I think I've answered this thread once but...
I wasn't allowed to play M rated games until I was 13 then I started not allowing myself to play M games until I had the right age.

why the hell did you restrict yourself??
I'm a good boy. (and wasn't losing much since I couldn't stand the thought of seeing blood red, yeah even the color made me feel uneasy)

I wasn't allowed to buy or play Star Fox Assault way back when because on the cover Fox is holding a gun. Mama always told me, "No games with guns!"
I then went home and played 007 Nightfire, and that was OKAY for some reason.

there's only one logic explanation for this. you mother's a James Bond fan!

That is completely true.
It's still exactly like this as well.
Playing Uncharted/Red Dead Redemption/Tomb Raider - "I don't like this."
Playing Goldeneye Reloaded or 007 Legends - "Do you mind if I just sit here for a bit and watch you play? This is neat!"
I asked for Goldeneye 007 for my birthday. Because it launched on my birthday, she didn't wrap it. She then called me, saying she got it, but saw that there was a gun on the boxart and refused me to play it, despite just showing me that she got. I never understood why she bought it in the first place. My dad came home a few hours later, and convinced her.
You could say that that's not a childhood thing, but technically it was my 13th birthday, when my mother had a change of heart, I consider myself no longer a child, at a certain degree.
I was never really restricted from playing M rated games since I would occasionally play them at my cousin's house( I remember playing GTA and a horror game called The Thing, which gave me nightmares). I wasn't that interested in them though and mostly stuck with E rated games like Mario and Pokemon. I didn't buy an M rated game until Resident Evil 4 Wii edition and that wasn't until I was 14. Even now that I'm 19 its pretty rare for me to buy M rated games.
I only started buying M rated titles in the last two years or so. Even when my parents are home, I feel the need to pause the game simply out of habit. Not only was I not allowed to purchase them until a couple years ago, but I have similar reasons as @Csaw does, not a lot of interest in what is out there in the M section. I only have a handful of M titles on my shelf. I find myself still buying more E or T rated titles than M.
Both of my parents were (and still are) ignorant of games, so I don't believe they even knew what games were really bad. Growing up, friends of mine would play GTA (Vice City maybe? or San Andreas...) and occasionally their parents spoke up about it. Most things I liked growing up were cartoonish and not overtly violent, so my parents wouldn't have much to object about anyway. Though, even now if they see me playing a more mature title, they're a tad surprised.
Its funny seeing all of the restrictions placed on Pokemon but my parents couldn't care less. A lot of my family was supportive of the games, even my grandparents (very devout Catholics themselves) got those games as gifts for my cousins and myself.
Graphics come after gameplay. Every time. It takes more than being pretty to be a good game.
I never really experienced this because the only games I've ever wanted were games that I was allowed to play!
...I never wanted any games that my parents would've frowned upon. An now that I'm 17, I can play whatever games I want (the only ones I can't play are Ao games, but I have no desire to play any of those)!
...and by "play" I mean "own"; I've played plenty of M-rated games in my time, but I just recently bought my first M-rated game.
My parents never restricted me from games but then again when I was a kid games weren't as graphically violent as games are nowadays I guess you can say. By the time games like Mortal Kombat came out I was in High School so by that time there was little they could do.
As for my son it depends on the game really and the subject matter. If its a game like Assassin's Creed then I will let him play it since I can trust him not to go around assassinating people. But so far I haven't banned him from playing any games.
