For me I play a lot, but I'm not particularly good at them. So the one I'm really enjoying is Samurai Shodown. The combos are really short, and the moves are really powerful, which I find more enjoyable to play online.

I've always liked Mortal Kombat over anything else. I too was never very good at these games but i prefer the simplicity of the button combinations of MK over the complex combo system in street fighter. MK is just cooler to me also in alot of ways. Not just the gory finishers either. I like how each character has a well thought out backstory and they have reasons for fighting. MK to me is like Sonic as in it's the cooler edgier game with an attitude and street fighter is the dull worn out fat plumber if you get my meaning.

Plus i can't help grinning watching one guy rip the brains / guts or whatever vital organs out of the other guy as your reward for winning! FINISH HIM!

I do enjoy Mortal Kombat. I think my favourite is MKX. It feels like it's more fluid than MKXI. My favourite part about the newer games are the brutalities, I like the surprise you just got cut in two factor.

Tekken and Soul Calibur for me. 3 and 2 respectively being the best. Have always really enjoyed the Namco fighting games. The movement, the characters and especially with SC series the single player campaigns are amazing.

Sonic Battle, a fighting game I don't see talked about much, even with Sonic fans. I love this game because the story mode is kinda like an RPG, as in you have story and an overworld. The core gameplay itself is fighting up to four other characters. One of the coolest aspect is a robot named Emerl, and he's able to grind and collect cards to learn other character's moves.

Also, the challenge mode is good arcade-style single player fun, and multiplayer battle mode is fun with a friend if you have extra copies of the game and GBAs. Friend and I played it last year together.

I remember Tekken 3 most for the beachball mode and the little orange dragon. I had Soul Calibur 2 on the gamecube, really enjoyed it, plus playing as Link was a novelty.

Soul Calibur VI is my wife's favourite fighting game, we love the tense exchanges when someone's on the brink of getting a ring out. I absolutely suck at Soul Calibur though. I think it's because I usually play defensively, but you get stuffed for defending too much in SC6

Tekken 3 because it takes me be back to my high school days. Everybody played Tekken 3 back in high school and it was part of the start of video games becoming mainstream and not just for so called nerds. It proved we weren't nerds we were just ahead of the curve. OK we were nerds.

Smash Bros. of course. (Melee for the nostalgia, Ultimate for the sheer amount of content) And it's not just about the fan service, it's basically the only fighting game I'm competent at. lol

I'm waiting on a sale to get Ultimate. I've got 4 and all the DLC. So it felt like a very expensive expansion pack. However now they've added Terry. It's feeling more enticing.

I love them all, but Samurai Shodown is my favorite series of all time, I’m really enjoying the new game now.

Dragonball Fighter Z has also gotten my attention, it’s arguably the best current fighting game on any system.

Of course Mortal Kombat, Smash, and ARMS get plenty of love from me.

But the fighting game I’ve played more than any other game by far is EA UFC 2. Originally bought it for my PS4 then rebought for my One X. I’ve put over 2,000 hours into it. If you are a fan of fighting games and MMA it doesn’t get any better than EA UFC 2.

Series wise it’s Virtua Fighter. Still the best technical fighter ever made.

For personal favorite: capcom vs snk 2. Aside from being born and raised on both companies fighting games, I love the groove system and that it felt more weighty than most vs games (which are usually rushdown games. I’m not knocking that but I don’t find it fun) after that... x men children of the atom...I miss the 90s arcade games.

The Samurai Shodown series is cool because of how dangerous the attacks can be. It's unlike most other fighters. As for my favorites, I grew sick of Capcom and Street Fighter. Street Fighter 2 seemed to get too many small updates. Street Fighter Alpha's visuals did not appeal to me. And I was no longer interested in the Marvel characters. I remember a friend taking me to a local comic shop in 1998 that had arcade games. We went specifically to see Street Fighter 3. While it was impressive in its own way, I didn't like it. But next to it was a familiar, red Neo Geo cabinet, and it was running King of Fighters '97. I loved everything about it just from watching it. The visuals and character designs were more to my taste, and the fighting system looked great. I got it for my Saturn a couple of months later. KOF '98 was even better. As I said, I love the visual style. I love the four-button game play and the evasion roll. The game downplays projectiles and encourages up-close action.

Another of my favorites, also from SNK, is the first Last Blade(part two is great as well, but I prefer the first). It has beautiful character sprites and backgrounds. I love the combo system(in Speed mode) and the repel button.

Smash Bros. if you count that as a fighting game. That's the series I've spent most time with and the one I have most fun with.

The most nostalgic would be Samurai Shodown. I used to play the Mega Drive version of the first game with my friend all the time when we were young. I only just recently got back to Samurai Shodown when IV dropped on the eShop. Also got the new game. It's exactly what I want from SamSho. It plays great. I just need someone to play it with locally. Online just ain't the same thing.

I got into King of Fighters a year or two ago and it's awesome too. I really like the movement options in those games and the great cast of characters. I played some Fatal Fury 2 (console version once again) when I was a kid but it didn't quite grab me. But at least it introduced me to Terry and some other characters.

@Sunsy I had a friend who was obsessed with Sonic Battle. He played it all the time. I got it few years ago on a holiday trip but I haven't actually played it. I'm not that into Sonic but I felt like I needed to get it since it was really cheap. I'll get around to it someday.

It's its, not it's.

I don't have a favorite because I don't play a ton of them. Of those I have played, Smash Bros Melee, ARMS, and SoulCalibur 2 are probably my favorites.

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

I personally don't like and don't see Smash Bros as a true fighting game. It's more like a multiplayer brawlfest/party game. Real fighters should be 1 on 1. Otherwise, you're talking about a beat 'em up or something as Smash Bros, which is an outlier because it doesn't completely fit any of these two categories of fighting games.

Now, as for my favorites: for regular fighters, it HAS to be the Dead or Alive series. Once you look past the "jiggle factor" of the female fighters, you'll find a super-accomplished game, that has SO many layers, both literal and on a technical level, that you can keep exploring as you go through them. And the literal layers, where you have various heights/platforms in each level, that you can throw your opponent off from, WITHOUT it ending the fight or resulting in a ring out, are also what I like about this series. It makes it a very tactical fighter as well. All in all, a VERY entertaining series, and games that can accommodate both beginners and experienced players, without making it unfair either way. (aka button mashers being able to win from people who actually know and can apply complicated moves and combos)

As a second choice, or rather another first choice, but for weapons-based fighters, the ONLY choice in my opinion, is the SoulCalibur series. Ever since being completely blown away by the first game on the Sega Dreamcast, I've been a fan of this series, and it is always a joy to play. And what's more, it has ALWAYS looked good, and even nowadays, when I boot up the old Dreamcast through my VGA box, it STILL looks good on my current TV, which is simply amazing, and testament to the skill of the developers and animators of the series.

Like Dead or Alive, SoulCalibur offers many layers, and you cannot win simply by button mashing your way through it, especially not in later matches. And finding out and making all these defensive and offensive combos has a real natural flow to them, in my opinion, and once you know them, you'll be able to string multiple ones together, to beat your opponent in next to no time.

Honorable mentions go to very close seconds Virtua Fighter and Mortal Kombat, but the other two are slightly better on all fronts, in my opinion.

@Late Hope you enjoy it when you get around to playing it. It is different than your usual Sonic game and fighting game, and in my opinion, worth trying, even if story mode has a bit of a grind for Emerl.

I found my main complaint with DBZ is how long the game takes to load(I've got it on standard XBoxOne and it's so slow). I think visually it's stunning, but I prefer the gameplay of Marvel Infinite(minus the infinite gems)

I was tempted to pick up the new DOA, then I saw the cost of the DLC. YOWZA It's pricey. As for Smash I think it's both, and really depends how you play. 1 ON 1 No items is a fighting game. 4 player+ with items on is a party game. It's one of the rare occasions where the game is a jack of all trades, and master of both. It's definitely a non traditional fighting game, that not all fighting game fans will like. However as a dream match generator, with a surprisingly balanced roster it's fantastic.

I really want a rerelease of Capcom Vs SNK 2 and Marvel vs Capcom 2. I missed out on playing them back in the day.
