as much as I'd love that(and have been dreaming about for years)
not happening, especially not with Nintendo swapable buttons are easy to fail and to break(the connectors) and sadly Nintendo always thinks on the kids first such a thing wouldn't last more than a month in a kid's hand and they would lose money with all the people lying to keep the warranty and get a free fix.... >.>

Hmmm....it seems to be a bit of a stretch for this to become a new iteration in the 3DS lineup, perhaps we'll see this in use in the next handheld.
On a side note, I've always wished that I could swap the positions of the Circle Pad and the D Pad.
Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.
Now playing:
Final Fantasy XIV (PC) | The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch) | Celeste (Switch)
Maybe... left handed gamers rejoice? Imagine if you could swap which sides the buttons are on... left handed people could finally be comfortable! (I hear lots of complaints about that from left handed gamers)

that's too near sighted if it was just lefty support they could just slap in a circle pad on the left and make the ABXY in a way that feels similar to the D-pad.
swapable buttons are more than this, you're not happy with the positioning? SWAP! there's a button you never use? REMOVE! a button broke? CHEAP SPARE PARTS! like custom stuff? VOILA!!!!! want to mod you console? THAT DOES IT! you'd rather have an analog stick instead of the circle pad? BOOM!!!!!
swapable buttons:
in the right hands it's the future of infinite possibilities!!! in the wrong hands(AKA careless people) it won't last at all.
I dream about videogames with 200% customizable controls and swapable parts since I got my rumble pack in N64!!!!!!

Surely this would be more applicable for a mobile device? Maybe we will finally see Nintendo heading in that direction, maybe even a tease at E3!....
actually a mobile device would suffer even more with such a design.
people put their mobile devices in the pockets now imagine how many would lose their parts(even if it had a lock in the slots) and in a rainy day you can't leave your phone behind so it'd get wet in the connectors and break. not to count it'd be either clunky(for a mobile) or way too fragile. and that's only a fraction of the problems.
this design would work best on a home console.

Much like using a computer mouse with my right hand I've gotten very used to pressing buttons with my right hand and directions with my left on a controller, so I would personally disagree (I am, of course, left handed).
Looks like they're just patenting the technology they created while making the 3DS just in case.
seems the most likely. Nintendo hasn't used very many of their odd patents.
that's probably it, it's way too similar to the 3DS, if you look closely most of the times Nintendo changes the start and select buttons when it's a new handheld/different model(the exceptions being GB Pocket,GBC and the "XL" handhelds)

Just think, 6 years from now Nintendo will get sued over this.
I bet it'll only take 4 years!
