Topic: Do blue ray players work on regular TV's?

Do they have all the same connection cords as a normal DVD player? I might be getting one but I haven't got an HD TV just yet. There's no compatibility issues right?

Some Blu-Ray players come with regular component cables, but, honestly, there's really no point in getting a Blu-Ray player if you're not using an HDTV. You won't notice any difference because the TV isn't capable of displaying that high definition.

I do plan to eventually get an HD TV but for now I'll have to use what I've got.
So basically blue rays on an old TV just look like normal DVD's right?

I've kind of wondered about this myself. I considered getting a PS3 when I had more money for the blu-ray and the handful of exclusive games I'm interested in, but I heard that you couldn't play Blu-rays on it without the HDMI. Anyone know if there's any truth to that?

Yes the Blu Ray player I got last year came with cables to hook up to my old TV which wasnt High Def. Most of the time you have to by the HDMI cable separate if you want to connect it to a HDTV.

Of course it's going to be better picture/audio quality--that's the point--but on an old TV (depending on how old, I guess) you aren't going to notice much of a difference. If the TV is too old to display in any sort of higher-definition, there's no way it's going to give that kind of "crazy amazing mind blowing leap audio-wise."

Thanks! I'm not even sure where I heard that. Read it somewhere, but I have no clue where. When I have more money I might pick one up.

@Waveboy
I'm assuming if he doesn't have an HDTV, he doesn't have a $4,000,000 sound setup, either (Sennheiser, really!? Holy balls)
That aside, I'm not trying to sound like I know more than I actually do, because most of what you said is just technobabble to me and probably most everyone else here. Unless you're an audio/videophile (which, assumingly the OP is not, otherwise he would already own all of this stuff) the slight jump in picture quality is just not worth it until you get an HDTV. Of course, you could go out and buy thousands of dollars worth of stuff to circumvent this and make the picture quality a little better on an SDTV, but it's just not worth it unless you're obsessed with video/sound quality like Waveboy.

Just like when DVDs came out and started to replace VHS. I didn't notice much of a difference, and neither did a lot of other people who weren't videophiles. After spending a long time viewing DVDs, though, and going back to VHS, it's obviously inferior. The point being, if you're used to viewing standard definition movies on a standard definition TV, the switch to high definition movies on a standard definition tv isn't going to be that noticeable right away. It's just not worth spending the money to buy a Blu-Ray player if you're not going to have the right equipment to take advantage of it, in my opinion. Of course, everyone sees things differently (literally) and so some will disagree, and to some--like waveboy--that jump in quality is a HUGE deal, especially when you have 1000s of dollars of equipment to enhance the experience.

Thanks for all the help guys.
I think I'll use the TV I have for now and start looking into a better one soon.
Maybe It could be an early christmas present for myself.
It's about time I upgraded anyway.
I'm probably the only one left in the world with one of those old box Tv's.

I wish that were true. Actually, all 4 TVs in my house are box TVs. :/

Well I shopped around some and found a few good deals. Over at best Buy they've got some nice blue ray players for a little over 80 dollars. They did have one cheaper but It only connects to the newer TV's.
I guess as long as the player has those red, yellow and white sockets on the back it'll hook to most older TV's.
I also had no idea they could connect to the internet. Shows how much I know.

@ Waveboy
I'm pretty sure my TV only has those red, yellow and white connections on the back.
The guy at the store told be a blue ray player will connect to those. Is this wrong?
Will the picture quality be terrible or something? I know it's obviously not going to be HD until I get a better TV.
I just wanted to get the player so I'll have that out of the way. The TV will come later when I get more money.

It should work fine, since Blu-ray players also play DVDs which use those types of connections.

Link79

Well hopefully the blue ray movies wont look like complete crap on my regular TV.
It's only about five years old but definitely not HD. As long as it looks about the same as standard DVD it'll be fine
until I get the new TV. I'll probably have one before years end.

If it's only 5 years old, I wouldn't be surprised if it did have the component cables, but then, only fairly good TVs had those 5 years ago. Honestly, though, if you're going to use composite cables with a Blu-Ray player, it's not even worth it.

Oh, man, now I feel compelled to list my Blu-Ray collection. I generally don't buy Blu-Ray unless I really like the movie a lot, or if it has a lot of cool visual effects in it. Old movies look old because they're old, so I don't really bother getting them on Blu-ray just so they look a little better; it's still not going to look as clear as movies made today.
