Did a few quick rounds of ranked City Trial. It's even more fun in the full game with all the extra vehicles, powers, items, events, etc. that were absent from the test ride.
@BenAV I have a question about the Road Trip mode
So the impression I got from watching the second direct is that this mode was going to be a roguelike mode, where you go through a few level that each have a few challenges, then there is a boss at the end, you can finish it in an hour or so and it's random every time
But the reviews made it seem like a story mode separated into chapters with no random elements but with some choices you can make that change your ending and that it takes at least a few hours to finish
So how exactly does it work?
@Sylamp As you go through each chapter you're always offered three choices been stages/rewards which I assume are randomised so it does have some roguelite elements (Edit: started my second run and they're actually not random) but aside from that it's more of a story mode overall. It's much longer than a typically roguelite run would be and if you fail a stage you're able to try it again as many times as you like at the cost of a bit of currency so it doesn't have that danger element that you get in a roguelite of having to start over if you lose. I'm not sure what happens if you ever get completely stuck on a stage though as I didn't encounter that.
Spoilers on what happens after beating it:You unlock New Game+ which lets you start over with all the vehicles you already collected on the previous run. Seems you need to collect them all to get the true ending but I haven't done it yet.
Overall it feels like a mode that I might play through a few times to fully clear the checklist but probably won't have much of a reason to return to it after that.
@FishyS The playtime on my save at the end of my first playthrough says 1:57 but I don't know exactly what counts towards that (probably just time in stages I guess) as I feel like my overall time in the mode was probably at least double that.
Hmm... 2 hours... idk if that makes me want to replay it more or not but the stuff not being randomized takes it down a bit. Can I use any character? I know the machines are tied as like "lives" like when one gets destroyed. Well at least the choices you pick can be different so there's that.
@KaiserGX You can choose any character you have unlocked at the start of the run. Don't think there's a way to change mid-way. You don't actually lose machines when you lose or anything. Once you find one you've got it for good and after each rest area or when you lose and retry you can pick between all the machines you have.
And while the stages aren't randomised, there are at least quite a lot of split paths so you won't just be doing the same ones over and over. There is only so much variety with the different challenges though so a lot of them will feel similar regardless.
Finished Road Trip on Super Hard difficulty. Just a few minutes off finishing it on launch day haha. Highly enjoyed that. I'll go back to clear the two last checklist panels that I missed and then I can focus on playing online.
@squiddu-real I agree that Hard didn't really feel that hard. Super Hard unlocks after you beat it the first time though and felt like a decent enough challenge for me.
@KaiserGX I dunno about more rewards. I just chose the highest because I figured challenging myself if the best way to get better at the game, but it wasn't too bad. You can freely change the difficulty at any time if you need to (except for Super Hard which you're stuck with for the whole run if you pick it, but it's not available for the first playthrough).
Tested out getting some of the online checklist boxes done in a paddock against only CPUs and it works so that's nice. The team relay ones in particular I'm glad I don't need to actually find people to play with to complete.
For me they pulled off something that's very hard to do in a competitive multiplayer game in making a game that's always just really fun regardless of how well I'm doing.
@BenAV Yeah, ive lost nearly every online race ive played so far but they were still so fun. I'm really happy cause I personally didnt care for Mario Kart and I thought CrossWorlds was just ok so getting a racing game i can actually really get into on this console is nice. Other than Yakuza 0 this is really the first switch 2 game im gonna really get into
@Blooper987 Yeah I'm with you there. I put a lot of time into Mario Kart World and tried my best to like it but I actually really hate that game. Would take all my time back if I could. Never even tried the demo for CrossWorlds, just looked very meh to me. This game though is one that I'm going to keep coming back to for a long time as long as I can actually still find opponents.
@scoobdoo It's a very unique game so I couldn't tell you whether you'd like it or not but for me it's honestly been like a real breath of fresh air after Mario Kart from a design perspective.
Gameplay is really fun and I can actually just play the game how I want to online without having to jump through hoops and use Discord servers and whatever. Lots of settings that can be adjusted, lots of customisation, lots of objectives to complete. All the stuff that felt like it was absent from Mario Kart is here.
I like Kirby Air Riders. Road Trip is a nice mode and it is fun to collect stuff and to overcome challenges. The normal difficulty is just right so far. Nice sound and a beautiful scenery.
