I am so absolutely gutted to pass along the news that former Nintendo Life writer Philip J Reed has passed away. I found out as the website he had been writing for, Triple Jump, is doing a charity stream in his honor: https://youtu.be/_3Mlq_uAng8

I got to know Philip as we both wrote for this site around the same time, and I can say without hesitation that he was an incredible guy. He was so kind and so funny, and such an incredibly talented writer. Some of you may have known him as Chicken Brutus.
I hope people can use this thread to share good memories of Philip. What a devastating loss.
Search his name or ChickenBrutus to read some of the funniest and best articles ever posted on this website. That's not hyperbole, he was an amazing writer and so so funny.
Damn, absolutely gutted from this news. Him along with Cobie, and a few others is why I joined this site so many years ago. I always enjoyed talking with him about old NES games and reading his articles. People like him truly made the time from 2008 to 2013 the Golden Era of this site.
My thoughts to his friends and family during this difficult time.
I am sure @NeonPizza will like to know about this.

Oh god that's awful. My condolences to his family and friends. I wasn't around while he was here but after reading some of his older articles I wish I was, he will be missed.
Games I'm playing right now:
Tears of the Kingdom - Switch
I am heartbroken to be hearing this news. I always enjoyed reading his Virtual Console NES reviews back in the day. Prayers and condolences to his family~
This is...wow. Not sure how to adequately describe how I'm feeling. I've been around long enough to see some of his writing and topics - not as a bona fide user, but as a lurker before that (I think since 2011ish? Thanks, Skyward Sword) - and he was a very talented, funny writer.
From an internet stranger, my sympathies, prayers, care, and condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and interacted with him.
Wow, that is very sad news. I haven't been around here long enough to know who he was, but he seems to have been a pretty important part of the community here back in the day. My condolences to his family.

I just hope people remember him. A Chicken Brutus article used to be an event. You always knew you were in for a treat. People loved his stuff on this site. I hope his fans remember him. I hope people keep reading his work. I hope he is remembered. I will remember him.
This is terrible! I don't think I've ever really communicated with him, but I definitely recognize the name as one of the people behind the scene of the site from when I joined (2011, around the 3DS launch).
Condolences to his family.

This is really sad to hear. I don't think I communicated with him, but I do recognize his name as well, and I send my absolute best wishes to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Philip.

I didn’t keep up with what Philip did afterwards and I will now rectify that, but he was always just a nice guy and great character on the site. He brought great humour and it was heart warming and encouraging to see his development when he got the opportunity to start writing reviews. At first he was given the awful shovelware to review as the site was trying to review everything and that was really funny. Eventually he got to review some decent games, his talent was nurtured here.
Was shocked to see this news, Philip was so amazing in the time I knew him here at Nintendo Life, and I wish I'd stayed in touch better.
As for memories I have, they're typically funny. Philip was incredibly witty, sharp, and pretty strong willed too. Our first real interaction was actually an argument! I'd only been on the site a short time when I took on an editorial role, and some early proofreading I did was of one of his reviews. It was a clumsy edit as I didn't know what I was doing, and he was not at ALL happy with a few of the adjustments. But then we talked and it was water under the bridge, he never held grudges (and he was right, I'd done a poor job!).
Philip used to famously be given terrible games to review, because he was so darn funny that the bosses couldn't resist it. I think he took pleasure in it too, but he really shone in his features, some of which remain the best to ever grace these pages. He was such an exceptional writer, it was no surprise that he went on to produce books and other wonderful writing.
My memories are mostly of his humour. He always made me laugh, and he was such a kind soul as well. Rest in peace, Philip.
Posting a reply to another user in another thread brought back a memory of Philip for me. He Introduced me to one of my favorite YouTube channels RohamMythril who does buster only no damage Mega Man runs, among other games.
Phil and I were discussing Mega Man games and he told me how he's trying to do no damage buster runs like Roham, I didn't know who he was talking about so, he told me to check out his channel on YouTube, this was back in the early days of YouTube I want to say 2010ish.
Anyway I checked out his channel and enjoyed it alot, I still watch him to this day as his content is still a joy to watch. He's also one of my son's favorites too. He isn't a well known YouTube like say AVGN many others so I more then likely would have never found him if Phil didn't suggest him. In fact everytime I turn on Roham, I think of those conversations I had with Philip and how he told me about the channel.
