Topic: Getting a Gaming TV

I am pretty much a casual gamer. I would probably be ok with just about anything new, but who doesn’t like nice stuff? Almost all TVs are 4K now. What features are worth the upgrade when evaluating a TV? What brands do you prefer or avoid?

@rockodoodle I would consult Consumer Reports. I got a Samsung NU8000 around May 2019(which was a 2018 model on sale). I'll have a subscription to CR. I'll go look at what the top brands are currently, and get back to you.

Spring is a good time to shop, since stores are putting previous year models on sale as new ones come in. By Late May, and June previous year models can be sold out. So, I would aim to buy something by early April.

I shopped at Best Buy. They actually had the Models I wanted, and had the same or better prices than wholesale club - BJ's. And I liked being able to see the tv before I bought.

In the past couple years that's been the move to OLED. While edge lit LED TVs don't quite deliver HDR as well as OLED. (I think that's right?). My model was one of the best performing LED, tv's, rivaling OLED. At the time, in 2019, there was huge price jump from LED to OLED. OLEDs were more like $1400-2500, I think? I got my tv for $950.

I'm sure there are better tv options this year vs the 2018/2019 models when I shopped.

In case you wanted to see what I got.

So, it’s worth the upgrade to OLED? It seems there’s a big gap in price with refresh rate from 60 to 120. Is that worth it too? Or is that some mainly hardcore gamers pay attention to?

@rockodoodle Very few games on any console actually take advantage of 120fps. That's more of a hardcore PC gamer thing. I wouldn't spend extra on a TV with a higher refresh rate.

@rockodoodle That's up to you. I think the picture quality is probably worth it to go OLED, based on what I saw in 2019.

Back in 2019 most TV's that said 120 hz refresh rate were not true 120, it was a software/marketing thing to replicate 120? True 120 required more power that was a major price premium. (my tv doesn't have true 120 hz, but it've been happy with it. It was a top performer on Consumer Reports. Keep in mind, FiOS tv still doesn't broadcast true HD programming ,or 4K for that matter. (depending on your tv service, unless you've gotten new cable boxes recently?. My cable boxes are old))

@rockodoodle

Top brands on Consumer Reports (for 60" and larger)
LG
Sony
Samsung

a couple TCL toward the bottom of their top 25-30 models

Granted the top performers will likely be pricier. Vizio and others likely still make decent TVs.

Excellent... that was the main difference I saw in the pricing. You can get a solid TV for $350-$750. Then the high end TVs with the refresh rate end up hitting $900-$2k

Samsung makes a 32 inch frame tv that is 1080p. That’s what I would buy if I didn’t need a huge tv.

I think 50 inches would be a good set up for my set, budget and needs

I've got my eye on the Q950TS Samsung QLED. Im holding off until I get an XsX and PS5 as my XsS doesn't do full 4k so its pointless buying an 8k TV.
It's a little bit pricier than other sets but it's only £100 a month with a new sound bar on finance.
