This entertaining http://games.ign.com/articles/121/1218964p2.html article from IGN shows just how unrealistic all the war-based FPS games are. It also made me wonder, why haven't they made a war game with an actual character development. I mean, really: start the game with "normal life", or something what makes you really connect to the characters, and only after that bring on the action. You have to care about your partners, in a similar way you cared when Aeris died in FF VII. Why is it so hard to make the characters to seem like real humans? They have done it in movies for a century (and in many games too, but not FPS games). Maybe the Japanese should make the next war-based FPS?
That was interesting. I've actually been wondering about that recently. It would make a lot of sense to have character development. As the article stated, the soldiers in plenty of FPSs are depicted as mindless gung-ho people.
Most games of the type set out to be high octane action titles, which doesn't really leave a lot of room to completely humanize the characters. I admit I would like to see someone really try and flesh out the characters in between the fighting but that would take just the right touch to make it work.
Regarding Aeris though, I actually cheered her death. I found her the least likeable character of the entire game and her dying was a relief to me.

It's fitting that this is the same problem with most war-based movies, since that's what the people are so pathetically desperately are trying to make, but in video game form.
Empathising as a soldier in a real-time war would probably be on of the biggest weaknesses you could ever have. I suppose that's why character development isn't really explored in-depth.
I would hope that a realistic war FPS would sicken people and make them realise that headshots aren't much fun in real life.
I agree, plus it should cost £1000 and perminantly break if you get killed to make people actually think & fear the value of human life before shooting.
Slightly cheap but morally refreshing point aside, developers KNOW they wouldn't sell that many copies of an FPS that actually takes time to give the characters a proper backstory & character development. Look at games like Metal Gear Solid where the main criticism of the game by it's audience is it's movie scenes! Without them it would be stealth-shoot, stealth-shoot. FPSs have simply become big, spangly, graphics heavy playgrounds for people to kill as many faceless (metaphorically) soldiers in as many humerous ways as possible.
Take games like Modern Warfare for example, instead of spending more time working on character development or decent plotting they decided to have big flashy effects and enemies from unnamed counties. Beats a reskinning I guess. Please watch this for my opinion on FPSs. http://youtu.be/xnZ-5DZhySg

Umm, has you ever played Half-life? Or Portal? Good games with excellent character development.
The most realistic FPS I've ever played was insurgency. Basically, you get shot like once or twice and you die. Only multiplayer though.
Realistic FPS's do exist, but only on the PC where they belong.
I must admit Tare, no. And I'm definitely not speaking as an expert with my comments... walking forward & shooting has never appealed to me no matter what colour the terrorists/aliens/innocent bystanders are. That includes Halo... was made to play a lot of that & it's just COD with helmets and jump packs. (yes, that was deliberately provocative... but hey, it brightens up my day).
I have heard of Half Life & Portal as I've been in the gaming community for many years, but while they stand out as good examples of their genre - they are also rarities. Infact Portal 2 does a lot to undo the good work of it's first game from the little I've played. For a funny review of Portal 2 in an accent almost identical to mine please watch this: http://youtu.be/qvhjczPD1DA
