Topic: Everything points out to Massively disappointing E3

I'm not reading through the whole thread but a few quick points worth making.

1. Them delaying online I don't see as the huge negative some are making it out to be. For a start we're talking a three month delay but it's also three months more where we don't have to pay for it. Swings and roundabouts. The second thing about it is that you can still play games online in the mean time. And lastly they also announced that the "free games" will be available as long as you're subscribed rather than just for a month.

2. Them putting "bad news" out before E3 is a standard thing that all companies do. This period now? Nobody outside of the Nintendo fandom is talking about them that much. Its why last year they came out before E3 and said that they were only talking about Zelda. The gaming media got the whine out of their system before E3. That's how it works. We got a Pokemon Direct now so we're not whining on message boards about no Pokemon Switch during E3.

3. 30mins isn't unusually short. This is the distribution of video lengths for the first 40 or so videos that show up when you type "Direct" into Nintendo's official youtube channel.

~30mins is actually pretty typical for a Nintendo Direct. If you narrow it down to E3 directs? Then sure, 30mins is on the lower end of what they've done before. But how much that actually matters depends on what's in it and what's around it. Some of the best Nintendo Directs have only been ~35mins long. Nintendo's E3 2008 show is rightly regarded as one of their worst shows, it dragged on for over an hour.

Ubi has done quite a bit of their 2D platformers and they are pretty much AAA dev. But yes, one could also argue that very few AAA makers make sports games either.

There are developers who have dominated their genres and there are genres that are under fierce competition, such as FPS.

First Person adventure genre is very popular right now, no denying that. It would be great to get some of those games to Switch but that doesn't seem likely at this point besides the aforementioned Skyrim.

Has Arkane at some point declared they would be doing games for Switch??

The multiplayer shooter people play on other consoles. Just like I play my sports games on other consoles, that's the unfortunate truth.

Mario Baseball... That would be one of the games to save E3 for me. Or Mario Football. Soccer is way too complicated to let Mario dapple with

Nintendo would benefit from all the genres you have mentioned, but to be fair they are limited in their own number of studios and developers. There isn't going to be active racing community on Switch besides MK. There isn't going to be enough players to justify WW2 or BattleFront for Switch.

The open world Star Wars game from EA. Another one of my wishful thinkings, just like Witcher studios new Cyberpunk or Bethesdas Starfield...

But man can hope

Mario sports really needs to come back though.

Mario Odyssey! Ok, it's great, I'll buy, now let's go home.

Well i'm not optimistic too. I want to see some new exclusives (or multi) releases. Not same old

@skywake The reason everyone is less exited on the 30 minute front is that most companies go all out and announce their entire foreseeable future at E3, stretching out to several years from now. So Nintendo saying "ours is 30 minutes" is inherently disappointing on that front. I think you're right about brevity being important, but once you dip down under an hour, under 40 minutes it becomes very apparent 'Okay, how many drop-dead amazing trailers can you actually fit in that time?'

The kinds of announcements that do fit in that time is Color Splash and Mario + Rabbids, which is inherently disappointing on another front. Hopefully there are no speakers and Rabbids is all at Ubi so we hear about at least like 2 cool 2018 games, but that seems unlikely. It's nice that Nintendo doesn't cheat and announce PS5 games like Sony, but that also hurts them when they are 90% of the developers for a platform, especially when not everyone on that platform wants the same games. Even among 'Metroid fans' you have fans of the side-scrollers, and people like me who won't lift a finger for anything that isn't a Retro-made Prime game.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

Haru17

@Timppis Lol, the Starfield 'leak' sounds crazy fake.

Way more AAA sports games get made and released each year than 2D platformers — they just get ignored by the traditional gaming press unless they stray out of sim territory. And Mario Strikers was a sick 'soccer' game. You don't know what you're talking about with 'complicated,' that is a capital-P Pick up and Play series.

And quite obviously, not all of the games in a platform holder press conference have to be made by first-party studios. None of the shooters at Sony's are, and neither are any of the RPGs at Microsoft's.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

@Haru17
For perspective though, their best E3 since they swapped to the Direct format was probably 2014. It was ~45mins all up, here's how that time was split up:

14mins: Smash Bros
5mins: Amiibo
5mins: Yoshi's Woolly World
1min: Captain Toad
4mins: Zelda BotW
2mins: Pokemon OR/AS
2mins: Bayonetta 2
3mins: Hyrule Warriors
1min: Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
2mins: Xenoblade X
2mins: Super Mario Maker
6mins: Splatoon
1min: Star Fox Zero

You can pack a lot into a fairly small amount of time. Especially now that Nintendo doesn't waste time on introductions, walking out on stage and so on. Note that I'm not saying that ~30mins can't be bad. I'm just saying that you can't read into that too much. It could be 20mins of Super Mario Oddessy and a trailer bombardment at the end for stuff we already know about. It could also be 10 or so mostly unknown games with only a few minutes spent on each.

Starfield isn't actually leak. Bethesda has trademarked that name. What it is, that is purely speculation at this point.

Yes. Way more sports games are made, but not by many developers. EA pretty much dominates Sports Genre and that is simply a fact.

Mario Strikers is a fun game but it has nothing to do with soccer. I want my soccer in a real life fashion. That is not negotiable. Soccer is sacred.

Not everything has to be made by first party studios... But no one really believes that 3rd parties flock to Nintendo

Timppis

Haru17

@Timppis There was a leak saying that it was randomly generated in the hopes of wooing the 'Minecraft audience,' which is gibberish and why I know it's fake. The trademark could be their new IP, but I have a 99% degree of confidence that that is fake. EA doesn't make games on Nintendo systems, so that's why Nintendo needs to make a few of their own.

@skywake Believe me, I remember. They've said focus on 2017 and Mario, so that means there literally isn't time for all these unannounced games. However, maybe you're right and I'm letting the wave of 'negative' news color my judgement. Two new announcements could fit amid Mario, FE Warriors, XB2, and Rabbids; and their parameters allow for a Monster Hunter XX Switch release this year. I would be satisfied with that if the new announcements aren't downright abominations.

I'm expecting at least half the spotlight event to be Super Mario Odyssey, that game is the Smash/Super Mario Maker/BotW of 2017.

NaviAndMii

@Grumblevolcano I'm leaning the other way to be honest - I'm not expecting more than a few minutes of the Spotlight to focus on Odyssey, mainly because it'll be playable at the event - I could be wrong, but we'll have a ton of gameplay footage to pour over, plus the Treehouse...so I just think that they may use the Spotlight to focus on some of the other titles instead? Of course, I still expect Odyssey to be a major cornerstone of the main presentation, but I'm thinking that the Spotlight will have more of a fast-paced showreel feel to it, briefly touching on games of all different genres, perhaps with more of a focus on the games that won't be playable (?)

Haru has a point. I think that you can fit every upcoming Switch game in the 30-min Direct, but I also think you'll be left with ample time for announcements beyond the things we already know about. And I honestly don't expect that any of the other devs will contribute a great deal to the Switch library this year. I appreciate the focus on games coming out soon, but sometimes it's also reassuring to know there's more coming beyond the current year. Anyway, it's only 30 minutes, so I don't expect a lot of new announcements. That Rabbids thing will be there, maybe Pikmin 4, but that's about it.

The way I see it, Nintendo has been trying to get some stuff out of the way to make room for new stuff during E3. Spla2n and Arms have both been covered quite a bit, so there's no need to spend much, if any, time on them during the E3 stream. Similarly, they got the Pokémon stuff out of the way so those announcements wouldn't risk overshadowing anything else. They'll talk about Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda DLC, Rabbids, and Kirby Air Ride 2, which will leave plenty of time for some other surprises!

Okay so maybe KAR2 won't happen, but there's still a chance. A very small, yet wonderful, chance.

I like makin' games!
Future Pinball games!
Petit Computer games!!
and SmileBASIC games!
Waiting for Kirby Air Ride 2. One day, it will come. One day...

They will not talk about Kirby: Spotlight is only about Switch. And by the way i don't expect ARMS to make its appearance, instead i think Splatoon 2 will. They can easily make another single player trailer for it, giving more hints about bad Callie (#TeamMarie!).

What i expect (maybe is more appropriate saying want) is DQ11, Xenoblade 2, Skyrim date & a couple of surprises (with one that has to be Metroid, even a little teaser for a late 2018 release)

Well lets split up that 30mins with games already known. After E3 there's Fire Emblem, Fire Emblem Warriors, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for Switch. On 3DS there's Pokemon, Hey! Pikmin and Miitopia. Throw in the Rabbids RPG and it's an even 10, which gives them about 3mins on each. Which is a bit above average for a game trailer.

I think that we're probably not going to see much of anything from the 3DS because they've largely covered 3DS in recent Directs. If that's the case then it's pushing closer to 5mins per item which is a bit on the long side. So I'd guesstimate that there are about 3-4 unknowns.

  • Fire Emblem/Fire Emblem Warriors
  • Splatoon 2
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  • Mario/Rabbids RPG
  • ????
  • ????
  • ????
  • ????

That's what 30mins would look like

Have you guys seen this totally real E3 internal use document that just popped up? I mean, The "internal use only" header just confirms that it's totally real.

These things make me laugh. I wish there were more out there, cause I think it's fun just to look at how crazy some of this crap is.
