I could probably pick a dozen different RPGs that I love, but Persona 4 and Final Fantasy IX are probably my absolute favorites.
I was wondering if you'd show up. I've been meaning to finish Persona 3 so I can go on to Persona 4 since forever. What makes it so special for you?
I thought PhoenixCake said it fairly well, but I'll do my best.
In fiction, whether it's movies, TV, books or RPGs, a plot may be what hooks me in, but characters are usually what keep me going through to the end of the story and what make me return to it. So I'd say that my favorite part of Persona 4 is the way you're rewarded for investing your time into developing the social links between yourself and your various friends and party members. Not only do better personas become available to the protagonist in the process, but you boost your partners' abilities in battle. It helps that they're interesting people that you actually want to spend your time with, and that they all have relatable problems and neuroses helps you care about what happens to them even more. I enjoyed my journey with them. And your ability to choose whom you spend your free time with is a big plus for me as well. If someone rubs you the wrong way, you don't ever need to spend more time than you have to with them.
The storyline stays compelling and maintains a steady flow throughout, with enough levity to relieve you from the occasionally hard nature of both the mysterious murders and the characters' examinations of the darker sides of their own pscyhes. Many of the plot developments were surprising, but I never felt that they hadn't been earned or that they were out of place with what had happened earlier in the story. The developers did an impressive job of leaving little bread crumbs that foreshadowed the the last major events of the game. And that the stakes initially aren't all about saving the country/world/universe from an all-consuming, all-powerful evil, and had more in common with a Scooby-Doo mystery (in a good way), made for a very nice change of pace from other JRPGs. Same goes for the small-town setting.
The battle system is rock solid. It's easy enough to grasp from the get-go (it's much like P3's: turn-based, with an emphasis on putting the enemy on their heels and preying on, and protecting yourself from, elemental weaknesses), but still tough enough in practice that you have to stay on your toes as you play through the game and you can't afford yourself too many lapses in judgement, especially in boss fights. And, in an improvement from the previous game, you have the option to manually control your partners' actions.
How you like music will depend entirely on your musical taste, but I thought it was pretty darn good throughout. My first playthrough lasted ~70 hours, and not once did I get sick of the regular battle theme. I still listen to the soundtrack sometimes.
And, much like Majora's Mask and Pikmin, I personally enjoyed the time management aspect of it. I always felt like there was something I could work on and I liked trying to figure out how to best utilize my time, whether it was venturing into the TV World, developing social links, fusing new personas, taking on part-time jobs, upgrading my weapons or improving the MC's attributes. But that might just me.
Let's see.... favorite RPGs.... In no particular order, Skies or Arcadia, Final Fantasy 9, Golden Sun Dark Dawn, Digimon World (It barely counts as an RPG though), and Pokemon Red. I want to play Secret of Mana, but I've never gotten around to it. IS it any good?
FF6: Release year- 1994 Kefka's birthday - November 9th So.... my life is practically mirroring Kefka? Cool.

I thought he just meant he wanted you to be able to defend it as an RPG if it was called out, not that you had to argue why you thought it was an amazing game.
Lieutenant Commander of the Lesbian Love Brigade
There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
Golden sun series - stylish battle animations and a good amount of length in each game. Mario and luigi series - fun and unique battle style, great storylines and alot of strategy involved. Pokemon series - because its Pokemon

Yeah, that's all I meant. Just explain yourself if you get called out. I've learned a long time ago that asking you guys to write a lot in these kinda threads is pointless.
Final Fantasy IX - This still remains at the top of my list when it comes to RPGs, not sure if it's just the nostalgia but it's definitely my favorite of all the FF games~
Golden Sun - One of my first RPGs, still love it to this day.
Final Fantasy V - This is the perfect SNES FF. It has a great mix of amazing music and good story-telling, and also a cool job system thing. Which is fun.
Dark Souls - This game is so rewarding. And hard. And for some reason fun o.0
Final Fantasy XIII - (no I'm not just splitting up all the FFs on purpose what do you mean) Wasn't satisfied with any of the PS2 FFs, this one was a fresh experience. The battle system was so awesome, and I loved the music, and the grafix were so purty < 3
Secret of Mana - Fun with friends. Awesome music. Those two are enough to make it good in my book.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite - Do I need to explain this one? I hope not because if you can't tell I'm not that great at this stuff.
Ask me how many of these games I've beaten and I can tell you 0 of them. It's a curse I think, but a good excuse for me to not write much on them
