I like realistic graphics in games like Cities: Skylines and Microsoft Flight Simulator, but when it comes to adventures and RPGs I much prefer the stylized look of say Breath of the Wild and Dragon Quest XI over the realism in Horizon Forbidden West.
That'd be good, although I only got any of their games after all the episodes were out, previously, @Pizzamorg .... I'll largely agree about too many military shooting games looking the same, as well! I think most of the people who do play those have a favourite franchise they get, though. I doubt anyone would be buying all the ones that come out
That is the obvious downside for so many games going for ultra-realistic graphics, though, especially when they are supposed to be in our actual world & that's presumably a reason some go for sci-fi & fantasy, so they have more options
8k is pointless. The human eye can’t even tell the difference between that and 4K. unless you have your face inches from the tv. It is just a way to jack up the price of consoles with a useless feature. But people will not care because it sounds like such a big leap.
This is true but there's also more to higher specs than higher resolutions and framerates. It certainly comes with the territory but it's not the only thing by any stretch. I mean resolution and framerate matter to a point but beyond a certain point there are details that have a much higher impact. I'd take a max setting 1080p/60 with HDR over a medium setting 4K/60 without.
I will say that real time raytracing is and has always been the holy grail of rendering. It's not a recent thing at all. I believe Cars was the first Pixar movie to be rendered entirely using raytracing but if memory serves they were using raytracing in occasional scenes well before then. The problem with the marketing of raytracing though is that game developers have become VERY good at cheating with lighting. So the gap between raster and raytracing doesn't quite seem as big as it probably should do. If you can do raytracing you get high quality shadows, reflections and ambient lighting for free
But yeah, I'd say stable framerates with raytracing is probably the next major milestone to reach. So it was 720/60, 1080/60, 4K/60, 4K/60 with raytracing, 4K/120 with raytracing and VRR and THEN we'll be wasting effort in going for 8K. Consoles are currently sitting around the 4K/60 space. The Switch is just reaching 1080/60. There's still room to improve here
I kinda just had a thought, Like what if nintendo is staying behind, so whenever sony and Xbox reach a point, nintendo will just jump to the thing before.
What if after the ps5 and X, then nintendo might reach ps4. Idk thats pretty stupid to guess.
But when @skywake said there is a lot of room to improve, it made me think.

If you want your mind blown, this was the first ray traced videos. And even back then this technique gives you pretty impressive results purely by the way it's being rendered https://archive.org/details/thecompleatangler1978
I'm sure it would've taken a long while to render in 1978. Like in the order of days per frame. Fairly sure I rendered out something similar when I was doing that intro to CG course back when I was at UNI and even then it was minutes per frame not frames per second. We've come a long way.
I don’t like the anju and Kafei side quest from majoras mask. I am not invested in the story( for the quest not the game) and every task feels like a fetch quest.

Oh boy. A good amount of opinions I have are unpopular but here’s the one that will get me burned at the stake. I really like playing mobile game and Gacha games....I’m dead am I?
@Greatluigi No your not dead. The only reason I dislike a lot of mobile games is because, well, they suck and there meant to be a cash grab, so there is no real game.
But if the game is good on the other hand, Like Genshin impact, or pokemon unite, Wild rift. Mobile games like that are fine as they try to be games.

@Greatluigi, I'll admit I play an unhealthy amount of Senran Kagura: New Link, though I haven't spent a cent on it.
Luckily, I believe it only has a Japanese server, and since Japan spends much more on mobile gaming in general it's easier to play for free since the devs are more willing to give out freebies.

@Greatluigi I think my problem with mobile games today is how riddled with microtransactions they are. It never feels like I'm playing a full game. If mobile games had just a one-time purchase fee, I would be much more accepting of them.

@VoidofLight Yeah, I always hit a wall with almost every mobile game I play where I'm just like, "Eh, I think I'm done." Usually because of a microtransaction wall or an incredibly high leveling system.
