
For some reason I feel like you're just saying that to be contrary. But it does have really good gameplay. It's just that I'd be hard pressed to find a way the story didn't suck.
My favorite is X, but IV comes in at a close second.
It's kind of unfair to list it, as it's a spin off, but I actually enjoyed Chrystal Bearers on Wii. Although it was criminally short for an RPG, I enjoyed the unique combat system, and the cinematic story. If it didn't have the FF name attached to it, and thus didn't have as much to live up to, I think it would have fared better.
