Topic: What Games Do You Think Are Overated?

@Bolt_Strike I think in a lot of cases, when you play them matters a lot. A lot of the snes games you listed, would have been the pinnacle of the genre when they released. So if you played them then, they would have been more memorable, and what followed more derivative

@C-Chakra I kinda agree too. I thought Undertale was fine, but it didn’t blow me away. However, although I didn’t know the story, enough spoilers had come my way that
I decided to do a pacifist run first time around - which completely kills the impact of the game. However, given that I really disliked the bullet hell battle system, I still don’t think I would have loved it. I can see why other people do, though.

@Heavyarms55 I’m sorry it offends you. This thread isn’t made to shame others for playing video games, nor is it a one-way ticket to laughter and outright rudeness for playing something others don’t like. It’s just a silly thread to show and respect others opinions. ❤️

I think as long as the subject promotes conversation it's harmless. It's when people get ahem "butthurt" that we lose track of what we're talking about.

@Krull That's a good point. I played Undertale after the hype died down, but I still knew there was this subversive twist going in to play it. I played the same way as you initially. Definately colored my perception of the experience.

Overrated is quite hard, I've played plenty of games that I don't like that are highly rated, but it's usually because they're just not my type of game.

I'm gonna go fire emblem warriors. I like fire emblem, I like dynasty warriors. Fire Emblem Warriors just didn't hook me.

well i had enough of a waiting period after continuing my war against the word "overrated"

If we're going for games whose extremely high ratings seem absurd, its always funny when everyone after a year thinks "why was this considered a 90+?", including like half the people who made those reviews. I literally watched a video by a guy baffled he gave Bioshock Infinite a 10/10 back in the day, and even as a lifelong defender of that game, its constant perfect ratings never made much sense, and at most was a sign at how bad most FPS games played in the Xbox 360 era if its mediocre shooting gameplay (elevated by the parts that weren't shooting, obviously) wasn't an issue. But I still get why people gave it a 10, since its best points are still some of the best in gaming, maybe ever. But its funny to look at the reaction to Fire Emblem: Fates or GTA 4, games I know little about but just know that the general consensus is that they are lesser games in their series. This already has little to do with my own opinion, which is a good thing tbh, because that doesn't matter. What's more interesting is seeing when critical reviews don't reflect the consensus outside of reviewers. And tbh, a lot of the time because either reviewers or fans are being kinda stupid. Occasionally both!

But in terms of games I didn't like as much as everyone, I always go to Vanquish. Beat the game once, found the limitations put onto quicker movement got in the way of the fun, instead it just made it Gears of War again, despite trying to be a much more fun Gears of War. I don't want Gears of War in my anything, unless you count Mass Effect 2/3's gameplay. Worst, most useless story and waste of needlessly long cutscenes from Platinum too, way too short a game to have that much boring story. But even then, I could see myself maybe liking ut more if I ever bothered to replay it. It is Platinum, these games are meant to be mastered. But I'd rather play games I like rather than force myself to try to like one I was meh about.

@kkslider5552000 thank you for posting! I know, some people may judge us for our gaming choices, but I won’t. Your opinions are just as good as mine, so I want to thank you so much for getting the courage and typing that. 😊

@kkslider5552000 I see what you are saying now! I was wondering why you were so caustic earlier, as I thought the post was just “which very popular or acclaimed game do you personally not like” - but I can understand now why you took issue with it. It definitely isn’t worth having an argument about ratings, ever.

Fortunately, opinions are interesting - that’s why I read reviews - and so was yours! Think that whole concept of critical appreciation being revised over time is worth looking at. There are plenty of 1980s and 1990s games that I loved at the time, but wouldn’t look twice at today. I bet Mutant Monty has aged really badly...

@Apportal In my experience calling games overrated is little more than a thinly veiled excuse to tell people why the games they like actually suck and they should be ashamed for liking them. But I'm the one who made the mistake of clicking on the thread - so that's on me.

Have a nice day.

@Heavyarms55 I’m sorry it offends you friend. I’m not going to judge anyone in this thread by their gaming choices, nor do I encourage anyone else. Like I’ve said before, this is just a fun thread to share opinions. Sorry 😞

@Wargoose Somewhat. But regardless of when you first play it, if you're in the mood to go back and play a game from that IP, which one are you going to go for, the one that's like 10 other games in the series or the one that has a unique hook?

ComradeThom

I found the indie darling 'Gris' to be very overrated.

I'm a big fan of the artsy indie scene of games so was excited to play a watercolour aesthetic puzzle platformer about grief - I know right? I must be a right lark at parties...

Anyhow, I got exactly what I was promised and yet, it didn't really strike me as great. The depictions of grief felt surface level at best, and whilst it is a pretty game, I don't think it made the best use of its visual assets. It always wanted to zoom out to focus on the platforming, whereas the art shined best when it was up close and personal with the protagonist.

It explored some emotions many games don't, but not in a way that I felt were meaningful or personal. I admire the game's ambition and I enjoyed the experience enough that I didn't regret playing it, but the nine out of tens this game kept getting from reviewers felt way overblown.

But thats just like my opinion man.

@ComradeThom Agreed. I've not played it all by any means, but the opening hour is bang average. The water painting effects are just a gimmick background for a dull game so far. Very glad I waited for a decent sale price, but still would happily get a refund and not play the rest of it at this stage.

@Mintendoll I kind of agree on Mario Odyssey, It just didn't hook me the way Mario Galaxy or Luigis Mansion 3 did.

I really like Breath of the Wild though, it's got it's weaknesses but it's got a great sense of discovery. It felt fresh. I pretty much like all the Zelda games from the SNES onwards though. The only one I thought was a bit lacking was Twilight Princess, and I think that was mainly because of the lack of style in the twilight realm. Compared to a link to the pasts dark world it was a bit bland.

Wargoose

Banjo-

There are more overrated than underrated games because websites tend to give 9s and 10s too easily. In my opinion, both Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey are massively overrated but they are not the only ones, first-party Nintendo and Sony games are usually overrated.

@aquinas1776 I prefer the puzzle features more than an open world Zelda game. And whoever said Zelda games don’t have story should go to basically any Zelda game 😂

Any call of duty or several open world games. I've always preferred a more focused single player experience with a story where you just can't wait to see what happens next to a 100 + hour fetch quest/collectathon. There are some exceptions where i like open world games but honestly I'm quite burnt out on the genre and i think it needs a rest. Every new major release doesn't have to be open world.

Oh man, I might as well throw my hat into this ring...

The Last Of Us - I was hooked by the story, but the gameplay was so atrocious that it made it a slog to get through.

Mario Kart 8 - Sorry, but every race result basically just comes down to complete luck as to whether you have the right items to defend yourself with. Not fun.

Any 2D Mario Platformer - They seem to copy and paste the games over and over, and just move things around a bit. Same story. Same worlds. Repeated bosses. I just find them so bland.

That'll do for now. This is an interesting thread.
