Don Mattrick was good at digging Xbox One into a deeper hole with comments like "if you don't have an internet connection just get an Xbox 360" (paraphrasing) and not being more clear about the controversial features of the system.
The actual quote is worse than that paraphrasing.
"Fortunately, we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity, it's called Xbox 360."
So smug and dismissive. Not to mention that there's another product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity, it's called Playstation 4.

I didn't remember exactly what he said hence the paraphrasing, but yeah Microsoft had a sense of smugness regarding the Xbox One that reminded me of how arrogant Sony was with the PS3. No wonder they got the backlash they did.
Some random dude on Nintendo Life.
Toriel left for a while, so Freaky Fred took over her place!
Not changing this part of the signature until Nintendo announces Super Mario Sunshine 2.

Depending on how quickly they can be put together, I'd like to see more put on the Wii U before NX. Strikers, sure, Golf, OK, do basketball and hockey games too.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
So, I've said this before, but if you ask me, Mario Sports titles come off as cheap.
Not in the sense that they are poorly made, but in the sense that Nintendo doesn't want to pay for the rights from player associations to put players in their games. That doesn't mean it has to be realistic. NHL Hitz, NBA Courtside, and even Backyard Sports all used player licenses despite a lack of realism.

I don't think many of the Mario Sports fans would like it if Nintendo added real people to their games.
I agree, I don't care that Mario Tennis exists, but anything real isn't the point of those games. Adding real players wouldn't add anything to the game, only take away. And how many Nintendo fans know the name of one famous Tennis player anyway? I doubt that many do.

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Steve Wawrinka, Gilles Muller.
And I'm not a hardcore tennis fan at all. I watch it when I happen upon it on TV.
Anyway, that's aside the point. Adding real players significantly broadens the appeal of a game. Now, you are appealing to people who are fans of sports. People who want to play as their favorite players. It DOESN'T add realism to the games. NHL Hitz allows you to create players with giant clown heads who have minimized shooting and speed stats, and maximized checking and aggression stats. When you get into a fight, it looks like a simplified game of Street Fighter. When you score 3 goals, you're player catches fire. I had a more realistic sports experience playing Mario Golf on N64 than I did playing NHL Hitz.
Nintendo can include all that crazy gameplay, but also include real players so that fans can enjoy that element.
Last time they added something from the real world to a Mario spinoff, the fans went kinda nutty.
So I still don't think it would be a wise idea, unless the game is clearly labeled as "Mario & [Sports company/team]'s [sport]".
The issue with the Mercedes deal in Mario Kart is that it seemed like a cash grab, and they didn't really do anything to make it fit the game. It would be like if they had put an adult A-Rod with realistic proportions in Backyard Sports. If they had added 4 cars from different companies, and those cars looked cartoony and disproportionate like the rest of the game, I think the response would have been different.
They can totally make the real players they use look ridiculous and cartoony to fit the style. But there is something special to being able to use real players.

I said most Nintendo fans, now, I may be projecting here, but I still doubt the general Nintendo fan knows who they are, or wants them in. I know I wouldn't like it if they added real people. And besides, short of making them Miis, I don't see what else they could really do without breaking the tone, as Mario sports isn't NBA Jam.

Around a decade ago, that kind of thing was possible and it happened. But now such a thing is impossible because every license is exclusive to certain companies -cough- EA -cough- who wanted nothing more than to have no competition.

Not that I'm advocating the idea of real people or anything, but I figure most people know Venus & Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova just like they know Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning, Tiger Woods, etc. I'm not a fan of ANY sport but I can list off some famous players because they're just as much celebrities as they are athletes.

That's a problem for Football, Hockey, Soccer, and I think Golf. There hasn't been an exclusive license for baseball in 3 years, and I don't think there is a license for basketball or tennis either.
