Topic: So, Who Here Likes Fighting Games?

I know I do. I'm thinking of popping in Capcom vs. SNK 2 while I wait for GS to open.

What about you? You like fighting games? If so, what ones you like?

EDIT:

For all those who want to play Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Together, I'm posting the TvC Online thread here and here(EU).

For the purpose of this thread, Super Smash Bros. and Powerstone are also fighting games, so I'll post the SSBB online thread here and here(EU).

I suppose we can use this thread for lesser owned games such as Street Fighter IV and the like.

I'm not the hugest fan of the fighting genre, but enjoyed the Smash Bros series well enough, and have decided to ask for Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom for Christmas. is anyone here still playing TvC online?

There's one dude left, last I checked. I could play ya if you want. It's been long enough, I barely remember the moves.

One thing I don't like about fighting games: They're murder on your thumbs.

Yeah, those are all good games. I'm tempted to get Street Fighter IV on the iPhone since I played Street Fighter II(the original) on there and I liked it a lot. I'll of course be getting Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition when I get a 3DS, though, since SSF4 is the best Street Fighter ever. They might as well include it as a pack-in, IMHO.

They're different and have a different focus. I enjoy them for what they are, but I don't like them as much as other fighting games.

I don't enjoy them at all (or Brawl, at least). There are better multiplayer/party brawlers out there.

I've recently got back into KOF 2002 thanks to some of my friends flying over and wanting a few matches. Been practicing moves in Unlimited Match. We're going to be doing a little competition on Saturday at the arcade. Pretty excited about it.

That's highly debatable. A lot of people, including myself, think Street Fighter III: Third Strike is the pinnacle of the Street Fighter series. It's an amazing fighter with a completely unique system. I haven't played SSF4 though, only SF4.

Brawl is kinda the worst in the series, IMO. It didn't hold my attention as long as the other 3 and I think there's a good reason for that.

And KOF 2002 is a very good game. I intend to pick up Unlimited Match with my next XBLA point card.

I personally don't care for Street Fighter 3 at all. The EX moves were nice, but I hated the offensive blocking or whatever it's called. I had to deal with it in CvS2 just now, and they still bugged me. Their removal alone makes SF4 miles better in my opinion, and that's not even looking at the smaller details.

Agreed, KOF 2002 was the best in the series and UM improved it even further.

EX moves are in SF4 though. Offensive parrying has been dumbed down somewhat and put in SF4 too in a different form, IIRC. Offensive parry was always optional anyway - you could get by perfectly fine with just normal blocking. It's more of a gambit system, where you take a risk to take no damage, and is intentionally difficult to do.

But those aren't what I was talking about. The game is made great by the fact that the most important things in the game are timing and maneuvering. The game is slower paced than a lot of other fighters, and the game pace and characters' fighting styles are built around predicting your opponent's attacks and countering them (and mostly not with "counterattack" moves either). It's built to be tactical - a thinking man's fighter, if you will. An example of the game system in action:

Justin (Chun Li) vs Daigo (Ken) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pS5peqApgUA
[youtube:pS5peqApgUA]

J (Makoto) vs Kokujin (Dudley) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4wAaQug4HQ
[youtube:p4wAaQug4HQ]

The Justin vs Daigo video is famous (if you don't want to watch the whole thing, just watch the final round). Notice the amount of manuevering and normal attacks being used in both videos, rather than all-out offense and special attacks like you'd see in most games. Two incredible set of rounds.

^Well, I'm not a thinking man, so SF3 is not for me.

As for KOF 2002, while I do like it a lot, I personally don't think its the best in the series. It's too stiff, I didn't like the move set ups for a lot of characters, and its just plain ugly at times. I also didn't like the character omissions they made. With Unlimited Match, I think it might actually be a solid contender for the best, alongside KOF'98 (and Ultimate Match although it didn't really improve it) and KOFXI.

I like playing fighter games sometimes. There's the Tekken series, the Street Fighter series, SoulCalibur II, any SNK fighting game. I don't know if these count: but I also like the Super Smash Bros. series and the two Power Stone games.

To each their own

@Mickeymac I figured as much. SF4 just seems boring to me after playing a lot of other fighters.

One of the best fighters I've played is Melty Blood: Act Cadenza. Anyone else played this? Ridiculously good game. Extremely balanced and fun. Its 4 player mode is a blast too. Crazy combo video (not representative of actual gameplay LOL):

Also, I haaaate Melty Blood: Act Cadenza. I really do, with all my heart. It's such an annoying fighter. One of the few fighters I don't like, actually. I only played ver. A, though, I think. There's no way what I played could be considered "balanced". Judging from that video, though, it's possible that it's yet another "thinking man's game" so that could explain why I don't like it.

@Mickeymac I have MBAC Ver.B (PC) and it has a lot of balance tweaks from ver.A. Then they made Actress Again and ruined the whole thing again. Bah. I haven't been following the series since.

Hmm, I didn't like XI much. The roster is small (I understand the reasons) and the gameplay seemed a little stale. I haven't played XI much though - only a few rounds at the arcade - so I don't know the finer details of its system. Dream Cancels look cool but I don't know how to pull them off lol. The characters look nicer than the old pixelated ones, but I'm not a big fan of Nona's style. Athena looks completely out of place now - though from what I understand, that was due to the director's input. Still, I much prefer Hiroaki's recent work. All of his promotional art for Ultimate Match and Unlimited Match is great.

Oh yeah, 98 was excellent and that's possibly the best of the non-remakes although it's really up in the air between 98 and 2002. Both are tournament-standard and popular among players. My personal favourite is 99, just because it was the first one I played on a home console and it has some of the best music in the series. I was really hoping the new games would be bringing back the greater focus on music like 99-2001 had, but I guess it's not happening. :/

2002 UM is most certainly the best in the series so far IMO. It overhauls 2002 in the areas which needed improving, the roster is immense, the music is great and King is finally in it! If I had to recommend just one KOF game to someone, I'd choose it. You're in for a treat when you buy it, trust me. Now... if only it had netplay!

EDIT: Oh, and there are more than 6 final bosses. I haven't fought them all yet. Does it get any better? This is a true dream match, haha.

I'm partial to old school fighters, my favorites being Super Street Fighter II and Fatal Fury Special. In the arcades, of course SF and FF, but I also like X-Men Children of the Atom, Darkstalkers and Tekken. I haven't played many fighters on the newer systems but what I have played I have liked. Oh, and MvC naturally.

All great games, seriously. Especially Dark Stalkers, FF Special, and SSF2. I'm personally not partial to Children of the Atom, but it's still a good game, I just couldn't get the hang of it. Super Street Fighter 2 was my first btw, and I still go back to it. Just outta curiosity, do you have any Fighters on the VC?

Yeah, and I just remembered why I didn't like Act Cadenza - turns out I was playing as the boss character, and I bored myself dominating the AI in arcade mode with a royally cheap b*******. If I had access to ver.B, I'd totally play it, it seems like a pretty fun game, now that I've the other characters actually do something.

And yeah, KOF '99 was pretty epic in my opinion, and I liked it a lot. Kinda the bottom of my favorites, but still up there. Actually, I liked the whole series, even KOFXII, but only about 6 of them are truly epic in my opinion ('96, '98, '99, '02, '03, XI).

Also, the home port of KOFXI added a bunch of new characters, endings, stages, and music, and had some awesome modes, too. I'm not sure if it changed up the gameplay from the arcade version other than some balancing tweaks, though. But I really, really liked it. I felt the improvements from '03 were refreshing, and the faster pace of the gameplay kept my blood pumping at all times! I really can't say enough good about it. The only problem I had were the lack of some important characters and the music (which still isn't very good). Oh, and the cheapo final boss who seems to exceed every SNK Boss up till this point. Other than that, it's clearly one of my fave fighting games ever!
