"Music shouldn't be free. It shouldn't even be cheap. If you consume all the music you want all the time, compulsively, sweatily, you end up having a cheap relationship to the music you do listen to. In turn, this kind of market makes for musicians who are writing with the burden of having to get your attention, instead of writing whatever they’d write if they were just following artistic impulses. It's increasingly difficult and un-rewarding to write music that is considered, patient, and simple when the market increasingly demands music that is easy, thoughtless, and careless." - Lower Dens's Jana Hunter on Spotify.

Can't say I fully agree with that statement, but I feel that summarizes what a lot of people are feeling about modern (especially popular) music.

Exactly.

I love Taylor Swift, She's the only one who understands my tortured teenage young adult soul! Yes a majority of her music is about relationships, but it's what she knows best, and it gives her songs real meaning.

Like others have said, there is all kinds of great music out there, you just have to keep your ears open.

I like Taylor Swift as well. She is very talented in her song writing and is a good guitar player. (Also, she's quite the cutie! )

Then there are songs that ARE good but are just so misunderstood. Gaga prime example. Seriously, it saddens me how many people hate Judas just because they think it's offense. It's a metaphor and a dang good one that makes sense and holds a valid point. Plus fun beat.

I think that might be one of the few Gaga songs I like, though I'd have to check. Really, I'm more offended by stuff like Monster, Bad Romance, and Poker Face...

EDIT: I didn't even get to the actual lyrics. That was the worst Gaga song I've heard yet, at least for reasons outside the lyrics. I hated the overbearing beat and vocals.

Marry The Night, however, is pretty alright, surprisingly enough.

Meh, I like it.
Marry the Night is good though. How does Poker Face come off as offensive to you btw?

Actually, in that case it's just insulting my intelligence. The whole song seems to be just thinly veiled innuendos. Course, I could never finish the song, so maybe I'm wrong.

Yeah I'm not a fan of it either. It gets grating after a while.

Jesus is the only way.

I don't think this is a new problem. Ever since "Top X" charts have been around (and probably before that) there have been people making music simply to sell records. Perhaps the only thing that's different is that it's now down to a science, but music written specifically to sell records has been around for a long, long time.

It doesn't mean that there is less 'meaningful' music around - I'd argue that, in the era of home recording and digital distribution, it's easier to find than ever. I think you're just looking in the wrong places.

Also, I didn't mean that pop music is worthless. Far from it.

Personally, I think "Call me Maybe" is one of the most incredibly catchy songs I've heard in my life. I could listen to it for hours. It makes me happy, and that means it's worth a lot to me.

EDIT: I must admit, I went through a stage in my late teens/early twenties where I basically dismissed any "popular" songs as not meaning anything and, basically, being complete crap. As I got older, I realised that, firstly, that opinion was wrong, and even so its simple existence doesn't affect me.

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

The music of today is fine, there's a lot of bands out there with talent. Its the popularized music on the radio that I feel isn't as good as it used to be. For a lot of artists nowadays, it isn't about the music or the soul, its all about making a quick beat for the money. I believe many of the popular songs are strictly geared towards being a hit song and nothing else.

That's why I mostly listen to 80s music. I'm 16.

I lie. "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" is the only Carpenters Song I really like, but I do find myself more drawn to older music than what tends to get airplay on the radio (especially in the UK).

Maybe I should listen to more modern music.

After your last post, I immediately drew that up on Youtube. Haha.

I bought fun.'s album a bit ago. It's honestly one of the only albums I've bought since American Idiot. Really good stuff, even if the hip-hop-like production goes overboard towards the end. Also it reminds me of Queen, and anything that reminds me of Queen is doing something incredibly right.

Also listening to a lot of Kimbra' music. She's y'know, that girl in Somebody That I Used to Know (Gotye's other songs are really good too, even if his singing can get a bit grating for me). But Kimbra's stuff is...I guess "if Katy Perry was really talented and awesome". Or so I've heard others describe her as. Her stuff is very retro sounding while still sounding new and creative.
