Topic: Nintendo Switch's lack of VC

Is the VC for Switch more likely than not happening? It seems like Nintendo is purposely moving away from VC with Classic Edition consoles and Classic Games on the subscription service. I mean if Nintendo is planning to bring the VC over why would it keep saying they have nothing to announce when they announced VC for Wii, Wii U and 3DS before the systems were released? Also it kind of seems like Nintendo might not want to bring back the VC because it's having a hard time justifying having people who downloaded the games and paid 2-3 times to pay again. If they put them on a new format like Classic Edition consoles they can get people to pay again. It really stinks because before the Switch launched, Eurogamer came out with rumors of GameCube games on VC and many got excited with playing GCN games on the go but it looks like we would be lucky if we get VC games on the Switch at all. I would be interested in reading your thoughts on whether the Switch will be getting VC games (Especially the rumored GCN games).

The Classic Editions are the new Virtual Console. It's a console, and they're so rare you may as well consider them virtual.

Except the fact that with those mini console you are forced to buy a predetermined set of games while on Virtual console you had the freedom to choose every single game you wanted and leave out the others, the fact that with mini console you have to waste hdmi connectors only for a few retrogames that could have been sold on the console you already have connected to your hdmi port, the fact that you are forced to play those mini consoles at home on your tv while you could play them on the go too with Switch... Nintendo just did the dumbest thing possible in this case

I agree, if Nintendo doesn't continue the VC it would be a very dumb move. The question is why are they holding back on it and instead choose to do the mini consoles? Adding to the mystery is a few months ago there was a trademark filed for Eternal Darkness, a GCN game. It would heavily hint that GCN VC will come to Switch but nothing is mentioned on the VC at all. It's like as if Nintendo knew what people want and does the opposite to anger and frustrate them. Mini consoles in demand, yes but making it a limited production run. People want VC, nothing to announce.... I don't recall the last time Nintendo actually listened to fans' requests. Making the NES CE production run a few months longer doesn't count, they still discontinued it when they knew many still would buy them and haven't had a chance to purchase them.

What I think happened is Nintendo were originally planning the normal VC approach (maybe starting with GC this time) then the NES Mini way outsold their expectations and fan expectations for VC transfer to be free like XB1 backwards compatibility were very loud so as a result Nintendo decided to scrap the traditional VC style in favour of mini retro consoles and NES games for the online subscription.

I don't mind these Mini Classic Editions and very well understand that they could be seen as a replacement for VC but the great thing about VC is that you have all these classic games from across Nintendo's history all in one console, that in Switch's case can even be carried around wherever. Honestly, the mobility aspect is it what makes me actually care about a VC on Switch. You can have these annual Classic Editions, Nintendo, but please don't retire VC because of them! Also, keep these NES games, gimme SNES and N64, baby!

But all we can do now is wait until that subscription goes live next year and hope that it won't be limited to NES games for too long.

Since I avoid online multiplayer gaming and online based games in general at all cost I'm not going to pay the online subscription. I think it will be unfair if Nintendo will make those games playable only for people who pay online subscription (like a lending, you will never actually own the game :/ ) and won't give the possibility to buy them for people who would like to actually buy them instead. It would be very mean on their part imho. I just hope that someday when the hype about mini consoles fade out and people will begin to (understandably) lose interest in those... knick-knacks with a few rom files stuffed inside they will begin to finally release their retro games on Switch too. They would have been a lot more useful and interesting now that we still have a limited library of games for obvious reasons but it will be still better than never.

Sad Nintendo Killed the Virtual Console. RIP Virtual Console 2006-2017
I'm glad i kept my Wii and WiiU for that purpose and I'll just play that still and my retro collections.
Not gonna try and hunt down these limited releases of Retro Nostalgia consoles that are impossible to buy.
