Uh, it's a 2D platformer, no? 3D collision/platforming is about the most horrible thing to code in the world.

ok just thought I'd say but there are many 2d playformers that used elements from 3d graphic like yoshi's island as I mentioned

I was thinking about the gliding thing could be tied to the character's speed like his climbing. If you're moving quickly when you trigger the glide then you get more horizontal distance from it - was thinking how real flying squirrels have to really push off from the branch to be able to glide long distances.
Maybe upwards air currents in certain levels could catch under his wings and push him high into the air if he glides over them too.

sounds cool it would provide a simple inivasion and learning curve. not many games use "gliding" per say and tend to just let you fly whereever and that makes the levles far to easy. btw a squirrle with wings seems like a kind of strange concept; wouldn't a bat be a mor logical idea???

before I go I'd just like to add I'd think it'd be really cool if we have a charecter that can transform into many different creatures like link does in majora's mask

Not that strange. I think the feathered wings work well on it too, makes it more unique rather than just being some random athropomorphisised mammal.

Edit @126: Mm, I wouldn't overcomplicate it. A sidekick with similar but additional powers could work though - Tails is effectively Sonic with flight, Yoshi is effectively Mario with a flutter jump and an appetite, Rambi lets DK plough though walls and Diddy lets him hover, etc. Provided the sidekick doesn't handle COMPLETELY differently to the main character, they can be a good addition to a game (and if they're similar enough, an option to play as the sidekick is often a nice incentive to keep playing)

In terms of story I think we should use a begining of the end scenario leaving the first levles end on a cliffhanger until you go there again on the last levle. this may not be so effective with a non-linear levle pattern though. as an added note we still need to talk about how we are going to lay out levle; (eg. linear, hub world, or map selection.)

I like the idea that, if we have worlds of levels, later in the game may mix things up and have you revisit an old world to do harder levels in that theme. One of my problems with DKCR (one of very few, it's an awesome game) was that it was too formulaic. The levels themselves had some really incredible unique features, but the overall progression through the game never once mixed up the pattern of doing a set of levels then a boss. Which seemed especially odd coming from a company who's previous games were Metroid.

I agree there were not any twists and turns, no returning to old levles and no gaining any new abilities. all inconic factors that are present in metroid. something tells me it was a style choice seeing as they folowed the original donkey kong country as a blue print. but as aposed to our game I think it is more than important that we have unlockible abilities that mix up the play and make the player journey back to earlier levles.

C'mon guys there hasn't been a single post on the project all day. I'm not saying to force ideas but we should atleast talk to keep the flow going.

by the way so not to be completly critical I think we should end the game with a song (In the same way portal or you have to burn the rope did.

I would love to, except...
1) I'm really busy
2) I'm probably too young.

But if I could, I would really like to create a story (I have no idea if you have one or not). If I did, it would take me a while to think of one... But I really like story (if you want to you can check out my series on flipnote hatena). And I like coming up with ideas. I would love to help you guys out on this.

And can I know what we've established so far cuz I'm WAAAY to lazy to read the whole thread.

I'd really like to help. I'll do anything (even program, I'll learn how to), just give me a job.

Sure, it's a 2D platfromer programed in delphi. I'm pretty sure we're going for an 8-bit look given the look of some of the showcased sprites. Our protagonist is most likely going to be a squirrel wth wings however we still have alot to cover on that front as well as everything eles inbertween. Oh and the project has been dubbed "project coffeh" but we usually just refer to it as: our project.

Take in mind this project isn't something that will be finished in a day as Kraiser mentioned. It's going to take alot of time to evolve and develop over time so just keep that in mind. In terms of story it is one of the things we really havent tapped into to much but if you have any ideas big or small, story related or whatever then don't be shy to express them. Finally in terms of age I really don't think thats a big issue; as long as your supportive for the project age is irealavant (I'm only 15 after all.)

Besides this is a hobby not a job or chore; so just have fun, relax, and good luck.

Well, try to address what your best at. In terms of programmeing we already have Yai doing that as your probaly already aware of. However if your undesided about what you want to do then simply express opininion. Tell us what is good, whats bad and give ways to improve.

My best skill is probably character design. I'm pretty good at drawing and developing characters. I also am planning on becoming a character developer for games once I become an adult, so this would be good practice.

After that, story is my second best skill. If you guys are trying to create a really wacky, cartoony game, then I'd be pretty good for that job.

I'm also pretty good at Photoshop, if you need like a title card or something. I can also create backgrounds or set pieces, but I don't trust myself enough to create any big characters or something like that.

Oh, and you might not count this as a skill, persay. But I've played a lot of browser games I think I really know what gamers like and don't like about them. So maybe you would consider that being a consultant or tester, but I'd just thought I'd better mention it

@briunj04: ok I suggest you keep an I on the thread our development process is to develop ideas together so try and come up with ideas and see what people think. the threads been a little slow just recently but this can be expected seeing as we're all in different time zones. (it's 01:41 GMT right now )

A squirrel... Its gonna be an interesting story... Well I'll start brainstorming right away.

And we're looking at something similar to Cave Story? Cool. I was a spriter on hatena, so I'm sure I could TRY to help with graphics...

Um, does anyone have a MS Word document that explains the game and its story? I'm kinda lazy and don't want to read 140 posts to get a grip on the game

Edit: JK, just saw the explanation in its entirety
