Are you kidding me?
You closed the comment section on an article because a user disagreed about calling a dead person names?
Is there a "user manual" for your comment section somewhere? Because your rulings make less and less sense by the day...
Holy duck...
I can't understand why it was closed, and why the person complaining about others bringing up things that the person in question had said during his lifetime was specifically addressed.
It would have honestly annoyed me far far less if the topic in question wasn't an obituary to a person who influences a lot of peoples lives on here.
Think of the person behind the artist what you want, but voicing dismay of not being able to "separate the art from the artist" for a brief moment to mourn the passing of an industry legend and influencer should not be a reason to lock down a thread like this.
Imo, it's quite shameful even.
I am not even surprised anymore. Some people are allowed to voice their opinions because they feel "attacked" and some other idiotic crap. We see this on almost all sites so it is no big deal anymore
Just let the sad people screech for a little and feel like they accomplished something It is not like it will really change anything
Just had a look at the comment section to bring myself up to speed. I think everybody involved has a right to their personal feelings but there are certain inputs that could have been left unsaid.
There was a clear failure to moderate those comments properly before they just gave up and locked the whole thing. Perhaps it would have turned out much worse to let discussion continue but as it stands, the whole thing is kind of messy.
I kills me how they end all criticism of moderation on this site. I mean, how do you give feedback if you just get your post deleted? How do you get others to chime in if they just delete your post? Seems like a one way street to me.
@PoliticallyIncorrect I used to moderate a fairly sizeable subreddit and it's really weird how just a touch of very limited and specific power can make people behave. Some people aren't meant for authority of any kind.
Quick disclaimer, I'm not accusing anybody on NL of acting this way - just an observation whilst we're on the topic.
Hang on to your youthful enthusiasms - you'll be able to use them better when you're older.
I can't imagine this thread will survive much longer but if you can't discuss it in the comments, like you say, it leaves things like this to actually talk about it.

I think the problem here is that NintendoLife is a child-friendly website where heated discussions about social politics and death is overall difficult not to shut down in moderation, simply because all of these things are giving bad examples. Majority of children who do browse this website never post comments and probably never communicate anywhere, but I'm sure that at least a couple of them read what others have to say in the comment section. My disagreement in that specific article had to do with the approach that the person I was replying to was taking to the situation.
An article where someone's death is being discussed is absolutely not an appropriate place for angry wars and passive aggression. It doesn't portray this website in a good light whatever way anybody tries to twist it. I don't really care about the composer's standing on things outside of gaming as it doesn't bother me in the slightest. What does bother me is when someone begins to attack another person under the same article which is mourning the composer's death. The original comment he was responding to wasn't the most gracious and thought out comment but it didn't target anybody specific present in the conversation, it was an expression of opinion and pointing at a flaw a person had. Keep in mind that this same article had absolutely no intention to start these discussions, either. Apart from a brief mention of the controversy it was meant to celebrate the composer's music and involvement on the games and yet the dude I was replying to in the comment section decided not only to take it upon himself to criticize another member in the same chat but also instigate immature attacks onto the operators of the website itself.
In my eyes pointing out a person's flaw and expressing your opinion on the matter whether it be grief or indifference is much better than starting flame wars in a place where it absolutely doesn't belong. I don't work for this website, I don't care what gets moderated or not, but I could see their reasoning for why they would do it. There are probably a lot of kids under the age of 15 who browse this website casually, and yeah, I wouldn't want these kids to get the idea that it's alright to have a petty fight in a comment section of an article reporting somebody talented passing away. To me it seems disrespectful and, honestly, embarrassing.
I could imagine they just closed the topic early before the discussion gets out of hand, as it has many times before especially about similar topics. Some threads you see on NL go way out of control to people raging at each other and disregarding others' opinions altogether just to prove a point.
@Varkster basically, yes. I was typing out another reply to this thread but yours popped up and basically says it all.
Whilst we can allow people to discuss the lives of people who have passed away (both good and bad) there should still be a level of respect and decorum, as reflected in the article text. It's unfortunate users decided to post some untasteful comments (which were removed) when they could have put across the same point in a far more constructive manner. We, therefore, took the decision to close the article to further comments to avoid any further unnecessary arguments.
Everyone agreed to a TOS when they signed up. Derailing/Hijacking a comment section and attacking others isn’t good for promoting any type of discussion (good for starting a fight though). Thread Necromancy is commonly frowned upon in most forums as well as harassing mocking the staff.
You don’t have to choose to be rude, but when you do there are consequences. I have never seen a comment section locked down so fast, but it had gotten way off topic anyway which makes it useless unless the mods wanna waste time issuing warnings and ban hammers. I don’t agree with everything on this site, but if I know that I am going to run afoul of the rules of this site, most of which are in place to keep this place halfway civil and pleasant for all users mind you, I just keep it moving. No different than a profanity filter or anything else. Don’t like it? Well you have a few options, Yelling at your screen is free and in most countries not likely to be censured or you can find a place that is just as combative as you are and let it rip (until you run afoul of their terms of service). Society is a constant state of compromise and flux. Short of either moving off the grid or becoming a dictator of a country/cult no one will ever find any aspect of society tailor made for them.
Nothing is free of consequences. For instance those of you that don’t agree with what I just said are going to pile on. But it still doesn’t change that this is a company owned site and there is a TOS in place for every user (writers too) here.

I just don't know why the article felt the need to reflect on the guy's non-game-related life.
I'm all for 'balanced views' etc. but the guy's just died and contributed hugely to a very popular series, so why bring in the controversial views when it is only going to stir further controversy. If NL wanted to mark his passing in a respectful manner, that was not the way to do it; but if NL wanted to kick up another cloud of social justice discourse, why close the comments?
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
