Yes it's this thread again. You can list whatever you want, however you want, so long as it's an RPG and you can back that up with a reasonable argument. (Unfortunately, taking the term "Role-playing game" literally is not a reasonable argument )

As for me:

Favorite Turn-based games:

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey - A fantastic an well written storyline, a well fleshed out world and some carefully crafted themes, combined with the classic SMT gameplay I already know and love (Loads of monsters to collect and fuse, and fun turn-based gameplay that has just enough strategy to it to keep you focused without overwhelming you), except better (Lots of little tweaks, especially with the exploration aspect that makes this more refined than other entries in the series), make this a definite winner in my book.

Favorite Action RPGs:

Kingdom Hearts - This one could just be nostalgia, since it was my first RPG, but to me it was a good as it gets. It was a perfect blend of compelling story telling, memorable characters, a carefully crafted aesthetic that blends two completely different mediums and genres perfectly, and of course a brilliant mix of different gameplay styles that's suited to fit the tastes many different kinds of gamers. I've yet to see another game do what this game did as well as it did. While I still had some gripes with, those do not compare with the rest of this otherwise brilliant game. I'm so glad I let my brother pester me into playing it!

Favorite Western RPG:

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - The most fun and accessible WRPG I've played. It has interesting characters and a massive, fully fleshed out world to explore. The story itself is nothing to sneeze at either. The gameplay really does it for me, with loads of skills and weapons to try out and grind, without being restricted to one set class. This is a perfect example of what I want from Western RPGs. If Fallout 4 follows this formula, hell if any game formula, I might have a new favorite genre on my hands.

Strategy RPG -

2nd Super Robot Wars Z - The only handheld SRW that feels like its console counterpart. It's gorgous, the music is great, the animations are well-done (especially the kill animations), and there's full voice-acting, which also sounds great. The gameplay is as good as ever, featuring characters from some of my favorite anime, who are true to form (Heero even blows himself up again!). It just feels like they put a lot of effort in this one and I love it.

Honorable mentions:

Dark Souls
The Dark Spire
Final Fantasy V
Chrono Trigger
Grandia
Fallout 3
Tales of Vesperia
Phantasy Star

Dang, I actually believed ya for a second. After looking it up I see it's round-based, which means it's an action/turn-based hybrid, not exactly an Action RPG. You may just want to label it as Western or whatever, so more people don't get confused.

I like how everyone blatantly ignored this.

Mother 3 - I only played it once and I never need to play it again. It's story is so brilliant in so many ways and makes every other RPG ever made look like a complete joke by comparison. It is mandatory to play this game for anyone who likes anything good in this world. Nothing I say is good enough to describe it btw and there's a million other things good about the game but the story alone...not even that, the story in the first and last chapters makes this one of the better RPGs ever made alone.

Paper Mario - It's everything good about Mario but in this silly RPG game and even the part where you don't have timed hits is good, when it has no right to be good. The soundtrack is awesome, it's one of the best looking N64 games and it really feels like the only Mario RPG where it was more about being a Mario game that's an RPG instead of an RPG with Mario elements added in. I'll admit some nostalgia bias is probably involved and I can see why people think SMRPG is better but everything in this game was great, and nothing was bad. Not a single moment in this game felt like I could have been doing something better, which even most of the best games have ('sup Triforce pieces). Also, you get to solve a murder mystery involving penguins. Best ever.

Golden Sun 1 and 2: Simple really. Everything good about 16 bit JRPGs without everything bad about 16 bit JRPGs (for the most part at least). Pretty much. Also pretty amazing graphics for a GBA launch title, Motoi Sakuraba as the composer and the simple yet awesome addition of the djinn system.

Chrono Trigger: IT'S CHRONO TRIGGER.

Pokemon Silver/Gold/the remakes: Yes. The remakes are clearly better but Silver/Gold for some nostalgia and because that's the only time the gameboy link cable wasn't a joke for me as EVERYONE had these games. And they took the original games, made it better and added more great stuff. The amount of stuff in the remake is incredible though. They easily could have put little effort into it but they really tried to make them last forever. It's really incredible and most of what they added I really liked. I have a file that has like 200 hours which outside of Smash Bros games has to be a record for me for one save file. I don't care about Black/White, nothing's gonna top this game in the series unless they make the best MMORPG ever with Pokemon.

I want to put Oblivion and Mass Effect too but they had too many problems and the sequels are apparently better anyway.

hmmm thats a tough one.... easiest RPG for me is Pokemon series, and I like that im not stuck in pokemon like I am in DQ or FF, but KH 358/2 was a surprise, I was told it would be hard and I probably wouldnt get fair in it on Proud Mode, but im almost done day 352, I would really love it if I could be a pro at DQ.

Dragon Age: Origins: For being everything Elder Scrolls Skyrim should have been.

Final Fantasy XIII: An easy game to sit down and play, Final Fantasy XIII decided to do away with the silly things that other developers use to create an illusion that JRPGs aren't corridor-linear. Towns? Well, the FFXIII save points checked off everything you would do in a town. NPC interaction? Utterly unnecessary for this kind of game. Instead, XIII focused on making a dynamic and interesting combat system, and the best music and art direction in the series to date.

Atelier series: I do like how the extended alchemy game means you can get by these games with surprisingly little effort in combat.

Demon's Souls: Note - not Dark Souls. Which was a good game, but eh, too easy and too light. Demon's Souls was the brutality I loved from From Software back when it was making King's Field games, and the combat system is unparalleled.

White Knight Chronicles 2: I love, love, love the art direction, and the music. This is as traditional as JRPGs come, and I loved it for that as well.

Persona 3 is my pick for the best turn-based RPG ever made, and yes I've played Final Fantasy VI. I love that too, one of my favorite games ever made on both fronts.
Chrono Trigger is Chrono Trigger. Thus, it is awesome. Few games have aged as well as it.
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is one of my personal favorites as well. I bought it on a whim when I was a kid and it quickly became my most played game on the Gamecube.
TWEWY is my favorite game ever made, besides Mario Galaxy. Love every aspect of that game.
Also, FFXIII needs more love. I found it to be the most enjoyable Final Fantasy game I've played since VI, which is saying a lot. Taking it for what it is seriously makes it a lot better than most other RPG's. I agree with everything YellowChocobo says on this.
Oh, I almost forgot Mass Effect 1 and 2. Love the gameplay and the universe.
EDIT: Crap, how did I forget Ys IV: Dawn of Ys on the Turbografx? That game is one of my favorites.

@BlackFira - I completely agree with you. Legend of Dragoon is my indefinite favorite RPG.

Other amazing must-have RPG's are Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Mother 3, Rogue Galaxy, SoulBlazer, Wild ARMs 2, and Secret of Mana

HARPOOOOON! lol anyway...

Of course number 1 for me is Brigandine. My favorite game actually. A SRPG where you can pick from 6 different rulers and battle for global domination. All have different although limited stories. Every time you play its like a whole different playthrough with lots of different units to obtain/use.

Chrono Trigger: Do I really need to make an argument for this one?

Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals: Amazing game on the SNES and even has a 99 floor optional dungeon crawler inside it. There are other spoily reasons why I like this game that I wont mention. The story is great, capsule monsters were a nice addition with the ability to evolve and grow. The Sinistrals always made awesome bad guys.

Final Fantasy IV: I'm not going to make a huge list of FF games, but this one is my favorite. Maybe I'm just blinded with nostalgia, but I love the cast of characters with Kain as my all-time favorite. Maybe its dated to some but I still love going back through it. Lots of characters for its time, creative boss battles and the four fricken fiends!

Wild Arms: I vote this for best opening intro song ever. Still sends chills down my spine. The music is absolutely amazing. The first one has hideous graphics and bad battle sound effects, but the story is incredible. The Arms system was also pretty unique. There are times that the party gets separated and you have to use each members special abilities to solve puzzles and the like. Seriously though the music is probably the best aspect of the game.

Baiten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and The Lost Ocean: One of the very few RPGs on the Gamecube and the game is very well done. Good story, although some of the worst voice acting I've ever heard lol. The best and most unique parts of this game though is the battle system. One of the best card implemented battle systems I've ever seen in a game. Each card has a number and an element. You can either pile on the elements or go for the same numbered cards in a row or go for a straight to rack up combos and increase damage. This is also a very long RPG. 40+ easy.

Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga: Gotta give credit to where its do. Action based combat is really nice in this, especially with the use of bros. techniques. Some of the most fun minigames I feel in an RPG. The humor is always top notch in these games too. Especially anything to do with Luigi lol.

7th Saga: Many may hate this game, but I love it. The story is flat out bad, but the concept behind it was good. The battles are also very frequent and many times get pretty hard. A random encounter can kill you if you're not careful. Its also not the easiest to run in this game. You will grind in this game quite a bit, but that never bothers me. lol after all that bad, what good is there? I love that you can pick from 7 characters in the beginning of the game. Each one has special attributes and abilities. You also can team up with 1 other of these characters at any time in the game or in fact fight them. I would go into more detail, but thats just going to spoil a lot of the game. Still only for those who don't mind some difficulty in an RPg, nor mind grinding.

Ack I have so many others that I would like to mention, but that will make this post monstrous. I may post some more at another time.

FUUUUUUUUUUU

Tales of Symphonia- One of my favorite gamecube games. Though it has a very by the books story at the time it amazed me. That and I loved the ATB system.

Final Fantasy X- The first RPG I ever actively played.

Costume Quest- Its a fun Halloween based romped with funny dialouge and a simplistic story. Takes simple Turn based mechnics with abilities based upon a costume system kind of like FFX-2. There's also a system of Trading cards that work as equips.

Mass Effect- Still My game of this Gen even though I played it about three years ago. Got this a month after my 360 and Loved every bit of it. Made me a believer in HD graphics.
