Topic: Thinking of getting a PS3

My dad sat down with me, looks like I am going to be working with him in some father, son trucker shipment business. Mean's I am getting some cash. I am not tired/bored of the Wii at all. Just lately I been really getting into Final Fantasy and I would like to get all the PSN classics. Maybe try out the PS2 FF's and PS3. Though there's also the Xbox route.

Do you have to pay for online? Anything I should know? Should I get a 360 instead? Discuss.

PS3 easily. I have a 360 but I honestly can't tell you how it's better than PS3 in pretty much any way (outside of the PS3 version of the Orange Box being awful).

The recent Final Fantasies, at best, are not as good as the older ones you can get for much cheaper but do whatever I guess.

Also, get the first Assassin's Creed if you can get it relatively cheap and if you like it at all, the sequels are some of the best next gen games around.

PSN has an optional paying service thing. $50 a year and you get nifty benefits. Go check out their website (playstation.com) and find out stuff for yourself directly from them and make a decision based on that.

Personally, even though I don't have a PS3, I would choose it over the 360 because of the games that caters to my interest more than the X360. Little Big Planet and Ratchet & Clank are my favorites and should be looked into if you love platformers. PS3 has a much broader appeal than the 360 at first look.

360 does have great games and a much broader selection of games but you really have to look for them.

It comes with composite. You're going to have to buy component or HDMI cables separately. Best bet is to look at Best Buy for prices or any where else. I'd say go with Amazon if you're able to order online. They usually have the best deals on stuff.

Speaking as an owner of a 360 and a wii, with a few friends that are PS3 enthusiasts, go with the PS3 if you want JRPGs/hack&slash and 360 if you want a vast variety of first person shooters. coming from the wii you'll be very impressed with graphics either way. They both have very good online networks. Xboxlive costs $8 a month or $50 a year or $30 a year if you wait for one of their online sales. If you don't want to pay that then you still get voice chat and access to the marketplace. As a sidenote: the 360 doesn't have wifi out of the box unless it's a slim; if it's not a slim you'll have to pay $75 to $100 to use wifi. PSN has the same offerrings for free or PSN+ for a monthly fee which gives a few free games and exclusive DLC and demos. From what I've heard from gamestop employees who've spent extensive time with each-xbox live has a lot more players with more variety in online experiences from having an extra generation of various online games. Both companies' games will cost you an extra $10 for the first few months after release from wii prices. Those are the basic differences between the consoles. That being said, I would definately look at the game libraries. There are a lot of great games that are for either console that weren't on the wii. I would watch E3 in two weeks to see which one has a better winter lineup. hope this helps!

Personally I went with an Xbox instead of the PS3 cause all the games I wanted to play were available on both systems but the Xbox was cheaper. It all depends on several factors if the games you want to play are PS exclusives and you need/want a Blu-ray player that go with the PS3 if not go with the Xbox.

also if you value your personal info stay away from PS3

You have a better chance of dying in a plane accident than being one of the people who lost their details to that hack.

I know you jest. But let's try and not scare the dude into thinking the PSN hack was a free for all.

Can it still play PS2 titles? I'm mostly interested in the PSOne classics since I missed out and nothing on the original Xbox grabbed my attention. BTW What games ARE exclusive to Xbox?

Kinda the only way you can play PS2 games is if you download them form the PSN. No current PS3 is backwards compatible anymore.

@KaiserGX - You'll have many hours of PS1 classics ahead of you if you choose to go that route. A sizeable majority of Squaresoft's PS1 lineup is available now totalling hours of enjoyable catch-up gaming. I say go for it--300ish dollars well-spent. I don't own a 360, but there weren't a lot of checks in that collumn outside of Xbox Live Indie Games and their shoot-em-up library, hence the decision to go the PS3 route. Also owned PS1 and PS2 and had great experiences with both.

Keep in mind, you won't be able to play the PS2 Final Fantasy games on a PS3--no PS2 backwards compatibility, short of getting a really old model before they discontinued it.

And yeah--internet's free and in no notable way worse-off than 360's pay service. I've heard some nonsense about XBL being able to host parties (whatever that means) and that it allows for cross-game chat. Outside of these factors and claims that online gaming/matching is faster (which has never been an issue for me on PS3), I don't see any difference. And yeah--HDMI cables are no more than 10 bucks.

If you want Final Fantasy, grab yourself a PS2 (Because good luck on finding a complete PS3, and by complete, I mean one with backwards compatibility).
You'll have access to all the PSX and PS2 Final Fantasy games. Plus you'll have access to the largest library of games for a console (Excluding a complete PS3, of course)

You know what. I just woke up now and looked at that Zelda 3D trailer. I am starting to change my mind now. I think I rather invest the money into the Cafe or what ever the heck the next console will be. My sister has a PS2 in the next room.

Or what else... is a PSP a cheaper option? You can play it on tv can't you? And also able to access the PSone games?

Actually, iirc you can. And the PSP 3000 and Go models can use Dualshock 3 controllers.

Wait what? I didn't know I could play my PSPGo with a Dualshock. I also didn't think it could work on TV.

It is, however, an awesome console. I actually have two. There's a lot of good games on it, especially if you're into RPGs, and yes, it plays PSone classics, and PSN Minis (which leaves DSiWare for dead, imo)

I was asking the same question in the forums the other day; my conclusion was to buy a 360, from all the views I heard. Especially since the 360 gets most of the best games in multi-platform versions, it's a nice choice. But here's something; I dropped the 360 (for now) when I heard the Cafe had been announced. Either I'd buy a 360 this year, then quickly save for the Cafe against next year, or just get the Cafe next year and forget about everything else. But it really depends on what games you want, this is just my personal opinion.

It is your choice anyhow. I know nothing about PS Classics by the way, I focus on main gaming. So consider more stuff before deciding, and for flip's sake, definitely watch E3 before you choose too.

I dislike both but my vote goes to PS3. Its library appears a bit more varied than the very bland, same-ish looking library on 360. I Don't really touch either but my 360 gets a lot less attention than my PS3. I try to give the 360 a chance every 6 months or so but the games just look so....meh to me. I have never bought a PS3 game because there is always something more important to buy in the world of Nintendo but when I get free Little Big Planet when the store is finally put back online, I'll probably give the poor thing a bit more attention. Oh, and the multimedia options on the PS3 also strike me as nicer than the 360. Its just much easier to navigate and more user friendly overall. Still not a fan though

I would not go with a PSP. It's name says it all-it's a portable watered down playstation, with hardly any decent games, lack of imagination, and ports. Nintendo knows to diversify their portables from their consoles but Sony just makes the same thing on the go.

Well, although I do prefer the DS for obvious reasons, the PSP has a handful of good hits. But seriously, go with a PS3 over a PSP (even though their different in that one's a home console and the other is a handheld).
