I don't write so much as much as I think about them and maybe plot them out, then sigh as I finally start writing and realize I didn't plan them out as well as I'd hoped. I do have one story I might talk about, but only I've fleshed it out a bit.

@ClockworkMario This is my opinion, but the first story sounds like it would better fit a short story format, as anything longer might end up a little long winded and off topic. The second story is very interesting and maybe something you could think about is how Mike would obtain his freedom. Would it be by getting rid of The Writer? Working with them? I hope this helps!

I've been working on a short story ever since I saw this thread and I've never had written anything outside of essays or thesis papers. This should be fun but right now, I'll share a haiku I just made up on the spot...

First of all, thanks for the tips! Yeah, short stories are what I have in mind for both of them. And you're right I need to ponder about that part on story #2.

Currently on the plate:

Chivalry
Super Mario 3D World – Finishing the last few levels.

And once again I've written absolutely nothing since that first chapter. Though I'll be on the computer today instead of the Wii U browser (which is what I use for internet 99% of the time) for once so maybe something will happen.

Oh! Thanks for digging this out, @GuardianKing! ...I actually had something I wanted to post here:
Story
This is the result of me sitting by myself with a word processor for about an hour or so.
It has no title yet, so it's just called "Story" for now.
And it's been pretty fun, 'cause I have no idea where the character is, or anything... I'm figuring it out along with him!

Would anyone be interested in a series of short writing challenges? I'll provide a theme and give maybe a fortnight's turnover to see what people make of it? I remember back in high school we'd have a lot of trouble starting our creative assignments so we started challenging each other with silly ideas. It'd be cool if we could run one of those here, if there are enough people interested

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

I've finally come up with a decent story (as in it wouldn't work very well as a video game story ) It was the result of me trying to think up a good concept for anime/manga (trying to push my friend into drawing some original characters, so I pitch these ideas at him and see if we can do something with them) and ended up fairly decent. It's somewhat derivative of Ender's Game (the book, haven't seen the movie), but I've put my own spin on it (it's a school drama with a focus on horror and thriller elements). I know it probably sounds horrible, but it's actually decent.

RIIISSEEE FROM YOUR GRAVE, THREAD!!!

Anyway, I wrote a short story about a man and a woman desperately trying to survive after their plane crash landed on the side of an enormous mountain. Or that's the framework; the real meat of the story is two dialogs about life they discourse whilst seeking shelter on a small cave.

I'm rather happy about how it turned out. Perhaps I ought to translate it to English someday (I wrote it in my native language, Finnish), since I'm pretty interested in translating.

I listened to some post rock and tried writing a poem to describe what I felt like afterwards.

sorry in advance for being depressing.

@Gioku Just read your Kirby comic. Bahaha, that's good stuff! Too bad Nintendo would C&D you into oblivion for it if you ran with it because they're hilarious like that.

(Total O2 fangirl right here, btw).

Do you have a webcomic?

@JollyKarp Not that I don't TOTALLY AGREE that we're doomed and all that, but I'd be totally into this if you wrote a poem with the same language except not about this.

See you've got lines like:

"radiates with explosions from the submatomic"

Now THAT'S how you break a line...except I was kinda let down that it was one of those "riddle" poems where you have to guess what it's about (or maybe I'm just THAT dense and didn't get it until the end).

Do you read a lot of poetry? If you do, I'd suggest you treat yourself to some John Smith (heh, GOOD LUCK FINDING HIM IN A SEARCH THOUGH). He uses scientific language in his poetry and it's good stuff. (For ease of search, start with "Fireflies in the Magnolia Grove" if you think this would be your thing).

FULL DISCLOSURE: He used to live across from me. He is/was a very nice old man. Drinks a lot of tea. Yep.

Neat thread. I'm digging some of the stuff I've read.

I like to write too. But for the last like six months I haven't been able to pull anything together. I can come up with little segments I would want to see in the story, but I can't write the story. How do you guys overcome writer's block?

Gamecubed

World

@Gamecubed Well, I kinda don't believe in "writer's block." The best advice I was ever given was that what we call writer's block is actually reader's block. So basically if you're stuck on a plot issue, it could be that it's time to put the manuscript away and read someone else's book (preferably something in the same genre as yours, and written in the past five years).

@World Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I'm not actually too big on science, I just felt like trying it out for a bit. It's all I remember from high school atomic theory. The whole thing was written in about 15 minutes maybe? It's not a "riddle poem" so to speak, it was just a melancholic reflection on endings in general. It's a lot like the post rock song I was listening to, which conveys a story or an emotion through musical swells and sound bites rather than lyrics, so you never get a complete, defined picture.

I've been reading a lot of Raymond Carver lately, and he does a very stream of consciousness style that I tried to mimic in the second half. Hopefully I get the chance to write something about more optimistic topics then.

Blah, I started a story at the end of last month...I should look over my notes and get back to it soon. Right when I started, work and SMT got their claws into me.
