If Sticker Star never happened Color Splash would be looked at as a solid game in the paper Mario series.
I think all three latter Paper Mario games would be better received if the other 2 didn't exist tbh. (well ok, I could see lowered expectations from the last two games making some people appreciate Origami King more)
I can say this as someone who both didn't entirely hate Sticker Star for what it was and stopped getting annoyed at Other M the moment the series as people wanted it to be was confirmed to not be dead. Now Other M is just a funny experiment.
If Sticker Star never happened Color Splash would be looked at as a solid game in the paper Mario series.
I actually agree with this, because we got a game before with a system a majority of people hated, it definitely didn’t help the other. A lot of the people I see that enjoyed color splash never played sticker star, and I gotta be honest, I would also hate the 2nd eatery if I didn’t enjoy a system before or got tired of it.
Nintendo are like woman, You love them for whats on the inside, not the outside…you know what I mean! Luzlane best girl!

My main gripe with Sticker Star was always the rather thin story, and Color Splash was a vast improvement on that score.
The sticker combat system was a bit slow and I'm not sad to see the back of it, but it hardly rendered either game unplayable. They're both relatively light on the RPG elements with barely any grinding required.
I can't speak for Color Splash or The Origami King, but personally I think Sticker Star deserves all the hate that it gets, and is probably the single most disappointing Nintendo game I've ever played.
The problem is that the battle system relies so heavily on one-use limited resources (the stickers) that battling is ultimately discouraged. Why would I play a game where I'm essentially punished for playing it more? This is especially counter to most RPGs where battling is encouraged to level up your party.
This one factor absolutely destroys the gameplay loop and, regardless of anything else the game was trying to do, makes it utterly unplayable for me.
Sticker Star was awful. I generally finish all of my games, even the ones I'm a bit iffy on, but I stopped playing SS after a few hours and listed it on Ebay the next day. That's how much I disliked it.
Here's my own unpopular opinion, though: The Origami King is one of the best games in the series. Second only to TTYD for me, because I preferred that game's sharper sense of humor, but in certain respects (music and level design, especially), TOK even shows it up.
Is it an RPG? No. And that's fine. People enjoy games all the time that don't reward you with exp for combat, and I don't hear people saying battles in those games are "pointless." Anyway, the game does a good job of making you feel stronger through the purchasing of stronger attacks with money, which you primarily get from battles. So the structure of engaging in turn-based battles to get stronger is still maintained in the end.
There's a lack of new species, but, honestly, after Super Paper Mario, IS needed to be reigned in a bit. And, I'll just say it: I think the core cast worked out well (Bobby was memorable, for example, and I reject the notion that he's less of an 'original character' just because they didn't slap a hat or moustache on him), and the game did a good job of utilizing the core set of characters throughout the story.
The story itself? Well-paced, and actually shockingly emotional throughout. Probably the closest a Nintendo game has come to making me cry since Super Mario Galaxy.

Sticker star is funnily enough one of those games I never hated as much as everyone else… purely because it was my first paper mario game and I was young with a lot of free time. I enjoyed just walking around the world but nowadays, I know I could never bring myself to replay it. Besides that, I know I’d probably dislike it significantly more today, because I got pretty irritated with color splash’s combat quirks at times, even though I also finished that one and the exploration was great. Origami king was really good, I had an absolute blast with that one. I’m still planning to go back to the OGs, 64 and thousand-year-door but they didn’t really immediately grab me at all, so I’m just waiting for the right mood to strike me to get through them. Same with Super, I’ve tried to avoid spoilers for that story for years because I want to find out how it ends for myself, since I heard that one’s plot is really good.
I keep buying fighting games for some reason, even though I barely got anyone to play against.

I actually agree on Origami King being the best. And while the battle system isn’t as good as the original games, I do think the boss battles are the best in the series. The lack of XP is also kind of good. In the earlier games combat becomes annoying at the end, but you can’t avoid it because you will be under leveled. In Origami King, if I didn’t want to battle then I didn’t battle. Plus solving the puzzles felt more rewarding than spamming power jump in every battle.
on the note of original characters, I don’t think the fan base will ever be satisfied. Take professor toad for example. Unique outfit and personality, but fans will still say he is just a normal toad. Then they will point to a random green toad with hair braids as a completely original character and the peak of character design.

People had a point with the lack of original characters in Sticker Star, because Sticker Star was totally devoid of personality. But the NPCs and partners in TOK are bursting with personality. That's more important to me than a character wearing a funny hat.
I... understand why people would have issues with the battle system, but I actually liked it. A lot more thought went into battles. It wasn't just spamming jump and hammer attacks endlessly like in the older games.
The boss fights are pretty cool mechanically, although I understand why people have issues with them being arts & crafts tools. The original character bosses in the older games were more interesting. But they serve their purpose well enough.
Where TOK really shines over previous entries for me is in the level design. Environments are so much more interesting and dense in this, especially compared to the hallway-like overworld sections in TTYD. The music is superb as well. The narrative elements are surprisingly strong. And, of course, it goes without saying that the presentation is phenomenal.

There are some things that bother me about new Paper Mario on a basic level of personal enjoyment, but stuff like creative character designs just comes across as some sort of failing of development time, or creative license or possibly corporate approved something something. It's just weird, why would I not want more variety in appearances and names for characters? No one on Earth actively wants that.
I'm still considering getting Origami King myself at some point. It's very rare I actively disagree on a well liked enough game, especially from Nintendo, so I'd presumably like it. Perhaps a lot! But the entire Paper Mario saga has just worn me down and doing a better version of Sticker Star, no matter how much better, just feels like too little too late for me. I don't wanna buy a full priced game if stuff unrelated to it is gonna make me more negative towards it.
@Ralizah
I prefer Sticker Star over than Origami King in term of gameplay.
I still like the 3D stickers summon in Sticker Star like Final Fantasy Eidolon.
I didn't mind sticker star at all, but its probably my least favorite of the PM series. I'm not all that crazy about the M&L series though. That's my unpopular opinion.
@HotGoomba
I honestly felt that way about the opening of paper Mario 64. I was bored and it felt like a waste of time, so I put it down. Recently I tried the game again and once I got past the opening I discovered that it was an amazing game with a ton to offer.
Basically what I am trying to say is that judging a game by a slow opening isn’t a good idea, and can often cost people amazing experiences.

@Grumblevolcano Saying that Super Circuit controls better than Super Mario Kart is like saying that stepping on a pin is less painful than stepping on a nail.
