Yeah, outside of optional stuff that only some games had back in the day, most games have way more than they did in the old days. People tend to forget that games were only longer back in the day because they were harder and pulled crap to artificially lengthen the game...

AKA padding. Which a lot of games do these days too.

true, old games were harder and had some real bad backtracking and weird plot twists(not really "plot" twists just a reason to force you to wadte more time searching for an item in a place you beat before) and even so I kinda liked it all....

Many new games seems to suffer from excessive hand holding and difficulty level which should insult the intelligence of anyone older than 7. There are some exceptions though, like Xenoblade or Dark Souls.

I'd say there are a lot of good and even more bad games in every generation, but games have most certainly gotten better from the days of Commodore 64. However, when comparing generation Gamecube/ PS2/ Xbox to our current generation, i wouldn't say that the modern era is better in terms of how entertaining the games are.

That's not the point. At least in modern games the padding will more genuine content. When was the last time you played a rediculously hard game, only to have it make you play through the same game again to get the ending? Or backtrack through the entire game after beating the final boss, under a strict time limit, where failure meant having to fight the boss all over again? That's the kind of bullcrap I'm talking about.

Games are getting better because their technology is getting mastered.
So, I'm going to take a large guess that next year will be almost as crappy as the Wii U's first year.

Uhhh.... X, Bayoneta 2, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8, and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze = not "almost as crappy as the Wii U's first year."

Game mechanics seem to be getting more refined. But it is also easier for people to make games, resulting in some really awful ones...

Yes they are getting better but people mostly care about the graphics these days (Sony fans). Nintendo fans like Nintendo not just for graphics, but also for fun gameplay.

I like to play Nintendo games (for a living :P)
I support Wii U.
I love my brother.
I like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, and Donkey Kong.

In no reality is that ever true. I've seen just as many Nintendo fans complain about the graphics (especially framerate) as Sony fans, and on both sides those people tend to be a vocal minority. And I've seen just as many people on Sony's side talk about the gameplay as much as anything else. I'm not sure why people still belive such a fallacy after all these years, but it's not true.

I mean, on this forum alone I can't count how many times people have discussed the graphical power of various consoles. There will always be people trying to figure out which console will be more competitive, which one will have the better games, and graphical power tends to be used as a factor.

Handheld wise they are getting better.
Home console wise, they're getting more cinematic and dlc heavy.
