what games have you come very close to finishing but didn't cause that always happens to me. ocarena of time, i got to the very end and for some reason i've never picked the game back up! don't know why because i heard the ending is REALLY good. and then major's mask, i accidently erased my saving . windwaker i never even got a chance to finish because my dad took the game and finished it!!! and the same thing happened in Twilight Princess!!!!!!! wtf WHY?
For me it's Super Paper Mario. I really enjoyed the game, but somehow I lost all urge to play it once I reached Count Blek's castle. I might even go so far as to say I've avoided playing it.
Super Mario RPG - Got to the last boss but can't defeat him since I'm too low-leveled.
Wind Waker - It just couldn't hold my attention for long and was never bothered to finish it.
Cave Story - Keep getting killed by the core, three (or four if you call the Doctor's transformation a boss) bosses in a row without heals. Hardest ending to a game I have ever played.
Uh...a lot. Like, every Zelda game, Metroid Prime 3, Symphony of the Night. Basically, if it's a really good game I'll get close but never actually beat it.

Smart move, as I recall they were the 4 worst levels in the entire game.
@xDemon720x: Believe it or not, that's only the final boss if you don't get the best ending. If you did all the side-quests involving Curly, there's one more boss waiting at the end of the secret "Hell Level". It's absolutely brutal.
