To be fair, Hades II is still in early access on Steam. I think it'll get a big jump when the official release happens.
94 on metacritic so far, putting it third on the metacritic 2025 list, after Zelda S2 editions. Just above Expedition 33. Silksong is at rank 5 with a 92 rating.
However, Hades 2 also doesn't have many reviews so far. Presumably because a ton of people played it a year ago; there was even discussion of whether it was allowed to be a GotY contender in 2024. I'm not sure how that odd circumstance will affect this year.
I don't think Hades 2 beats Silksong, purely because the hype is so much crazier for Silksong.
checks Steamcharts for Silksong vs. Hades 1 out of curiosity
OMG its not even close, yeah its Silksong.
Hades 2 is currently a little lower than silksong on steamcharts but both are in the top 10 currently most played games. More people have played silksong on Steam but for whatever it's worth:
I can’t see anything beating Clair Obscur this year—it is a true masterpiece. With that said, I can see Hollow Knight Silksong fighting tooth and nail to be the GOTY. I wouldn’t be upset if that happened. All I know for sure is that 2025 has been a banger for video games, and there are still plenty more coming soon.
For me personally this year it is E33.... genuinely really enjoyed that game.
Silksong I'm still playing, and whilst I appreciate everything Team Cherry have put together - the game is just too stressful to the point where I'm not sure I'm actually having all that much fun! Some boss fights are incredible, First Sinner springs to mind as a great example, but the traversal and run-backs are becoming pretty tedious. I love that SS 'exists' and that Team Cherry were uncompromising in bringing their vision of the game to life, I just think it is (for me anyway) just a little too hard & gruelling to be truly enjoyable!
I played Hades 2 in EA last year, pretty solid IMO
Deltarune is my goty but I’d settle for best ongoing. Bananza’s my realistic pick but I think 33 which I’ve never played will win. Silk song is good and deserves a nomination but if it wins it’s purely because it’s indie
Well, GOTY 2025 will be Ghost of Yotei, and both Expedition 33 and Silksong will receive some awards for sure, best narrative for E33, best indie for Silksong. That's my call
Hades II has now crossed the 50 review threshold on MetaCritic. In the past decade, every The Game Awards Game of the Year winner has had at least a MetaCritic score of "89" on at least one platform, and at least 50 reviews on at least one platform. Here are the 9 games of 2025 so far that fit those criteria as possible Game of the Year winners:
Hades II
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Blue Prince
Split Fiction
Donkey Kong Bananza
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
Monster Hunter Wilds
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance
Borderlands 4 (by a quirk of the ratings, this technically qualifies for the time being)
Some other heavy hitters yet to be released (or get enough reviews):
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Pokemon Legends: Z-A Oct. 16
Ninja Gaiden 4 Oct. 21
The Outer Worlds 2 Oct. 29
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Dec. 4 (but The Game Awards nominees are revealed in mid-November so...)
@OctolingKing13 I feel like Silksong may have shot themselves in the foot by not giving out early review copies. The actual GotY winner is always a game with lots of reviews as well as a high average review score and although silksong has a high score ( top 5 for the year and tiny bit higher than Bananza) it simply doesn't have many professional reviews. Maybe that will change, but it has been 2 weeks.
Now after over 5 weeks since release, Silksong is still only sitting at 41 PC MetaCritic reviews.
Looking at the reviews, I'd think that it'd be all over bar the shouting except for the fact that Hades 2 is both an indie game and a roguelite, and I'm not sure how many of the judging panel would be ready to make that kind of statement with the winner.
Every review I've read for Hades 2 is basically "its still awesome but it sure is more Hades".
I'll just say considering Last of Us 2 absolutely won 2020 instead of Hades because of the overwhelming (and in hindsight almost certainly overblown) hype, I still feel Hades 2 would lose to Silksong (but at this point I'm assuming both will be nominated).
Absolum has now crossed the 50 review threshold on MetaCritic. Some other heavy hitters yet to be released (or get enough reviews):
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Dec. 4 (but The Game Awards nominees are revealed in mid-November so...)
Now nearly 2 months since release, Hollow Knight: Silksong has crept up to 46 PC MetaCritic reviews. If it gets 50, it would be 5th-highest ranked on the list by MetaCritic score.
@MontyCircus Silksong is close enough that I bet it will get a few more reviews and have over 50 if it gets nominated for GotY. Several of the less reviewed games have gotten more reviews post nomination in the past.
Borderlands 4 for GOTY would be like if the Oscars nominated an MCU movie this year. "No" but also "you're still here?" (I say this as someone who liked the MCU movie with 4 in the title this year)
