Ya, we've had this same MM4/MM5 discussion before, yet I'm just suprised how people went crazy and took notice on NL when MM4 was released on the VC, then comes MM5....And there's still no Nintendo Life review and Nobody, zilch, nadahh, no one is talking about it.lol What the flipping frig bud!?

It was announced, nobody said anything and that was that. Is it really that bland? I'm suprised Corbs hasn't reviewed it yet considering it's his favorite MM game.

Yes it was that bland. You can probably skim through this thread and find where we stated on it being bland. Some of the reasons that if felt bland was that they reused most of the enemies in the levels, For example in Bubble mans stage in MM2 you had robot frogs and those giant robot fished and other robotic sea creatures. Megaman 5 just seemed to have generic badguys that appeared in most levels nothing that stood out as oh this is a water level so robotic crabs make sense or oh a desert level and they have robotic scorpions. It was more like oh look theres that robotic chicken that was in Chargemans stage and Stonemans and Wavemans etc.

My personal feeling is that MM5 just felt rushed thats all it just didnt have the same charm that the previous 4 had. To me it just seemed that they just ran out of ideas. Dont get me wrong its not a bad game its just not on the top of my favorite Megaman games.

Kudos to you Tasuki, for explaining the reused enemies concept better than I have. Put simply, Mega Man 5's flaws are:

1. The lack of variety in the music
2. The terrible Robot Master weapons
3. The extreme overuse of most of the enemies
4. The lack of variety in the castle stage bosses
5. The overall fairly easy difficulty of the game (not to mention the unlikely possiblility of a Game Over, due to the all too frequent 1-up drops from enemies)

.......but, it's still a solid Mega Man gameplay experience, and anyone who likes the series should play it for sure. Not a bad game, but not the best by a longshot. I certainly don't hate the game, as I still play it from time to time.

Anyway, that's enough rambling on about something we've already discussed. On another note, I find myself extremely tempted to buy MM4 & 5 on the VC even though I don't even need them. Still, I did already download the first 3, and I don't need them either. Just for the sake of completing the collection I suppose?

@MegaStoneSmash91: Thanks Mega and its good to see you again .

I guess if you did download them that will just prove how die hard of a Megaman fan you are , which of course theres nothing wrong with that. I have thought about buying them as well but with having the AC on the Gamecube (Yes even with the reverse buttons) I rather use my money on games I dont have.

Oh and BTW Mega, I have finished MM 9 and 10 since we last talked and I have to say I did enjoy both of them. It was nice to see Megaman go back to his 8 bit roots. I have to say I enjoyed 9 more than 10 but 10 was good to. I hope that they make a Megaman 11 here soon.

@Tasuki - 9 blew me away considering we hadn't seen an 8-bit game in like fifteen years or something like that, right? The Endless level is still a nightmare for me. I'm lucky to get to 40 screens, and I feel I'm a pretty seasoned Mega Man gamer. It's those jumps that require absolute precision that always get me. 10, on the other hand, has a tame Endless level that I really enjoyed. What I really liked about 10 was...everything. The difficulty was lowered, and the addition of Bass is great. I have a hard time playing through the game as him, increasing the difficulty for me, so it seemed more balanced. Alternate routes were great to see, and some items are really REALLY well hidden. Wily was a disappointment, but the music in the last stage is awesome.

I just had an idea for MM11. You know how in the X series, you can charge any of the boss weapons? I think that would be cool to see in an original series game. Also, NO SHIELD WEAPON! If I'm not mistaken, only 1 and 3 don't have a shield. It needs to take a break on the next game.

@Tasuki : You're welcome on the kudos, and thanks for the advice on my download situation. I'll probably end up downloading them eventually, but I'll get new games first. I'm Glad you enjoyed 9 and 10. I haven't played either in a while, but I do enjoy both of them as well. I might even enjoy 10 more than 9, but I'll have to play them again soon just to make sure.

@StuffyStuff : I highly enjoyed 10, too. Having 3 playable characters is a great addititon to the game (even though I hardly ever play as Proto Man). The Robot Masters are all pretty cool and most of the weapons aren't bad either. Some of the music is downright awesome (particularly Solar Man's and Nitro Man's stage themes, as well as a couple of the Wily songs and the Stage Select). Getting to fight some incarnations of the older Robot Masters was great as well. Also, forgive me if I can't remember, but what "hidden" items are you referring to exactly?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I hope WaveBoy finishes up his other games soon so he can play Mega Man 5. I want to hear his most recent opinion of the game since he hasn't played it in so long.

@MegaStoneSmash91: Yep thats where I am on the VC downloads. I really dont need them it would just be nice especially since I have never owned Megaman 5, 6, or 7 except for on the AC and I would like to see the difference between the originals and the AC version.. Heck that was the main reason I bought the AC was so I could play Megaman 6 at last . However since I do have them on the AC I can wait. ANd yes I agree Waveboy needs to hurry up and finish his backlog, play Megaman 5 and tell us what he thinks.

@StuffyStuff: I agree with ya no more shield weapons but than again would it be a Megaman game if there wasnt a shield weapon?

@Tasuki: That's a good method of doing things, in terms of more important downloads that is. And I know I've listed the differences between the AC and the original versions of the games in this thread at least once, but perhaps seeing them for yourself would be a better way of comparing them. There is one thing I noticed that I haven't mentioned yet, and that is the fact that, on the Anniversary Collection port of Mega Man 5 (might affect the other games too, not sure), the very bottom of the screen is cut off from view. Two very noticeable examples are the password screen, which contains a blue line on the bottom that is not visible on the AC, and a part in Gravity Man's stage that looks like a pitfall on the AC but actually is just a very low platform. It's not too big of an issue, but it's still annoying. In fact if I remember right, all the AC ports look kind of zoomed in. The sprites and everything look bigger on the screen than they do on the original versions of the games. That could explain the cut off section on the bottom.

Also, in the classic series, there is no shield weapon in Mega Man 3, 8, or Mega Man & Bass. Fire Storm in the first game could be considered one depending on who you ask. While it does produce fireballs that surround Mega Man when he fires the weapon, they only last about one or two seconds, so I would not call it a shield weapon. It's a projectile weapon more than anything else, which is what it is intended to be. Anyway, the shield-type weapon is somewhat of a staple in the series, despite not being included in all games. As long as it functions like the Jewel Satellite or Water Shield I'm fine with it, but I don't want to see another Plant or Skull Barrier or even Star Crash. Those three just weren't very useful and were mediocre shield weapons.

That's what I mean about the shield weapons. I found the Water Shield useful and kinda fun to use, but the only thing the shield weapons are generally good for are defeating bosses. Maybe if they had a homing shield like when you get the three red shells in Mario Kart, that may provide a little entertainment.

I haven't played through 10 in a few months, but one thing that comes to mind is in Commando Man's stage, at the halfway point of the stage, one of those little mines that are in the sand has two big screws hidden in it. I never land on the mines so had I not came across it in a video, I would have never thought to look under the mine considering in those pits are crab people. There are a couple others but I'm having trouble remembering.

StuffyStuff

MegaStoneSmash91

@StuffyStuff: I see what you mean now, but I don't recall there being very many hidden items like that. Most of them, like E-Tanks and 1-ups, are sitting out in the open but in a hard to reach location. I wouldn't call them hidden, though, just difficult to reach. If you remember any more examples don't forget to mention them.

And as long as the shield weapon is functional, I enjoy using it. The Skull and Plant Barriers as well as Star Crash disappear when you touch one enemy, even a weak one. With Jewel Satellite, Junk Shield, and Water Shield, you can plow through multiple enemies while the shield destroys them for you. That's the mark of a truly useful shield weapon. It has to be willing to withstand more than one blow. Skull, Plant, and Star failed while Jewel, Junk, and Water got it right, which is why it's actually enjoyable to use the latter three.

Aw, I like Star Crash. It's probably just because of how awesome it looks though.

I don't know if anyone here is aware of this, but I'm currently doing a series of Mega Man no damage runs on youtube. 9 episodes up so far, with a bunch more coming, so if anyone wants to see me kick robot butt (and get my butt kicked in return) it's here:

@MegaStoneSmash91: I never noticed that size thing that you mentioned of course its been years since I have played the original NES games since I dont have a NES. Oh and one more thing while you didnt get a shield weapon in MM3 it did make an appearance when the Doc Robot took on the Woodman form.

I finally beat Mega Man 2 (PS2 anniversary collection) on "difficult" yesterday! At this rate I will be 90 by the time I finish all 6 Nes games haha... I am so late ot the party I know but it feels good nontheless I just ordered Mega Man 3 on ebay for my NES so I will be playing that the way it was meant to be played instead of with a Dual Shock which, I feel works as a decent temporary substitute for the NES controller.

@Ryno: At least you dont have the button switcharoo on the PS like you do on the Gamecube version of the Anniversary Collection. Congrats on beating Megaman 2. Alot of people consider Megaman 2 the cream of the crop when it comes to Megaman games. Once you play the rest of the Megaman games I will be interested to here what you think of all of them. And dont worry the other Megaman games just have one difficulty setting so you wont have to play them twice.

@Tasuki I heard that about the Gamecube button difference which made my decision to get the PS2 version easier. Where would you rank Mega Man 2 difficulty wise compared to the others? Also, am I ever going to have use a Bubble Lead like weapon for the end boss again? I love Mega Man 2 except for a couple things; the random "unavoidable" bouncing bullets from the 2nd Dr. Wily's ship and the fact the final boss was a projection!

@OmegaM Yeah, I am excited for Mega Man 3. It is the game I remember most fondly as a kid. I sent my mom all over town looking to rent it when it came out. I never beat it back then though.

@Ryno: Truthfully I wouldnt really say one Megaman is hard than the others. I have beat all of them except for Megaman 8, the bad music and voice acting for MM8 pretty much ruined that game for me. I have tried several times to get into it but I just couldnt.

Anyway back on subject here, for me anyway they are all pretty easy it just knowing what order to take on the bosses and what weapon to use where. Now if we are talking length of games I would say Megaman 2 is the shortest since there is just the 8 robot masters and the one castle. Now Megaman on the other hand is a bit shorter but there are some tricky parts in the game like the lifts in Gutsmans stage and the Flying platforms in Icemans stage.... oh how I hate those things, which can make the game seem longer especially after dieing on those darn platforms over and over and over again.

Check out this video and you know what I am talking about.

Other than little stuff like that the games arent to hard at least to me.

@Tasuki Yeah, I beat Mega Man before I played Mega Man 2. I wanted to play those first 2 before I played the later versions because they didn't have the slide or charge shot mechanics. Gutsman's music will always be engrained into my mind for as many times as I tried getting past the lifts. haha

That is you making those split-second jumps against Ice Man in the video right?

@Ryno: Lol I wish. No they are done by a guy named RoahmMythril. He has a Youtube channel and one of his series are called Megaman Perfect Runs. If you have never seen them before I suggest you watch them they can be quite hilarious. Of course if you have never played the Megaman games than you might want to hold off till you play them cause they might have some spoilers in them.
