@NintendoPete I really enjoyed Dark Metal but it was a tad too dense for it's own good, it could have used some space for the story to breathe and have it's ideas settle down. For me personally the artwork was a big factor to keep reading it as it was Capullo on top form. I loved the evil Batman issues, The Murder Machine was my favourite, Alfred was brilliant in both a sense of motivate and his use. And yeah, I though the Plastic Man Egg was going somewhere too but perhaps it was setting something else further down the road, Bendis has been biging Plastic Man up recently so maybe a solo-book is on the way or something.
I like to collect comics(mainly in the graphic novel style), though I don't really go for the big name stuff like Marvel or DC(though I have the Infinity Gauntlet), my collection mainly consists of Transformers and Power Rangers, with a couple of TMNT, MLP and Invader Zim comics scattered in between
I've just finished reading Secret Empire, it was ok but I don't get all of the controversy. Early on it's shown there was another non-Nazi Cap (even before that there's magic reality cube involved) and at the end he's forgiven so there's no damage to the character, it's not really pro-right-wing/fascism either as they are shown to be baddies and get defeated in the end. Tbh I thought it could of used more satire/commentary in it as it's too much of a basic macguffin hunt despite all of the "controversy".
I can't decide on which run/event to read next. I really need to get around to John's Green Lantern at some point but I can never hype myself to do so.
Anyone been reading the Avengers relaunch? I've been really impressed with the scope of threat, and I'm digging how Ghost Rider is there as a wild card. I'm also really looking forward to the new Fantastic Four series in August. Love me some Fantastic Four!
I've become weary of the stop-start relaunches from Marvel over the last few years but I've really enjoyed Jason Aaron's work so I'm willing to give this a chance. I'm hoping it will make use of the BC Avengers.
I've just finished Batman White Knight and it's perhaps one of my favourite Batman stories. They have used Harley Quinn fantasticly, I don't think I've enjoyed her this much since Gotham City Sirens and features her as being both in an abusive relationship as well as the Bonnie and Clyde love story from Suicide Squad. You can tell there is alot of love for the 90s cartoon in the issues without it just being a straight rip of the show, you can see it from little things like the choice of rogues such as Roxy to the way the Bruce-Babs-Dick relationship is played. There's a few things I've seen done before like what if Joker was sane, Batman is the causes the supervillians and he needs work with the cops but it feels very fresh and an individual take of the characters.
I prefer buying graphic novels/tpb collections for all of my comics. I collected individual comic books as a youth, but as an adult I'm only interested in the longer collected volumes with meatier reading experiences. That said, these are some of the best graphic novels I've ever read:
1. Wonder Woman: Mission's End by Greg Rucka
2. Wolverine: Enemy of the State by Mark Millar
3. Wolverine: Complete Collection 1-2 by Jason Aaron
4. Punisher MAX: Complete Collection volume 7 by Jason Aaron
5. Hulk: Planet Hulk by Greg Pak
6. Amazing Spider-Man: Ultimate Collection 1-5 by J. Michael Straczynski
7. Daredevil: Ultimate Collection 1-3 by Brian Michael Bendis
8. Daredevil: Ultimate Collection 1-3 by Ed Brubaker
If you're into digital comics, the Marvel CD-ROM collections are a must own. There's several of them, X-Men, FF, Hulk, Spider-Man, Avengers, etc, all contain complete collections from their first issues all the way up to 2006, as high-res PDFs. They're out of print now and can be a little pricey but they 100% worth it. I bought all of them back when they were like $40. Here's an example:
The Incredible Hulk: The Complete Collection https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MVJZGM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Ikp...
Never been really into comics outside of reading manga on sketchy sites when I was younger (though I did have a Godzilla manga, the Death of Superman & some sort of Spider-Man comic as a kid).
However, I've noticed that there are a lot of comics available for free as part of my Amazon Prime subscription (even though most seem to just be the first volume, or maybe some stand alone stuff), so I've decided to dabble by adding some various things to my reading list. Currently reading the first volume of Ultimate Spider-Man (because I had the PS2 game when I was younger, lol), but also have Batman Year One, Darth Maul, Fairy Tail, and a few other things lined up.
I know this is an older thread, so if the mods would rather I start up a new one that's fine, but hopefully this is okay.

It’s depressing reading the first page of this thread. The comic industry has been struggling for decades and has greatly shrunk in readership but people are justifying not spending a few bob to read them because it costs too much.
Yeah honestly when it comes to comics I don't even bother with individual issues. I prefer trade paperbacks 100% of the time
Speaking of which I got Daredevil: Born Again from a comic shop at a mall I visited with my family yesterday. Really sad that the Netflix series never got around to adapting this arc with Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin or Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock. This arc is fantastic.

@TheFrenchiestFry don’t get me wrong as Frank Millar and Born Again are fantastic but it feels people overly focus on them as THE take on Daredevil despite there being other top tier runs. Chip Zdarsky, Mark Waid, Brubaker, Bendis, Ann Nocenti etc are all fantastic, the Bendis run in particular was really good.
I liked all of the Netflix shows but despite how horrible the first season of Iron Fist was I would have kept IF going out of all of them if I was forced to choose. The amount of course correction and interesting things they did in season 2 made me want another season after being bored of it plus it left The Heaven Tournament untapped whilst the other shows got alot of their key moments from the comics on screen already.
@jump I'd say Brubaker, Miller/Janson and Mark Waid are my favorite runs of Daredevil, but standalone stories like Daredevil Yellow by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale are also excellent interpretations of the character, as is Guardian Devil by Frank Smith
It's just that Miller was definitely one of the writers who played a hand in establishing the basis for how Daredevil would come to be modernized as a character and his runs introduced a lot of common staples, including the conception of the character Elektra (who I personally really don't like), but there are other writers who've risen up to his level in their contributions to the character. The current run is actually really good so far.

I have a short manga about Muay Thai.
It was very rare to find Kickboxing manga that really fit with my taste (not too cruel violent)
The title is 3000 Baht Sam by Takeshi Maekawa.
It was the 2nd part of Tekken Chinmi Gaiden manga.
@TheFrenchiestFry completely agree, without Miller DD wouldn't just not relevant today but there's so much more to DD than just Miller I'd like to see adapted in movies or TV.
I think you mean Kevin Smith. The thing I like about his issues is he was actually using DD's religion. A lot of DD writers seem to ignore he's Catholic. I like Elektra myself when she's used properly, there's been weird stuff when they try to make a her a dance teacher which makes question if they don't understand the character why are they using them.
@jump I definitely mixed together Frank Miller and Kevin Smith's names for a sec
I do really like how Smith's stories leaned closer to exploring Matt's beliefs and his overall moral code whereas Miller definitely tapped more into his greater psychology and personal emotions. They're both essentially dissections of the character's core traits

Finished up the first volumes of Ultimate Spider-Man & Darth Maul!
As for Spider Man, there were probably some extra things that elevated it (such as the fact that he's one of my favorite superheroes, and being the early 00's interpretation of the character, specifically designed to appeal to people of my age, as I would have been around 10 at the time of it's release), but I got really into it (even though it pretty much just covered the origin up to his first Green Goblin encounter). Really don't want to commit time to a long running narrative, but it's going to be a hard time holding myself back I think, lol.
Darth Maul was a pretty good read too. It had great use of color (especially his eyes burning in the darkness), and the volume felt stand alone, with it's particular narrative wrapping up nicely by the last issue included, which I liked.

Forgot about this thread. I don't have any recent acquisitions, but I did pick up and read through Batman: Year One several months ago. I definitely recommend that one. It was a neat take on Bruce Wayne/Batman's early career, along with James Gordon's first year in Gotham City.
@Tasuki To be fair, I did include graphic novels as part of a general overview of my collection a couple of pages back. (Yeesh. Two years ago?) But yeah, the manga discussions belong in that respective thread.

Absolutely striking art direction that manages to capture the griminess of Gotham while not being all grey & brown, and it was a pleasantly dense read as well. If I had to level a complaint against it, it's that it sort of just ended. Granted, it was just an origin story at the end of the day, but I guess I was looking for a more explosive climax after that absolutely thrilling showdown in the abandoned building that happened around the middle of the story.
Still highly recommended though, and it's free digitally if you have Amazon Prime.
