A lot of Obi Wan feels off to me @blindsquarel. I guess the idea is to sort of downscale the power levels of everyone involved, to bring it more in line with a New Hope, but I feel like we've been conditioned for so many years now to expect superpowered force users that this just all feels a little naff by comparison. There are so many times when people just don't use the force at all, when things could have been solved so easily had they. I get that Obi-Wan has PTSD or whatever so it's blocking him or whatever the excuse is, but what about the Inquisitors? It is the same with the choreography, too. In the third episode, I thought it was spot on when Vader and Obi-Wan collided, but in every other episode everyone feels so slow and clunky. Again, Obi-Wan is old etc etc that is their limiter excuse, but the Inquisitors have no such narrative protection.

Life to the living, death to the dead.

Finished up season 2 of the Man in the High Castle this morning, & I thought it was even better than the first. I do hope they eventually explain the mechanics behind traversing realities, but otherwise things are really starting to get going.

I just finished season 4 episode 4 of Stranger Things. I've binged it this week. I'm going to be bummed when it's over.

I like Stranger Things but after season 1 they decided to double down on it being about the kids however I always liked it as it was a Stephen King-esque story being competently told for a change. There's some legit great films/shows of his work but christ I don't think there's another writer who's had so many bad adaptations of their work done before.

@Kermit1 Reading is boring, just watch this to figure out what's being talked about.

@Rambler The Sex Pistols was before I was born (I did seem them play at their reunion show in the 00s though) so even though I appreciate them and I know the key points of their story alot of details are new to me. Steve Jones rather than Johnny Rotten or Malcolm McLaren is the main character as it's based on his book, even the most die hard Sex Pistols fans have to admit Rotten is too much of a silly billy to make him the protagonist and not have people turn it off because of how much of an annoying twerp he is.

Malcolm is as sleazy and manipulative as you would expect, even when he is being nice you still hate him with the kid from Love Actually doing a great job of playing him. Vivian is more of a smaller supporting character but there's a really good scene of her making Nazi shirts and explaining to her kids why punks wear them and the punk attitude in general. Jordan is played by Massie Williams and she is really game for it with her costumes, some of them destroys her little sister image. The handling of Nancy's murder is abit vague which I suppose it more accurate than the Sid & Nancy movie since no one does know.

@Rambler Yeah, my take on Rotten is even though he is a silly billy that doesn't automatically stop him from being right about what he's saying as he is a smart guy although his recent turn as a MAGA supporter has made him too right. Yay, pun!

Public Image Ltd are decent, Rise in particular is a banger! I've seen them a couple of time but the last time was at a festival 3ish years ago and he was shockingly bad which was a shame as the were good live when I first saw them .

For Stranger Things, ummm, perhaps a 9/10? It does plenty of things really great, some things exceptional. It's not perfect, but there's such a unique flavor to it, I'd say it's a must watch.

@WoomyNNYes I actually found it the opposite, rather than being an unique show it's very derivate of 80s horror and more specicilly Stephen King's work which I thought was an intentional homage. Not that I'm saying that's a bad thing as there's a love for Stephen King that comes with it.

I'm more surprised it hasn't jump started Stranger Things fans interest in the various adapations of his work as IT, Christine, Firestarter, Carrie, Needful Things, The Body etc all come to mind when watching the show.

I think I will stick to rock & roll, and select pop music, punk ain't for me.

@Rambler I was just asking how much he liked the shoe on a scale of 1 to 10, I'm probably never going to watch it, and my Netflix account is still broken, it probably won't get fixed anytime soon.

This year barely has anything "new" I really want to see. I'm currently watching Obi-Wan and as it goes on I'm starting to really dislike it. I watched the first episode of Ms. Marvel, I feel that dreaded superhero fatigue now. With everything coming out so fast and so often, I feel tired and upset.

Well on a lighter note I'm gonna go listen to Madness and other ska music. (not live or anything like that)

@Kermit1 Punk IS rock n' roll. It's just another sub-genre to it. Try the other direction of it, The Sex Pistols were the anarchist/nihilist side of punk rock but on the other side you had the idealists like The Clash, Billy Bragg or Patti Smith. The Clash were/are the best punk band of all time imho.

Also oddly enough my two favourite contemporary punks acts are both called Frank who went solo after they quit their original hardcore punk bands who are as different to each other as The Clash and Sex Pistols were.

I was at the gig this was filmed at.

@jump Oh yeah, I forgot that fact again! still not really my thing, but I see how people can like it

sub-genres make my head spin with how deep they go

edit Paul McCartney had a punk phase... I just remembered that

I've just finished up Our Flag Means Death and it was alot better than what I was expecting. it's a silly sitcom about bumbling pirates with Taika Waititi in it so I was expecting the usual oddball humour you'd expect from Taika but around midway through the show it actually becomes a really tender love story I got invested in.

Also Spud from Trainspotting is in it! I've got no idea why but it's always nice to see him pop up in a show/movie every now and then rather than being a forgotten unemployed actor.

Finished up Wanna be the Strongest in the World! the other night. If that name makes it seem like an anime, it's because it is. J-Pop idol Sakura Hagiwara decides she's going to join the pro wrestling circuit & beat them at their own game after her group is humiliated during a cross promotional event.

Doesn't have that big a budget as it's primarily a fan service show (the premise gives the animators ample excuse for crotch or butt closeups, plus the after match showers), but it actually kinda works. They manage to get by effectively with a lot of relatively static action involving submission holds (I exaggerate, but it seems like someone's in a Boston Crab for 50% of the show's runtime). It helps that it's actually pretty well paced for the first half (she really struggles to make it & doesn't get her first win until the show's half done), though it gets overstuffed in the latter half as she immediately gets the attention of the world champ, gets her own protege (in a storyline that doesn't really go anywhere), and is menaced by a mystery assailant. That said, it actually manages to end in a pretty good place.

I've been catching up on The Orville these last couple of weeks.

I used to be a big Star Trek fan but Discovery was such a let down I stopped watching after a couple of episodes. Discovery ain't Star Trek. I kept hearing that The Orville was a much better show but I didn't have acces to it, until it dropped on Disney+.

And oh my gosh, I'm in love with this show. I saw the first episode of season 3 today and it hit me like a brick. I started crying and needed to pause for a minute. When you're that attached to its characters, you know you're watching a great show.

@Tremblucay I’m watching The Orville but groaning about it at the same time. It feels a tad too derivative of 90s/classic Trek rather than its own thing which works well enough to keep me watching rather than loving it. But Jebus H Cross I can’t stand it’s humour!

I really like Discovery myself. Every episode is me just going damn, Sonequa Martin Green can act.

It's all subjective of course, but I love Orville's humor. You're correct though that it takes a LOT of inspiration from Star Trek. Maybe a bit too much. But I don't really mind. I love its episodic structure, I love the characters and I love the stories they tell.

Star Trek used to be a show that held a mirror to our own world. Without being too explicit, they showed us what we're capable of, the good and the bad. The Orville does this really well and that's what I missed with Discovery.
