Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

Play it in the dark with headphones on. I dare you not to scream. I seriously threw my mouse clean across the desk at one point.

Nightmare on elm St. (Nes)
Does Castlevania count? Not really scary but appropriate for the season.
I'm also a Big RE fan! Gotta love blasting Zombies!
Why hasn't anyone made a Scream videogame?
That seems like a cool idea.

If so, then it is my favorite too.

For scary games I have only played the Silent Hill and Resident Evil series soooooo I guess I have to say that the original Silent Hill scares me the most.

Bloop.

RE... wow that is creepy! Even on Mercs, hearing a chainsaw or seeing an axe weilding dude makes me flee for my life!

But the scariest by far is Silent Hill, just videos of it scare the bejeezus out of me.

Strange as it sounds, I found The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask to be pretty terrifying at some points. Aside from the impending doom of the moon. And seeing it get closer and closer. Yeah, you use the Ocarina to return to day 1 when you have to. But, it's still scary. A lot of the music captures the mood well also.

@Link79
They did release an iOS version of Scream 4 to coincide with it's theatrical release in April (movie is awesome, btw). Keep thinking I'll download it sometime. You play as Ghostface. I am surprised 1-3 never had any kind of game, though. They deserved to.

@TeeJay
Absolutely frightening! (wondered how long it would take to get a response like that, hee hee! Randy Meeks FTW!!!)

You all need to play Amnesia. Think Resi is scary? Try a game where you have absolutely no way whatsoever of fronting an offensive on the undead; where there is no map, no radar, no supportive NPCs; where the whole environment is too dark to see other than the light created by your lantern (which consumes oil at an alarming rate) and your increasingly scarce number of tinderboxes; where the light you create puts you at risk of being spotted by the undead; and where your only option for survival is to fashion yourself a hiding space and wait, in the dark, only able to listen for the sounds of your pursuer to determine when it is safe to come out, praying that they are no longer in the vicinity and aren't simply just waiting for you to pop your head out.

There's also a level that turns the classic children's game of The Floor Is Lava into a brutal and terrifying game of cat-and-mouse with an invisible creature that chases you if you dare to venture into the water. It's impossible to progress without getting your feet wet, but just how close do you dare to let those splashes from behind come to you before you bail for the nearest bit of land?

Now that is a seriously scary game.

Amnesia? That one game that guy plays on Youtube and screams at?
"OH GAWD WHY WON'T THE DOOR OPEN AGGGGH IT'S COMING AGGGGH"
Yeah. Scary stuff.
Also, my favorite scary game?

Minecraft, no joke. Play it a bit, and get involved with its community. When you learn about Herobrine, EVERYTHING starts to fall apart.

The scariest game I'VE played is by far Resi. 4, probably the scariest game BY FAR in the series. One second, you're walking...
Then a split-second later, you have to press two specific buttons to dodge the-
Oh, too late. You watch Leon's headless body fall limp to the floor.
That's another thing. How come only RE 4 showed the gruesome parts? Take the chainsaw guy for example. In RE 4, it'll actually show your head come off. But in almost every other RE game, it shows it going into your neck, then- BAM- Perspective switch, and now you can't see your upper body.
Oh well. At least it decreases the horror-ness.

@FluttershyGuy
Something about it freaked me out, too. I forgot, though, haven't played it in forevenr... Ugh... WHAT WAS IT?!

Well said, SushiLax, well said indeed.

Yeah, I'm going with Amnesia on this one. Even near the end of the game your heart is still pounding by some of the stuff the game pulls, whether or not you're actually scared. It's a game for those that have a heart of steel, only for them to realize that they don't actually have one.

Paranoia-inducing Japanese-style horror ? Check.
Creepy/MOVING porcelain dolls? Check.
Suffocating environments? Check.
Chase scenes starring this chick? Oh God, check.

All it's missing is an engaging story. Oh wait, it totally had that too.
This game is awesome.

I agree with this. Sure, it managed to somehow crash my computer twice but I guess you could say that added to the horror.

Much as I love the Silent Hill series they didn't scare me as much as disturb me and that's very different. Would definitely agree with Fatal Frame/Project Zero. That had some very creepy and nasty moments.

Haunting Ground on the PS2 was a scary one. A Resi engine with an unarmed main character relentlessly pursued by some very messed up people. Your character panics and loses control and stumbles at the worst moment and your heart rate leaps to match hers.

One of the scariest games I played was Hellnight on the PS. First person maze, again no weapons and a monster that is chasing you every step of the way. You can only tell how close it is to you by the sound of its breathing. Also features the run too much and you get tired option complete with heart beat pulsing controller, red screen and swaying vision. Truly nightmarish.
