I don't see the next generation of consoles to attract the casual market's attention like the Wii did. But why would anyone who doesn't have video games as their main hobby, bother? Thoughts?

That link says 4.5 million in the first year here in the states.

Nintendo announced this morning that its 3DS handheld will have sold 4.5 million units in the States when it celebrates its first birthday on March 27, 2011.

And how could the 3DS's first birthday be in 2011? It's first birthday was this year.

kkslider is right. Pachter is wrong.

Consoles (aside from Nintendo's) don't even try to be dedicated consoles any more. They're entertainment units that sit in the living room, look like a nice bit of furniture and do movies, music, games and Internet stuff.

As such by default they're for casual gamers.

What casual gamers won't buy any more is dedicated gaming handhelds. Because the iPhone and iPad exist, and they do more than the 3DS or Vita will ever hope to do.
