Just like the Stranglers song said.. no more heroes any-more, but I disagree I've got a few, with the peerless Shigeru Miyamoto being one, having bought and played practically everything he's ever produced the amount of sheer joy he's brought me over the years is simply unmatched.
The other being the king of wordplay John Cooper Clarke ever since I first heard him performing 'Kung Fu International' I've been enthralled by his work (always better if you can actually hear him performing his poems than read them) I've been to see him live a few times over the years and have always left buzzing with excitement.. good times! just bought his latest book too.
Here's a taster for those that aren't familiar...

Artists would be more along the lines of fandom or idolization.

I wouldn't qualify any artist as a hero.

That designation should be reserved for firemen, law enforcement, scientists, etc.

But since you mentioned poetry, I'll opt for Oscar Brown Jr.

@Magician

I get what you're saying but I would say that a hero for me is anyone that is highly praised for all their achievements/work and inspires as a result.

I would say Dr. Michio Kaku is my hero. While I am still slowly trudging along to my degree, he literally got me into the field of astrophysics. Super cool dude. One of my most profound regrets in life is that my old computer crashed that had my email correspondence with him on it. (the domain provider was small so the servers are long gone).

Other than that Angela Basset and Ming Na Wen. While I am biased because I have a crush on both of them, as a woman I admire their tenacity and kindness despite how hard it was for them to get to where they are. Also both managed to juggle fame and family and that takes a ton of extra work to do. (All the money in the world doesn’t take the place of presence. ) Ida B Wells and Harriet Tubman were walking badasses as well. Gonna add Michelle Obama to that list (both as a lawyer and as First Lady). I have a number of folks that help inform my personal philosophy but I don’t think that is the same as a heroine/hero.

Ooooh, big reader on cosmology here!

I've read Michio's "Parallel Worlds" book.

Thoughts on Brian Greene?

And love Ming Na, but Maggie Q is my action girl.

@UndockedActionFemme Cool, I read more textbooks or research papers than not though at this point. I read the elegant universe about 20 years ago (never seen the PBS series but that is because I had to severely curb tv watching as a teen to accommodate studying and never got into the habit of watching tv…I study just as much now anyway).

While Ming Na was stellar as Melinda May, I love her for her solemn gravitas and dry but sharp humor. Joy Luck Club is one of the few pieces of media I can say changed my life. Never heard of Maggie Q (again no tv and very little movies) but I googled her and she looks cool. If I was going by action I would say Anita Mui (I love badass women with a sense of humor) or Cynthia Rothrock.
